Wars are not good for any country but Milosevic had this coming. And the fact that Serbian General says that they were expecting a ground invasion but he stressed that they could inflict losses in NATO’s army it’s beyond me. Taking a risk to inflict losses and not taking into account that he would be doing so in expense of his peoples lives it tells me that he’s a very selfish idiot. He was drinking some fine wine somewhere knowing he wasn’t going to die in battle field and playing politics with peoples lives.

There were liberals at that time in Serbia that joined the army, even those that criticized Milosevic regime. NATO was not only demanding ocupation of entire Serbia but even when peace agrement was to be signed they demanded Serbian military to leave all their equipment behind and leave on foot, during these negotiations they used B52 bombers against serbian troops wounding and killing dozens. Even today every year NATO soldiers are on a patrol in south Serbia they have a right of movement 5KM inside Serbia from the Kosovo border, and they also don't alow a civilian radar on high mountain in that border area, even though it would be important for civilian air trafic. That border area where NATO can be present could have been much larger. Would you be ok with your entire country being legally occupied?

@Irish Fella maybe, but they would have suffered heavy losses, several years ago CIA declassified a report about ground invasion of Yugoslavia, they said they would need 200K troops for the invasion and occupation and they projected casualties between 20K and up to 50K on NATO side, they listed number of reasons I remember they wrote about how Yugoslavia is mostly forests and mountains terrain that favors the defenders and makes air power less effective, also that Yugoslav army wasn't much damaged from the bombing and at that point was quite large and that Yugoslav hid their best equipment in preparations for the invasion, also they heavily mined every part of their borders and would have used scorched earth tactics which would have made NATO advance slow down, at the end they weren't sure what would have been Russian and Chinese reaction to the invasion and if they would intervene, they were certain that most western European governments involved in the bombing would fall, therefore ground invasion was too much of a risk for NATO. But they certainly made a nice bluff acting like they would invade which made Russians believe them so they would put pressure on Milosevic to back off.

No We didnt, they didnt show part when US State Department decided to support KLA and form a US satelite state in Europe so they can control both east and west of Europe, all they ever offered to Milosevic was occupation like one that came after Kumanovo agreement, they said we wanted peace all the time, yes, albanian refugees came back and destroyed thousands of serbian homes and 150 churches, thats not how you protect both sides as Clinton lied in this movie, we had no option, even there was no Milosevic they would make another president evil in their propaganda, only person worth mentioning is General Ivashov who wanted fair agreement, both our time will come again and we will have kosovo under our control again.

To be honest, Bismark was right way, way, way back when he predicted a European war would start in the damn Balkans back before the Great War (1st world war). I think that's why ever since no one wants to get in the middle of shit in that area. After Bosnia however....I think it was not possible to leave them to their own devices again.

I don't know if you are aware but before Austria annexed Bosnia in 1908, Serbia was preparing for an attack on Ottoman empire and to take over that area since third of serbs lived in Bosnia, and Bosnia is where rebelion of serbs in Ottoman empire started. Bulgaria also wanted to take over their Ottoman area where bulgarians live, and Greece to take over Macedonia. When Austria annexed Bosnia in 1908 it was seen in Serbia at the time as a declaration of war, and war was barely avoided with some serbian generals being dismissed and public being divided. Before annexation Austria was seen as an ally of Serbia by alot of people

At 01:27:00 and the Russians attempt to put a foot into Kosovo; the refusal by Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria for Russian aircraft to overfly their land seems a slightly dubious reason for the failure of the Russians not forming their own area. Couldn't these big cargo aircraft seek a more circuitious route? Maybe via the Black Sea and over Greece? Maybe Black Sea, over the Agean and up the Adriatic and come in that way? The only other route would be north and coming in from Czechoslovakia, Austria or those north of Yugoslavia ... but I suppose similar refusals would be heard from those? Itjust seemed a bit daft that those big Antonov cargo aircraft, that could carry a tanker full of fuel, could not find a route even if it was longer.

Its same as today, 21 year later, the border between NATO and Russia is in Black Sea, Crimea, 600km away from Serbia, its not far but you need to cross whole Romania which is impossible by NATO, even Romanian people love Serbia and they were against bombing in every possible way, if Russia makes a hole by putting Romania on their side, Serbia would be much safer and 1999 would have never happened.

10:17 - this is such horseshit. Precision guided munitions used for ground attack do not “home in” on metal (the proliferation of everyday objects that contain vast quantities of metal would make something like this totally impractical- how would it distinguish between that armoured vehicle you want to destroy and a nearby bus? Or even just a tin roof?) and while there are some varieties of air-surface weapons that use thermal guidance, they would certainly not be fooled by a wooden box painted in “chemicals”. I highly doubt thermally guided bombs would have even been utilised much in these strikes anyway, given the array of other, far more suitable guidance methods available (Laser, satellite/inertial guidance, Video optical, radiation). Finally the cheapest (and most frequently used) type of smart bomb is the JDAM which typically cost somewhere between $18,000 - $40,000 each, not “millions of dollars”

@1GTX1
@1GTX1 10 ай бұрын
After the first, there was another cluster bomb drop in this city in the civilian area weeks latter, but there were no people on the street. During this month bridges were targeted during day, sometimes during a holiday or rush hour, like in the case of ''Varvarin bridge'' when there were hundreds of people near the bridge. The girl that was killed on the bridge was learning German with her friend that year. Germany was sued by families for providing logistical/radar air support and approving the attack on bridge, but the response was that Germany only gave green light to NATO, not the time of the attack on the bridge.

Yugoslavia is confusing because the first Yugoslavia should have really been a country called Serbia after WW1 which would have included all of Slovenia Croatia Bosnia Macedonia and the most of Kosovo and a second country called Montenegro which would include a part of Kosovo, the second Yugoslavia after WW2 of Tito was more confusing because republics with national identities were created and the capital was still Belgrade, in theory Belgrade was running the country that was internationally recognised, Slobodan Milosevic allowed the areas that didn't have too many Serbs to leave which explains why he didn't attack even Macedonia which really should have been a trophy from World War 1, he allowed much smaller Croatia and Slovenia and a Muslim region around Sarajevo to leave, the Croats thanked him because then they could carve out croat Herzegovinia and get their first independent yet small Croatia which they would later expand in 1995 by kicking out the Serb enclave, if Slobodan Milosevic declared immediate martial law and placed all independence party leaders in jail there would be no civil war and Yugoslavia would have remained
