We have never stayed at a KOA being RV Newbies, but the Mt. Rushmore KOA did not disappoint. It was like summer camp for the boys while we stayed on site to enjoy the happy hour and beautiful views.
The boys enjoyed Rock Climbing, Water Slide, Trampoline, Bike Rentals, Ice Cream, Pancake Breakfast… but most of all being free to run around the KOA property like they owned the place.

I am sooo happy to see this one in particular! We did a 6 month vacation when our kids were about the same age....and still talk about it now that our youngest is 30. These are the times you will remember!! Looking forward to watching your next adventures!

We took our grandsons out west a few years ago and saw Mt. Rushmore. Incredible trip and we had so much fun. I’ve wanted to see it since I was a kid and now I can check that one off.

Yeah, our vet said to keep track of smily face days and frowny face days... so we knew when things are getting too hard. Maddie is 16 and she's doing okay. She made it to Season 2 and we'll see how she does.

How much time should we plan for Rushmore? We are embarking on our second "road trip" in just a few days and Mt. Rushmore is on the itinerary. We are doing the "out west" trip. Our first trip was a 10 day Michigan / UP trip. This one will be about 2 weeks so there will be a lot of driving as we originate from Indianapolis. We have enjoyed every one of your episodes and are also enjoying going back and using them as reference material for this trip. We thought we had a SUV / towable all set to go for this trip, but alas, it was not to be. We will be tent camping. That is ok. We are using what we have to do what we can! Thanks for all of the years of videos. We definitely look forward to capping off our busy Sundays with KYD!

‘Waiting for water to boil at high altitude.’ That brought to mind moving from coastal Florida to Colorado, specifically Woodland Park in Ute Pass west of Colorado Springs. Altitude was c. 8,500 feet. To say an adjustment was required is a massive understatement! Going to the top of Pikes Peak (14,110 feet) just outside of the Springs, was an order of magnitude worse. If I ever go back I WILL take O2 along...

To be honest, I highly doubt anyone would be upset about you guys hanging out at the High School. Buffalo is very laid back and welcoming. We're in North Dakota now because of my job but we'll eventually go back to Wyoming.

Great stuff. We're hitting the road full time early next year when I retire. We'll be road schooling our two youngest and can't wait. Great to hear! Similar senses of humor, so your crazy too? :) If you visit Rushmore, the KOA is exceptional. As our video indicated - staying there really made that visit more enjoyable. Like the videos, love the black hills area, have been there twice an going to go again. Mattie looks like she is hurting. Saw you rig setup when you were parked at the school, you need a serious hitch adjustment, truck and trailer need to be level when towing. You can make that adjustment with your equalizer hitch.
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. It doesn't normally sag the truck like that. I have a weight distribution hitch, but just ordered helper springs that arrive today. Will be installing this week to help level the rig. There will be a video of course. We also have Maddie on a joint and pain meds now. Doing better. Thanks for watching and the comment.

As an "Oh, By the Way"...if you look close the picture you have of Mt Rushmore, to the left of Washington you will see a blank spot. That is where Jefferson was originally...BUT...there was an issue with TJ's forehead when John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum returned from a trip to Europe. He insisted the miners used to much dynamite. When it was decided there was not enough stone to carve deeper, the blew it away and moved Jefferson to were it is now, which pushed the others to their current position. Where Lincoln is currently, there was supposed to be a big stone tablet carved which I believe was going to display the Declaration of Independence.

Love the video but I am concerned about Mattie. She may be in pain or having trouble with the altitude. If she needs help in and out of the car and rv she has significant arthritis which can be extremely painful. Dogs dont show their pain like humans. when they withdraw ...sleep a lot and refuse to go in and out of steps its because they are in pain. I went through this with my first german shepherd service dog who lived to be 14.5 yrs old. One of the first things you will noticee is trouble with stairs, car, and getting in bed. There is a product we used that was absolutely awesome. Its called GylcoFlex-3. We gave her 2 a day and it really helped to relieve the pain. Also youll want to be extra careful with how you get her out of the car as you could be causing her a lot more pain. The supplement is so worth the $30 a bag....considering all the love and companionship our pets have given us over their lives. I am sure you are probably giving her something already but this really helps. We also gave her a prescription antiinflammatory like rimidayl. You can see she wants to come down but it hurts too much. Also giving her daily massage to leg joints can be significantly helpful too. Good luck. Lots of people assume the behavior she is showing is just old age ...but it really is pain. A dog will be in horrible pain before they cry out or refuse to eat so we dont realize. I didnt use to either until we experianced it with my sweet Sheba.
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I should have made it more clear that Maddie likes to play, "I'm not getting out of the car". Or door. Or being told what to do... When we have time, we like to see how long she'll play and then she jumps out and runs around. That being said, she does have arthritis and we give her meds.

You guys are awesome. We've been on the fence about getting an RV for 3 years and these videos make us want to commit. Our golden is 10. We have a golden puppy, she's one. We give the old lady her meds and pamper her with memory foam. When the tennis ball comes out then she transforms into a cheetah but if we ask her to jump off the bed or get in the truck she gives us the same look I see from Maddie that says 'I got arthritis... Ain't nobody got time for that.' That's a happy dog. Have you guys considered letting her ride in the trailer. I haven't done much research. What are the pros and cons?
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 8 жыл бұрын
Your comment made us all laugh out loud. Thx for the comment. We will be doing a Q&A soon that might help answer more questions. The trailer under tow is a rolling earthquake. We think it would send Maddie into cardiac arrest! Plus, she knows the drill. When I start packing up, she's standing by the back door of the truck.

Our family loves your videos! We are getting ready to live the dream and roll out full-time in June :). Your Maddy was so sweet. Quick question about dogs in trucks. We will also have three kids in the back seat and we have a 40 lb goldendoodle. Did Maddy just sit on the floor in between the kid’s legs? How did that work? We are trying to decide if we need a bench in the front but I’m not sure I want a kid or a dog next to me 🤣.

Yes, believe me. I pick up Maddie 14 times a day... in/out of the RV. This video is misleading. She wasn't getting out due to pain. This is a game she's playing since a puppy and when we have time... it's fun to see how long she'll stay in the car.

I know this is an old video. I first stayed there in 2009 for my first RV trip when my kids were about the same age as your kids in the video. I just made reservations for Palmer Gulch yesterday for a return trip. My kids are grown and working so it will just be my wife and I this time, assuming the virus is under control. I still prefer RV travel over hotels even without the kids.

How long is your TT? Also, interesting to see the Golden in the back seat area of the truck. We have a ~85 pound GoldenDoodle and I have wondered how it would work with him in the backseat (plus our 2 teens). Is there really enough room?
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 7 жыл бұрын
The TT is 28' - 31' overall. Well, the Golden works great... but she is so old now, she doesn't get up on the seats and sleeps mostly the entire ride. So it's working out well, but it's not a fair comparison :)

Quick question what canon camera are you using and what is your go to lens? I have the t3i and I love my Tamron 18-270 super zoom. If you buy any lens you need to get this one. Keep on making videos guys and stay safe on the roads.
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 7 жыл бұрын
I have a T5i and I ended up using the standard 18-55 80% of the time. I also have a 50 and a 250. I'll check out the Tamron, but I'm eventually going to move to the Panasonic GH5, so I'm not buying anymore Canon stuff :)
@AceCombat6842
@AceCombat6842 7 жыл бұрын
Keep Your Daydream. I have a friend who owns the gh5 and he loves it! I have used it a few times and i have to say it is much faster than the canon. Nothing worse than trying to take a photo and you get that busy mrssage in the viewfinder lol. He said his only issue is hes finding it hard to get the lenses he wants. Seems a lot of the accesories are always on backorder. So if you find a shop that has what you want get it. My family and I are doing the Great Canadian Trip next year. We just picked up a 21 foot cougar by keystone. Its a 99 but it has everything and everything works. 2000$ it was a steal. I hoping to do a vlog so our family can follow our adventure. Ive learned so much from your videos thank you.

Sweet. Have fun. Regarding your Cannon. How fast is your SD chip? Mine writes to disk at 95mbs and is fine. Not a huge difference between the the T3 and T5 with that function. I was thinking about moving to an even fast chip now they are cheaper.

Keep Your Daydream I think its one of the fastest cards you can buy. I do save the pictures to it in jpg and raw format so that may be the reason i get the busy message once in awhile. Usually after taking a burst of pics

How was the drive from Yellowstone to Mt Rushmore! Step incline or just hilling ? How did the ford truck do pulling you trailer ?
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 8 жыл бұрын
It was incredibly steep. I should have included more video of the highway out of the East entrance of Yellowstone. I want to say Big Horn, but can't remember. The truck did awesome. To maintain 60 mph, it required 2nd gear and 4,200 rpm (which I don't like). So I kept it in 3rd and rolled up 50. Fast enough. One of the prettiest highways we've ever driven.

That dog was probably having serious joint pain 😑 not much you can do at 16, but... Idk, as a dog guy who trains a lot and is rather cold towards them, I had a hard time watching Maddie get out of the truck. Love the video, though!

Great video! What microphone are using on your camera? We are in the market for a shotgun and we've looked at a few.
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The only mic to get for a DSLR is the RODE Mic. They make several different options and I paid over $200. But I just heard from a documentary film maker that he bought the black/pink one for $160 and it's better. I think it's bigger. I like that mine is someone small. I also have the dead cat to block wind. Essential for outdoors.

We really need to do a Q&A on this. Because we no longer have a house "back home" we are not paying for two of everything. All in all... RV Life is about 1/3 less than traditional living. Without kids or doing more boondocking... it could be half or more.
