In March I climbed Shasta up Casaval Ridge and skied down Avalanche Gulch. I opted to do this climb in a 1 day push, which proved to seriously kick my butt! ~7500 ft of climbing over 12 miles total. While this mountain is not too technically difficult, it took every thing I had on en endurance level.

Beautifully filmed! I appreciate all the extra effort that went into self-filming on such a long and demanding route.

Thanks! and yes, The mountain kicked my butt, but double backing to get some of those shots certainly didn't help haha. Worth it though!

And skiied cement on the way down. That was a beast. Looked like Mammoth's cement snow that thaws and re freezes. Fields of powder would be the dream....such a beautiful mountain.

Took my butt 20 and 1/2 hours via Clear Creek trail. The scree was a pain to go up and even though I didn't have the fun luxury of skiing, the loose ground made it easy on the the joints going down. Cool vid.

"It's still so far away!" The top of Misery Hill. One of the most disheartening moments of any climb of Mt. Shasta.

Great job and great video. I hoped to do Casaval for the first time this spring (I’ve summitted on 3 other routes) but it will have to wait until 2021.

I attempted a climb up it last june when i was 13 but i didnt make it to the top because i dont have very good endurance, and it was over 2 days. im impressed that you did it in one day as well

Great video man- Do you carry your ski boots separately in your pack and are you using an AT setup?
@MountainMontage
@MountainMontage 3 жыл бұрын
AT set up, I skinned up the first bit in the dark, Probably could have skinned more but it was just easier to not switch back and forth once I put my skis on my back

Same, man! leaving next week. I have beta from a friend who did it last weekend, and said snow was good down to a little below helen lake, so I'd assume this weekend you'll still get to ski down to helen.

well not as technical as Devil's Kitchen Headwall V1... LOL Did you like the route? Did you bring enough calories?
@MountainMontage
@MountainMontage 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, technically speaking it was a walk in the park comparatively, though snow conditions were pretty nice and that can make a big difference. there was some 50 degree spots. Though Shasta required every once I had on an endurance level! I had enough calories (its harder to eat I high elevation) but not enough water. I forgot one of my liters of Gatorade I mean to bring, so I was running out 2/3 of the way up. supplemented by melting some snow but it certainly added a bit of extra time. I would recommend 5 liters or just bring a stove and plan to stop. Overall its a cool mountain, and it was a fun route. I will go back someday for sure.
