I recently purchased a Sieg SC4 lathe but I couldn't find a suitable Carriage Stop. So, in this video, I had a go at making one.
I'm very much a novice when it comes to home engineering so if you can offer me any help or advice, please leave a comment. Also, please leave a comment if you find the video of interest too.

It's those little projects that make for easier working, much better than lashing something together.

I'd drill a hole through the side and use a brass tipped grub screw to secure the setting of the bolt. Looks good though!

Nice little project! A couple things you might consider. Turn the screw around so the carriage hits the head rather than the threads so they don’t get damaged. Also add a jam nut so once the screw is where you want it vibration or bumps won’t change it. Thanks for doing these videos!

Hi Rick. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will try to get hold of a longer screw and add a jam nut, or maybe a spring. Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew yet another idea for my mini lathe . i wonder when i will be able to start making proper things as opposed to upgrades lol

Hi Andrew, I did the same type of carriage stop, rather than a threaded bolt I used a piece of silver steel as a sliding stop, locking it by a thumb screw. Also used a knurled knob for locking the stop to the ways of the machine. No more fiddling with an Allen key socket that's full of chips. As for cutting the vee on the mill, make you self some angle blocks, Joe pie and mrpragmaticlee shows how easy they are to make. Save a lot of guess work or trying to crank the head of mill to get the angle. As you'll already know the sc4 doesn't have clutch for the saddle travel when using power feed, just beware of crashing into stop. Adam

Hi Adam - many thanks for the info. I will certainly check out the info on the angle blocks. Cheers Andrew

I have an SC-4 and I highly recommend that you make a second one. I’ve found that the carriage lock isn’t that great. I have had problems with parting off larger steel bar and on interrupted cuts. I ended up making a second stop. When I part off I put one one each side of the carriage to hold it in place. It works great.

Hi Anthony. Thanks for the suggestion. I've not tried parting off on the SC4 yet. The carriage lock is certainly poorly documented and doesn't seem to look as robust as the one I made for the SC3. Thanks again. Cheers Andrew

Very cool. I also have a SC4 lathe and I made an almost identical carriage stop about 2 years ago. I also added a cam lock carriage lock to the carriafe in between the ways and made tapered brass gibs. I just subscribed to your channel too!

Hi Brandon. Thanks for the info and subscribing. A cam lock carriage lock is certainly of interest. I made a carriage lock for the SC3 and I must get round to making something similar for the SC4. If you have any diagrams/pics I would really appreciate it if you could email them to me at learningturning@btinternet. com. That would really help me. All the best. Andrew

Hello Andrew, another great video. Just one comment. A "pivot" point on the lower part (to stop the gap closing up) would further enhance the design.

Hi mate. You could have also put the top block in the milling vice at 45 degrees, rather than flat, and milled the Vee out in one go, no filing.

Have you traded in the sc3 or are you now running both lathes?
@learningturningmetal
@learningturningmetal 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron - I'm running both. After making the various mods the SC3 is a cracking little lathe. Only workshop space will determine whether I have to sell it in the long run. Cheers Andrew

Well, you can make components for one lathe on the other lathe. Never a disadvantage to have two.
