Making an Upshur Opposed Twin IC Engine.
In this video, part 5 of the series, I make the conrods.
I hope some of you will follow along with my new engine build. Maybe some of you will have a go at making one too.
The drawings and build instructions are detailed in Model Engine Builder Magazine Issues 7 and 8. These can still be purchased on-line for a small fee:

Very complicated parts Andrew, but confidently handled. I enjoyed seeing all your work holding set-ups. The end result was worth the effort. Looking forward to the next part. ATB Nobby

Good to see progress with this project. You did well to get all those cuts in the right places. I am sure I would have shaved off the wrong side at some point! I can see why you were tempted to fit bronze big end bearings. Will the aluminium stand up to the wear from the ctanckshaft? Time will tell I suppose. A very enjoyable visit to your workshop as always.

Excellent Job Andrew, i went down the route of using the lathe to turn the boss, i think your approach is a better option, had the same problem with a stripped thread 😅. Glad the weather has picked up and you have got a bit more time on your hands. Keep them coming.

Thanks Jim. Yeah those 2-56 threads are quite fine. I am contemplating whether to put some nuts on the other end at final build stage. Thread lock for definite! Just looking at the pistons, I might try to go with viton rings if I can get the groove deep enough. Cheers Andrew

@@learningturningmetal exactly what i am intending to do is use nuts it will add much needed strength where it is needed.

Hello Andrew, another great video. You are correct they were fiddly things to machine , but they came out great and certainly looked the part when fitted. My first engine was a Upshur single, which runs great.

Good to see a new video Andrew. I was wondering if winter was still lingering in Yorkshire keeping you out of the shop or if spring had sprung and you were answering the siren call of the motorcycle. Dick B. USA

Hi Andrew, nice to see you back. One question, why did you use the coaxial indicator to centre the rotary table instead of the quick and easy MT taper held in a collet (that I use) I’m sure I’ve seen you use in the past?
@learningturningmetal
@learningturningmetal 6 ай бұрын
Hi Nige Just habit I guess. I use the coaxial indicator regularly and I get good results. It doesn't take much time to set it up either. Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew . I noticed the humidity in your workshop was 81%. Im getting a bit obsessed about the humidity in mine . Ive got a small dehumidifier in there and its still around 73% and im still getting some flash rust if i dont keep sheets over the machines. It seems high when i compare it to around 50% in my house (at the time of writing). Just wondered if you get any issues?
@learningturningmetal

Hi Simon Thanks for your concern. The display I made shows the inside temperature. I also programmed the cpu to intercept a wireless signal from an outside monitor. I decoded this to display the outside temperature and humidity. So what you saw was the outside humidity. Thanks again though for raising it as a potential issue. Cheers Andrew
