Definitely, with marketing designed to convince as many people as possible that they NEED their stuff to go out for a bike ride. Let's be realistic, most people aren't racing or pushing the limits and are just out for a pootle around a trail centre once a week/month and really don't need cutting edge anything apart from those sad individuals who need it for 'bragging rights' whatever that means.

Higher prices, saddly. Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports, at least in the US. There isn't a massive infrastructure for manufacturing high end bikes, and most of them are over seas. High demand + Low Supply + bad supply chains = increased prices.

I think there is place for both. Some people just wanna do sports - you don't need an E bike for that (which brings additional complexity and costs for repairs). Some people just wanna do a nice joy ride with some exercise - here E bikes are perfect. In other bike categories E bikes are highly practical, and can even partially replace cars for transportation.
