Motor Torpedo Boat, launched in 1937, shows it still has its pace in 2016, seeing off two Royal Navy patrol boats in a show of speed in the North Sea.

That MTB just looks like a set of engines, wrapped in a skin-tight suit of waterproofness barely large enough to strap 2 torpedo tubes to. Awesome :D

Such a great boat I remember seeing it in the early 90s as a young boy moored at Brundall boats.

Forgive me for saying this it would be interesting to see how a German E-boat and RAF High Speed launch performed against the MTB and the two younger boats. The Royal Navy upon receipt of the two German E-boats at the end of WWII who put them through various trials and inspections admitted they were better than the MTBs.

The Schnell Boats were better sea boats, faster, and longer range. They also had a safer fuel, diesel, then their petrol powered opposition. The RN answered with the Fairmile D boats, which were great boats, but only good for 30 knots and still with petrol engines. Ideally I'd have the S boat with three Napier Deltics which were tested in S212 after the war. The Deltic is more powerful, half the size, and one fifth the weight of the original Daimler Benz MB 501. Oh and they sound magnificent. The D boats and S boats were similarly armed.

A great pity that Brave Borderer and Brave Swordsman are no longer around, way over 50 knots with three Proteus gas turbines.

It's been many years since I had a few too many horse's necks on Brave Borderer. RN recipe was brandy and dry ginger. Max speed was classified, but they didn't really know what it was because the transponders were ripped off the hull (they said) when they really got serious. No GPS in those days. Most economical speed was, I think, 55 knots. The crew reckoned that the top speed was "very fast". The most impressive thing for me was that they could do 45 kts in a force 8. One year in the mid 1960s Brave Borderer was escort/safety boat for the Cowes to Torquay power boat race. Brave Borderer was faster than the fastest extreme power boat.

@@roadie3124 One of the top competitors was Tramontana ? full of E type engines . It was awesome to see Brave Borderer simply drive past them almost arrogantly. Why now does the mighty RN have trouble keeping up with a WW2 MTB, running on ferry engines.

roadie3124: I think you might have had too many horses necks back then. As a regular Solent boat user 45 knots in a Force 8 is “unlikely”. I know things get faster and better and bigger in retrospect. My 1970’s moped did 50mph (well 44 actually) in the days before I joined the Dockyard... I see Dasher & Smiter on a regular basis and it’s nice to get the nudge to see that they are ladies now as well. Now you’ve got me I’m going to go for the full google mode, here goes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave-class_patrol_boat. 52 knots max from those records. 45 knots In a Force 8, I don’t think so.......

@@PhilbyFavourites Memory gets a bit wobbly after many years. I've done a core dump back to that time to check. The Captain (who was a Lieutenant) and his second-in-command (also a Lieutenant, but close to resigning because he'd been passed-by for promotion) were friends from prep school (ages 6 to 13), the same small, private school that my friend and I had been to. We had a social visit with them on our yacht the next day. My friend's father was a LtCdr in WW2 and took part in many of the most famous actions of the war. He was sunk three times. The two guys from Brave Borderer were very interested to talk about his experience and we spent a couple of hours talking about stuff. I was wrong about most economical speed. It was more like 45kts, not 55kts. Top speed was classified and probably is still classified. Wikipedia wouldn't have the data. The Captain stated that the speed measurement devices on the hull malfunctioned before they got to max speed. Maybe he was just finding a polite way of hiding classified information. However, the fact that Brave Borderer was faster than the most extreme ocean racing power boats could suggest that she was a bit quick. She could maintain 45 kts in force 8. The problem was that the crew's bodies couldn't. The bow could withstand 3 tons per sq inch.

Cummins L-10 isn’t exactly a large displacement engine by semi truck or marine standards. Its only 10 liters. Articulated tractors and City buses. Small trucks in the US often have them for a base engine if you want a single screw day cab.

Took a ride. Yes you can ride on the pt 305 here in New Orleans. These folks at the National ww2 museum have a Higgins with three packards that run on 110 octane. Y’all just can’t imagine the sounds as the fired them up. An the ride, crazy. It costs a fortune to operate. If you want to hear some crazy old school engines book a plane to New Orleans after this virus stuff. They have a two seat p-51 you can ride in too. I’m sure this boat with original engines would have a sound that would scare Satan. God bless.

By the sound and sight of the diesel smoke MTB 102 is no longer using the original early war petrol Isotta Fraschini Italian V18 central engine and twin Packard outboard V8's ? I know its unrealistic to expect that those engines could survive but if the craft was fitted with them then there would be no contest - it would easily out accelerate and perform the modern craft. Great video but please don't set unrealistic expectations

Well a patrol boat isn´t a motor torpedo boat that was built for attacking at high speed. And by the way: in these times nothing should be named "Trumpeter" ......
