Thanks for another well-planned and extremely helpful video. There are more Modern players than Standard at my LGS and though we can't play our proxied decks at FNM I've noticed some playing them @ Denny's where we go "after" FNM and playtest decks we are interested in "for practice and fun." Which works out great for me as a noob that lives in area where it is difficult to find other players. Playing against myself helped just not nearly as much as playing against others. These are the kind of videos/links/comments that I find particularly helpful for improving my play!

Another option: tappedout.net lets you build virtual versions of the deck from EVERY MTG card ever made, 100% for free, and even has an option to draw a hand and playtest. In fact, you don't even have to make the decks. You can just search the Modern category for the deck type you want and pick a pre-built net deck and click playtest. Then just play your physical deck against the virtual one. (If playing with someone else, there are buttons to hide the hand and the like if playing with another person.)

This is what I've been hoping for. Real, practical advice on how to improve in Modern. Sure, the technique could be applied to Standard, but the meta changes for fast and sets rotate out so quickly that you could spend every weekend simply updating your library :)

I have started keeping those useless tip cards to use as the card back of proxies. Also, I find it fascinating that the professor doesn't follow the competitive scene but his advice is extremely helpful to those looking to get into that community. What a guy.

My friend had a really clever way to save money on printer ink in his deck library. He used MS word tables and put the name and effect of three different cards from three different decks in one sleeve. Then we would Indicate which deck we were practicing with with a counter on the deck box. So a proxy would be formatted like this: Noble Hierarch G. (1) Tap for G,W, or U Exalted 0/1. ------------------- Memnite 0 (2) 1/1 ------------------- Grapeshot 1R (3) Deal 1 to a thing Storm No art could be printed out unfortunately and it was a bit hard to update. But we saved a ton over all on ink and sleeves.

I was actually planning on doing something similar but for a much different reason. I'm planning on playing modern but I haven't decided which deck I want to play yet, so I'm going to print out all the decks I like, play them, and then decide which one to buy.

This is actually why I really like MTGO, everything is much cheaper than paper, and if you play a lot of constructed then you get a wide swath of pretty much every deck it's crazy the variety that I have constructed and seen. Since it's so easy to acquire cards.

A) Matt Sperling had an article about a "battle box". It's like a 2 player cube that is made for improving your limited game. B) Metadeck.me is the best way to make proxies. It's a little strange at first, but you are able to make 12 decks with 1 set of sleeves. So 2 copies of the best decks in the format (so you can also play mirrors) plus 12 fringe decks is only 3 sets of sleeves with far less time than proxying 36 different decks.

I made something like this last year, but different. I have decks with different power levels in modern, from just beginning to actual FNM winning decks. I see this "library" as not one to prepare for modern, but to help people get into Magic the Gathering as almost of a Duels of the Planeswalkers feel in real life.

Senna Nieto But it's harder to playtest with tappedout than real cards, since the playtest can't be one deck vs another. Also, personally, it is not as natural as the real cards, and most of the cards effect won't work.

Hey Professor, I love the idea of making a deck library but I think the biggest problem I would have other than finding someone to frequently play with is learning to understand certain decks in the meta that have unclear strategies like non-tribal decks that play Cavern of Souls or ones with a combo that has to be played in a certain way to work. Do you have tips for getting to know them?

Did you make that yourself or is that item available on the retail market? Thanks so much for the videos, I really enjoy them! They have helped me make many decisions. I'm definitely going to attend some Origins pre-release events! One video that I don't see that I would like to see is whether pre-ordering/buying a playset of commons and/or uncommons is worth it.
