I think banning all 5 Incarnations would be a wonderful start, free spells are fine when they can only be used reactively but proactively casting free spells and ending up with a creature for the purposes of blinking/reanimating/attacking/blocking makes Modern feel like Legacy but without the rest of the cards that keep these strategies in check.

Fun story… A couple of years ago, I decided that I didn’t wanna be a casual player anymore. I loved modern, I loved graveyard decks, I loved zombies, and combo decks. I decided to turn my favorite deck into paper. $2000 later, I had a sick Vengevine deck, with all sorts of crazy tech! Then, wizards released Hogaak, The Arisen Necropolis a few weeks later. “Oh boy”, I thought, “this card is like the best topper ever for this deck”! Decided to shell out more money and buy a play set. Then, the cancer moment happened. The niche GY combo deck..became the most broken deck in modern. EVERYONE was playing that deck! Since wizards had just released Hogaak…they went crazy banning like 3 other cards from the deck instead. These cards were basically the combo engine itself. They literally gutted the deck I spent over $2000 on to play magic at my LGS. Banning the engine still didn’t work (probably because Torturous Timmy designing Hogaak and thinking it was an acceptable card was a mistake). They then banned Hogaak…because even banning the entire graveyard combo deck couldn’t keep their “money card” from having to be banned as well. I never touched paper magic again. A few months later, I sold my collection. Made about $900. Lost about $1100 because…Hogaak. I’ll never forget that dickhead monsters name. I’ve never touched paper again…I mean sure I can go play that garbage in legacy…but $5000+ to play my favorite deck in an even more busted format just isn’t worth it. Modern is dead because it’s too costly of a format when they ban things from it possibly more regularly than standard itself. You can’t invest in a deck that isn’t a “fair deck” otherwise the game police will come and take your money away.

Fury is definitely a problem card. This one card basically took tribal decks out of the equation. Ephemerate is a problematic card as well with its evoke synergy. Regarding Shardless Agent: I think one of the points that is rarely discussed is how it enabled the deck to be RUG instead of Jund colors (that Living had to play back in the day) in order to play 8 3-mana Cascade enablers. I think at this point with modern horions influxes, the best solution for those wishing to get back to old modern because of nostalgia or because of lack of endless financial resources to spend on hundreds of playsets of cardboard that costs 20 cents to make would be to have a modern no horizons format. That way standard sets still affect it but it's a LOT more affordable. Alternatively there can be many many new archytypes between modern horizons synergies and the interesting standard cards being released (like shape anew getting phyrexian portal) and so the best way, and really the only way, to play this format is to proxy. Like one could even make nice proxies but even for those with the financial resources to spend on cardboard costing like 200x what it costs to produce, proxying still makes more sense. And when all game pieces are freely available it's a lot easier for brews to pop up and for actual diversity in decks and archytypes to be played. Also facing evoke elementals, urza's sagas, ragavans, and archon of crueltys hurts a lot less when one has access to those cards or access to all the expensive answers to them. I think those are the best solutions at this point. Ofc, the places where modern horizons sets and especially standard sets like kamigawa neon dynasty and brothers war and dominaria united shine is in producing new unique effects that arent busted but that complement existing archytypes in need of more tools or a small buff or help increase synergy or even help spawn new archytypes. However, given the direction wizards is going I would just expect mh3 to have even more busted evoke creatures except literal force of wills or like force of will that's a creature, with evoke flashback or something.

sWotC may come to the realization that the mandate to double profits has come at the cost of ruining all its formats. The issue is, once they realize what people have been telling them for years, if they are able to stop the existing formats from completely crumbling. No real Pro scene. Abolishing meaningful events that bring players together. Slamming product releases so close together that things like prereleases have lost all their appeal and draw. They invalidated 20+ years of playing and collecting when releasing Modern Masters 2 which replaced every deck played in Modern with decks based on the new cards intended to do just that. They lack a digital system of playing that meaningfully interacts with the physical game and existing collections. The list of issues goes on, but all this has damaged the formats, the competitive landscape, and the overall brand itself. For what? Doubling profits in the near term that may destroy the integrity of the game and devastate the player base going forward. Hasbro sees this as a glorious success because their investors win in the short term, all that matters to them. If the asset of WotC stops performing within what Hasbro finds acceptable they will have no issue blowing it to pieces to sell off the scraps.

I've definitely noticed a huge influx of new legendaries and cards that really only make sense in commander in recent standard sets whereas Ledger Shredder is the only standard card I've seen that can hang in modern. I think they even gave the example of how reprinting thoughtseize into Theros ruined that standard format and equated designing cards strong enough for modern means a bad standard.

@watsup60842 жыл бұрын
That is what modern is supposed to be - all cards went through a standard rotation. If you were only motivated by greed, what would you do? Just leave the format alone and let people play with their old standard cards, buying what they need to move to modern from the secondary market OR print the most busted cards that are required to keep up forcing the modern playerbase to buy products from you. They are a corporation and they will make decisions to maximize their profits - there are no altruistic motives like design the most fun, diverse and balanced card game. They can get away with it because they have the most loyal customers.

the point that makes you think shit hit the fan was "Modern Horizons" collections were meant to be collections to place cards to powerful to be printed in standard directly into modern, and it came in 2 months before Eldraine (aka: the most overpowered set since mirrodin) and even after that they kept printing cards powerful enough to contest the non-rotating formats in standard, so naturally MH2 was ensured to do heavy damage everywhere.

Fury and Solitude are the biggest problem of MH2. Ragavan is busted but easy to deal with, dies to everything and get stop a blocker, it doesn't feel good to get hit by it but it doesn't lose you the game on the spot. Same with Urza Saga, it is also busted but dies to hate, it is like dredge, you gotta prepare for it or you will get rekt by it. Fury and Solitude on the other hand impact the board too much and invalid multiple turns of effort with too few resources invested. Like your twin example, Ragavan needs to deal damage and Saga needs multiple turns while Fury and Solitude only needs one mana. They singlehandedly make pure creature decks obsolete. I think 4c is a fine slow/grindy deck if they don't have so much early interaction as well. 4C should also be punished by aggro decks.

In MH1, when they printed Hogaak, I remember seeing a pro commenting "this is dumb". I think the same every time someone does Ragavan turn 1 or worse, dash. @Death_by_Tech2 жыл бұрын
solitude and fury. their floor is often 3 for 2 without even needing ephemerate. then it’s just nuts from there. otherwise the format is ok. if i had to specifically pick one it would be solitude. The effect should have been “destroy” not “exile”
@jaggededge112 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with the MH2 Elementals was that they have an ETB trigger, when they should have had a LTB trigger. An LTB trigger would have made it so that in order to get their value upfront, you'd have had to Evoke it. And while you would have still been able to combo them with Undying, you wouldn't be able to get all their value upfront (And more so, you'd not be able to abuse them with blink effects). As for Modern, I do think the biggest target will probably be Ephemerate. The cards removal impacts the least amount of decks and is a common (So they won't lose out on those sweet reprint $$$). That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they also removed the artifact lands off the list (As well as Blazing Shoal)
@DavianLicanius2 жыл бұрын
The real problem to me is the price. I mean I don't even play mtg anymore because to be semi-competitive you have to spend hundreds and I can't justify that for cardboard, you mentioned legacy but it's even more expensive than modern so I get why people are put off. Plus if you already have modern cards it's not as hard to transfer them between decks as it would be to get into a format like legacy imo. I mean the fact some cards can go for 80$ like Ragavaan and you need 4 is crazy. I could almost buy a PS5 off 2-3 playsets of MH2 mythics.
@iTaLenTZ0272 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. Modern has turned into Horizons Block. The second problem is there is no good paper alternative. Pioneer straight up sucks. It is boring and dead. Legacy is crazy expensive and even though I have the cards to play, most people don't hence there are no tournaments. I wasn't planning on quitting the game but since a year I have basically done so. Rather than banning cards, I think that reverting bans on cards would rebalance modern. Bring back Splinter Twin, Birthing Pod, Mox Opal, Punishing Fire, ect.. I feel like if they wanna keep MH2 cards around(and I think they should) then reinjecting the format with archetypes that people loved that were also quite powerful might be the way to go. Subtlety, Force of Negation and Fury in a Splinter Twin Deck would make sure that you would almost always go off. Then there is also Counterspell and Flusterstorm in the format as well that would easily replace the deck's control package. In the end, you could just slam the the Splinter Twin into the Murktide shell. Even just putting in the basic 2x Deceiver Exarch, 1x Kiki Jiki, 4x Pestermite, 4 Splinter Twin, most Murktide shells could still keep in 2-3 Ragavans if they wanted.

Ban bans, then make stipulations that limit how much a deck can cost. You can then have two forms of each game type. Limit cost and Unlimited cost. @bobby458252 жыл бұрын
That'd be hilarious but wizards pretends they legally don't "know" about the secondary market. I think it's intellectually dishonest to pretend to not know about something in this day and age, when you can just google it in 3 seconds, but it is what it is.
