I love Approach of the Second Sun. For a fun fact - the first Approach you cast doesn't have to resolve, so depending on your deck makeup (or if you make your deck with this in mind) you can actually counter your own spell, putting it into your graveyard and making it easier to cast the second time. Hell, depending on your format you could even use Narset's Reversal, Unsubstantiate or something similar to return the spell to your hand, circumventing the graveyard and library entirely (in the Narset's case you'll also get another 7 life, if that's relevant).

Sad that the Painter Combo isn't in it (Grindstone + Painter's Servant). There is a reason why your lands never should have a color themselves (they are colorless even if they produce colored mana, for those who are new to the game - Painter's Servant gives each card a color, and Grindstone mills two cards plus two more if they shared a color, plus two more if they shared a color ad infinitum - meaning that Grindstone will mill the entire deck if all cards share the same color).

@MrZer0934 жыл бұрын
As someone who has played other games with more prevalent alternate win conditions, it’s a very slippery slope. Decks built around them tend to play a different game than most decks do and it be just not fun in the slightest if not done carefully. After all, when most decks are built assuming the opponent tries to win via the rules, it can be frustrating when that opponent doesn’t try to win that way but some way else.
@dyciefisk25354 жыл бұрын
For example Hedron Alignment plays like one person trying to solve a puzzle while the staving off the opponent, who acts as a clock and complication to said puzzle. At that point you might not be playing magic anymore.
@a.velderrain88494 жыл бұрын
Your deck therefore shouldn't generally be built to stop your opponent from winning, but rather to make sure YOU win. If you have a deck that can kill your opponent by Turn 4 it doesn't matter if they can complete some win con by Turn 5, you have the advantage.
@jakeapplegate66424 жыл бұрын
A. Velderrain Amen brother!
@MrZer0934 жыл бұрын
It depends. I’m having Exodia flashbacks mostly and those decks stall like crazy by just saying nope to the opponent so often, especially early on. And I am very certain Magic has similar. I mean, Jace and Thassa’s Oracle seem to just like doing stall control until they can hit their win combo. I would assume they have ways to stall out turn 4 wins down to turn 5 or 6 or whatever they need to in order to wait out the game for their own win. Therein lies my point. They don’t need to attack, just play stall. So many decks are made assuming the opponent will actually attack at some point and these same stall decks will also just not let you play either. That’s why it’s frustrating.
@a.velderrain88494 жыл бұрын
@@MrZer093 Dimir Inverter, the top Pioneer deck right now and an alternate wincon deck using Thassa's Oracle and Jace, relies heavily on discard effects like Thoughtseize and creature removal like Drown in the Loch to stall the game out. Indestructible creatures (like the Theros gods or Gideon planeswalkers) can defeat that strategy fairly easily. Arclight Phoenix also seems like a good game plan against that, since making you discard the Phoenix actually helps you out, the deck has tons of redundancy, and Phoenix comes back from being removed way too easily. The more the deck leans in on stall strategies, the less consistently it can get the wincon, and the more turns you typically get to try and win. So decks like Inverter have to prioritize getting a Turn 4 Inverter into Turn 5 Jace or Oracle for the win, and have less slots dedicated to making sure they stop you.

Kinda surprised that Felidar Sovereign didn't make this list, he's basically Test of Endurance as a creature, on top of being decently beefy in power and defense and having vigilance and lifelink. He can easily be tutored for with Wild Pair, a green enchantment with a CMC of 6 (2 green, 2 colorless)that makes it so whenever you cast a creature from your hand and it enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a creature with the same total of power and toughness added up (example: you play avenger of zendikar 5/5, wild pair triggers and you tutor for felidar which is a 4/6 but both of those equal up to 10).
@darkmatter32x4 жыл бұрын
Problem is, it requires a lot of mana to cast, in addition it is a creature, not so hard remove on the board. It good in commander though.
@Devilish4204 жыл бұрын
@@darkmatter32x Well to be fair, enchantments aren't all that hard to remove either. Also, if you have green in your colors you can legit pull it off but yea it mainly is a commander combo though. I just got him for a win con for my Abzan colored Angel token generator deck that has wild pair in it and I also have privileged position and Avacyn Angel of Hope in it too for that indestructible/hexproof double whammy.
@TheSquareOnes4 жыл бұрын
Not knowing the competitive history of either card, I'd assume it has to do with the fact that Test of Endurance had the benefit of existing at a time when it was able to be somewhat successful whereas Felidar Sovereign presumably hasn't been. He said that the Test of Endurance deck that earned the points quickly fell away and the card hasn't made a comeback since, so it could just be that "gain a bunch of life to win the game" is on longer an effect that is likely to gain points in any format even if they print it on cards that you believe to be better than what came before. So if Felidar Sovereign were printed first maybe it would be on the list instead, but it wasn't so it isn't and now neither card is doing much.

Just play a Phage the Untouchable and for the lulz use the Fractured Identity on her, doesn't say "you win the game" but it is fun as hell.

Fractured identity also works with demonic pact after choosing the third option and immortal coil with g/y exile. So much fun. I love fractured identity

Disagree with your list criteria for this one! Jace the mind sculptor or mind slaver lock seems to be legit alternate win cons to me as well
