They printed a lot of good planeswalker removal in Spark and M20, and they needed walkers to dodge around both. You can see the twins and Sorin both designes with the same power creep. They tried to backpedal and say it wasn't intentional, but they absolutely knew it was.

I was at a Yugioh tournament, hadn't yet touched a deck of Magic yet but had looked into it, when someone showed me this card. I just asked "so it blocks people from playing cards over 3/3, basically? Wow that sounds OP". Wizards said they expected it to be used on Food tokens, lol

Minsc and Boo is arguably a stronger card than Oko, but it costs an extra mana. I think both are fine for legacy.

I forsee a The One Ring ban incoming. Its showing up at a rate of 1.67 copies per deck in the upcoming Pro-tour (LotR). Orcish Bowmaster is showing at at a rate of 1.53 per deck.

Nah, that fuckin monkey was way worse early on (still was up til Bowmasters started blasting his ass) and slow grindy decks haven't been good in modern since reddit cried and got Uro and mystic sanctuary banned. It's worth noting that in.legacy, Bowmasters is played nearly 3x as much as Oko was, so it might need banned there.

Wow, look at that mana base in STANDARD - 8:42 4 x Ancient Tomb + 4 x Tolarian Academy? That's already insane, but when your deck also includes a bunch of 0 mana artifacts that also produce mana (4 x Mox Diamond + 4 x Lotus Petal), this would be broken even in Legacy today... But hey, why not throw in some Mana Vaults just for good measure? Kind of surprised they didn't run City of Traitors too, but maybe that was already banned, or they just preferred their lands sticking around.

In Arena, the most infuriating thing about Tibalt's Trickery deck is that it was so trivial to build, so easy to play and everyone's playing it at the Play queue to spam daily win tasks. It was the only deck that actively made me want to see an RDW deck for some variety.

Ahhh the #1 is amazing, few cards are ever banned before they are released. I can think of an example in my favourite card game Yu-Gi-Oh though, Temple of the Kings was released banned due to its absurdly strong effect. Heck, it might even make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

That's misleading. TotK was banned during a time when OCG and TCG shared a banlist. The card was around 9 years prior in the OCG. It wasn't _unheard of_ for cards to already be limited by the time they were released because of this, but outright bans were very rare. Sixth Sense was another one that was banned for ages before being released in the TCG.

Magus of the Candleabra has similar potential, I use it to combo for infinite mana with Ashaya, Soul of the Wild Same kind of cheesy fun, long as you've got at least one way to net positive mana from it

​@@grahamoliver1470I feel initiative was playtested heavily in multiplayer, and as we can see; it's not heavily used in that setting. It was balanced completely fairly and objectively correctly for the format it was intended for. And while they may have playtested other formats, they likely didn't playtest Pauper much because at the time that set was being designed, while Pauper was an 'official format' (as in it was mentioned on WotC's site), it didn't have much official support or sanctioned tournaments. And that was the format it ended up causing the most problems in (yes, I'm aware it affected Legacy and Vintage to an extent, but it's not broken in either of those, it just shook up the meta a little which is a good thing).

@@andrewsparkes6275 I agree, initiative was certainly well tested for multiplayer and is actually very fun and interesting there. However, it received next to zero 1vs1 testing, as WotC has even admitted. I would also saying that it "shook up the meta a little" is a massive understatement, particularly for legacy. White initiative immediately became one of the best decks, very possibly the best deck in the format at the time, and warped the entire meta around it. Even after the White Plume Adventurerer ban there are still 4-5 incredibly viable initiative centered decks in that format alone. Vintage still has a very competitive White Initiative and pauper was equally as affected as legacy. If it were put into modern or any less powerful format I believe it would warp it equally if not more so.

@@grahamoliver1470 That's totally fair; I'll admit I'm not as well-versed on the older formats, and I didn't realise it was THAT bad (I thought it just introduced another strong deck, not that the whole format entirely warped). That said, to me at least, the Pauper thing can be forgiven - it was treated at the time as a casual format more akin to how commander used to be than a true competitive format; officially "recognised" but not "supported". It was actually Initiative that caused that Pauper Panel thing to be introduced in the first place, iirc, and caused it to become more supported in the proper ways. So ultimately more good came out of it for Pauper than bad, once the bannings did happen.

I owned 3 Beta Icy Manipulators in 95 or 96, and was playing a friend a game for a 4th, not real ante, just MtG for a cool card. He was playing blue white control Serra Angel, I was blue black control Tormud's Crypt/Timetwister deck out. He had a Serra on the board and I was down to 4 or less, he had one card left in his library. I cast Demonic Tutor, fully expecting the counter spell. He laughed and said he'd just counter what I tutored for. I grabbed Maze of Ith. And a 4th Beta Icy.

Also thanks to Arena and Magic in general moving to be a lot more digital focused recently cards we're able to get a large amount of data and testing for cards quicker than we could before. It also encourages WotC to be quicker on bans because people are experiencing these cards every day rather than just once a week.

Once Upon a Time was so insane that it was being played in decks that absolutely could not pay the mana cost for it--it was get it on turn 1 and make it free or it was dead. And it was still amazing in those decks!

I don't think that aside from Mental Mistep it's current function really has a problem with cards being played outside of its colours. Especially with a lot of the newer phyrexian mana cards coming with some downside compared to paying mana and also requiring regular coloured mana too

Channel, Necropotence, Force of Will... They tried the "life instead of mana before" and everytime it has resulted on broken cards and combos because devs would forget one important lesson: the only hitpoint that matters is the last one. It doesn't matter how many restrictions you put on it, "life for mana" will be broken.

@@JoeyDCote I think it is more the fact that it being in izzet colors would create an unfair advantage if your opponents didn't also have access to those colors. It might seem tame, but always being able to copy your best spell at a given moment is stronger than it seems.

Maybe it's a little less potent now that there's a companion tax, but back before they errata'd that you'd be dumb to not run it in even an Izzet Aggro deck that barely ran any non-creature spells. Even if all it was was a flash 3/2 for 3 that would have been too powerful for every Izzet player to have access to at the start of every game.

I really wish they would just "ban" the entire Companion format from competitive Magic. That way, people can still play these cards like any other normal card, and even let Lutri be unbanned in Commander, as you couldn't make it your companion at all.

I think the uptick in bans in recent years is due to the much faster nature of solving the format these days. The prevalence of online play, particularly due to the events of 2020, means so many more games were played in a much shorter period of time.

So my favorite fact about the Lutri ban is that the CAG had to decide on whether to allow the companion mechanic as is, allow it with Lutri banned, or just refuse to use it. But the kicker is, the only companion they were shown to make the decision was Lutri. They weren't able to see any of the others. Yorion is _literally unplayable_ in commander - you cannot play it as a companion as its companion condition violates the deck building rules, and Lurrus only had _one_ commander at the time that met its condition. Like. Maybe the other companions were important context for that decision? That instead of 1/10th of them not being playable given the ban, it was at minimum 2/10ths? Just a truly ridiculous sequence of affairs.

To be honest, I still believe that the Commander Rules Committee panicked too much with Lutri: true, it would give decks with Izzet identity an advantage, but ultimately it is just a strictly worse Dualcaster Mage that opponents would see coming, nothing gamebreaking given the insane power level of the format. Especially later after the Companion mechanic was restricted, I don't think that unban the otter would break the format. As for all these recent cards getting quickly banned, I guess it is the inevitable result of WotC pushing power level to sell more packs and their insane release schedule that does not allow for the poor folks in their RnD to conduct appropriate testing.

even though it’s not a super good card, just having an extra creature that you can only get by playing izzet is way too much. jegantha is constantly played in 60 card formats not because they want a big mana dork, but because the deck fits the conditions and there’s no reason to not add it. i imagine it like playing a commander with partner by itself. even if you don’t need an extra color or another commander, having an extra creature you always have access to will always just be so much better.

It wasn't a strictly worse Dualcaster Mage because it let you bend the rules of Commander and have 101 cards. Before the rules for Companion were changed the Izzet players just had an extra card that they'd have had absolutely zero reason not to include because it doesn't count against the 99 or your commander. If Chimney Imp were allowed to fit in any black deck as a card that sat outside the 100 it'd still see play in basically any black deck that wasn't running another Companion because literally why wouldn't you?

Those 17 days seemed like years. I hated that freaking version of Omnath so deeply. I played Zenikar rising standard a lot and getting rid of that Escape to the wilds/ Omnath crap was such a relief. Well, Lutri wouldn't be that powerful in Commander, neither would it really alter the metagame. The RC just banned it cuz it'd definitely be a nuance. Kinda like why Mental Misstep and Gitaxian Probe were banned in Modern. Btw, the reason why Lutri was banned so quickly was probably due to that it's a compromise. At the set's release, every EDH player was talking about how the Companion is an another utterly useless mechanic (like wishes), cuz there's clearly no sideboard in EDH, and according to RC's ruling, "outside the game" cannot be interpreted as "from your personal collection" (although this is almost purely a casual format). However surprisingly, the RC quickly altered the ruling just to make Companions work in EDH, and simultaneously banned Lutri. The RC also said they specifically contacted WotC prior to this. You can imagine that WotC definitely didn't want to see the whole EDH player base lose interest in all of the Companions.

I'm working on a kinda jank Trickery deck with shadowborn apostles, emrakul, and possibly one big daemon. The issue is mulliganing until you get the trickery.

Lutri the Spellchaser shouldn't be on this list since its ban is in a format not governed by Wizards of the Coast. If I came up with a format and got recognition/ endorsed by Wizards and then decided that all the cards from the Dr.Who set were banned from it prior to their release, would those cards be on the list? Of course not, because that's just silly.

If the format is entirely endorsed by Wizards of the Coast to the point that they release products specifically for that format, I think it definitely belongs here. We're not talking about some small format -- we're talking about Magic's most popular format. There is an entire design team at Wizards of the Coast that designs products for the format. WotC even keeps the banned and restricted list on their website. So, your example of creating some random format doesn't really hold water.

@@NizzahonMagic My example specifically stated "If I got endorsed by wotc" in it as well, so I don't see how its irrelevant. Additionally, its not a comeptitive format nor is it a ban list created by WOTC itself. There are no commander tournaments. There are on commander top 8s. As stated by the board that maintain's Commander "Commander is for fun. It’s a socially interactive, multiplayer Magic: the Gathering format full of wild interactions and epic plays, specifically designed as an alternative to tournament Magic. " Additionally, this ban list holds no power in the casual form either. WOTC doesn't tell stores that they need to adhere to it and there isn't anything stopping them from banning or removing cards based on their customer's preferences. Chances are, you could put Lutri in your 99 and go play in a FNM and no one is really going to bat an eye. There isn't a judge that is going to tell you to remove it. Because of all of that, Lutri's ban probably shouldn't be taken too seriously and considered in videos like these. Afterall, if a card is banned in a format and there are no competitive tournaments in that format, is it even banned?
