Many of you are asking whether Homelands is worse than Fallen Empires, so I thought I would answer that here: Yes, it is worse. Fallen Empires has two fairly iconic cards that have been heavily played in multiple formats: Hymn to Tourach and High Tide, both of which have more points than anything on this list. Additionally, there are many other cards in the set with 5 or more points including, but not limited to: Order of Leitbur, Order of the Ebon Hand, Icatian Javelineer, the sacrifice land cycle, Goblin Grenade. Those are the ones I know about without going deep on the research, which would likely reveal even more.

@Luke Steiner How is it worse? I think I did a good job laying out why it isn't.

Goblin Grenade might be one of the cheapest 5 damage sorceries in the entire history of the game. Sure you still need to sac a goblin but goblins are also cheap.
@TheMajesticYak04 жыл бұрын
As a player from those days, I knew Fallen Empires wasn't going to be on the bottom. Hymn to Tourach is probably the most powerful and efficient discard spell ever printed. It made black a beast with Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter, and Necropotence (and Sinkhole). Games could end before they started. The Orders were also super powerful in black or white aggro and Goblin Grenade was an absolute (ahem) bomb. I think Fallen Empires gets a bad rap because the overall power level was so far down from Legends and lots of cards were awful. Plus it was so heavily overprinted that cards from the set would never see any real value because they were always so plentiful.
@SR-di7ox4 жыл бұрын
Although FE was a terrible set, it was not without it's good cards. Many of which only started seeing play after other cards were printed. Part of the reason why FE is considered a horrible set is the massive print runs and no "rare" cards. You can still get boxes of FE for a reasonable price, even though it's over 20 years old, that's how much the set was printed...

Autumn Willow is not only proto-Shroud, but also proto-Hexproof! Ihsan's Shade may seem weak nowadays, but I can see how he could've once been powerful. His 5/5 body put him within the upper tier of creatures back in these days, at least creatures without severe drawbacks. On top of his immunity to white removal, being black made him immune to a lot of black removal as well (Terror, Dark Banishing), and his toughness made him resistant to red removal staples such as Lightning Bolt. Memory Lapse, ironically, is one card that must have seemed more on the underwhelming side back in the days when two-mana hard counterspells with no drawbacks, such as literally Counterspell, were a thing. Nowadays a hard "counter target spell" is usually no less than 3 mana (Cancel).

I’ve been intrested in Makeing a serrated arrows proliferate deck, as it seems rather effective way of keeping multiple stocks of -1/-1 counters, needling or killing your opponents. With a very reasnoble ability to serve as a annoying form of control. What with two serrated arrows down, effectively makeing x/2s dead on drop, and 3, 4, if you can get a full set out, due to near infinite arrow counters and no other cost but tapping serrated arrows to send them off your opponents direction. Not a very good strategy mind, but a intresting One to consider

Fallen empires sucked so bad people have forgotten it and think kamigawa was worse.
@MrZer0934 жыл бұрын
Kamigawa’s main issues were the following: All over the place designs. The sets generally lacked any focus and just had a lot of flashy cards. While some are format defining, they only do so with cards from other sets. The Legend rule at the time made it so once you played a legend, the opponent couldn’t play the same one. In a block where legends were the focus, mirror matches were hell. And lastly, this was fresh off Mirrodin. That set had so many busted cards that Wizards wanted to play it safe and avoided making anything too much and it went the other way and made a lot of underwhelming cards. They even did a blatant cover-up by not doing any standard tournaments until Mirrodin rotated out so it was just block (hence a lot of mirror matches) and extended for the most part. But overall, it has a unique place in Magic’s history, not just for the format defining stuff but for the aesthetics it had. It’s probably the most fondly remembered of the “bad sets”. I feel it could do well if Wizards could avoid the same problems as last time and I feel they could.
