Many of you are asking whether Homelands is worse than Fallen Empires, so I thought I would answer that here: Yes, it is worse. Fallen Empires has two fairly iconic cards that have been heavily played in multiple formats: Hymn to Tourach and High Tide, both of which have more points than anything on this list. Additionally, there are many other cards in the set with 5 or more points including, but not limited to: Order of Leitbur, Order of the Ebon Hand, Icatian Javelineer, the sacrifice land cycle, Goblin Grenade. Those are the ones I know about without going deep on the research, which would likely reveal even more.

Goblin Grenade might be one of the cheapest 5 damage sorceries in the entire history of the game. Sure you still need to sac a goblin but goblins are also cheap.
@TheMajesticYak0

As a player from those days, I knew Fallen Empires wasn't going to be on the bottom. Hymn to Tourach is probably the most powerful and efficient discard spell ever printed. It made black a beast with Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter, and Necropotence (and Sinkhole). Games could end before they started. The Orders were also super powerful in black or white aggro and Goblin Grenade was an absolute (ahem) bomb. I think Fallen Empires gets a bad rap because the overall power level was so far down from Legends and lots of cards were awful. Plus it was so heavily overprinted that cards from the set would never see any real value because they were always so plentiful.
@SR-di7ox

Although FE was a terrible set, it was not without it's good cards. Many of which only started seeing play after other cards were printed. Part of the reason why FE is considered a horrible set is the massive print runs and no "rare" cards. You can still get boxes of FE for a reasonable price, even though it's over 20 years old, that's how much the set was printed...

Not only was Ihsan's Shade immune to Swords to Plowshares, it was also immune to almost all of the Black removal that almost always had a condition of only being able to destroy non-Black creatures, and 5 toughness was enough that Red would need to invest a fair bit of effort to kill.

Autumn Willow is not only proto-Shroud, but also proto-Hexproof! Ihsan's Shade may seem weak nowadays, but I can see how he could've once been powerful. His 5/5 body put him within the upper tier of creatures back in these days, at least creatures without severe drawbacks. On top of his immunity to white removal, being black made him immune to a lot of black removal as well (Terror, Dark Banishing), and his toughness made him resistant to red removal staples such as Lightning Bolt. Memory Lapse, ironically, is one card that must have seemed more on the underwhelming side back in the days when two-mana hard counterspells with no drawbacks, such as literally Counterspell, were a thing. Nowadays a hard "counter target spell" is usually no less than 3 mana (Cancel).

Late comment here, but it’s because modern storm doesn’t really play anything to search for with it since gifts was banned. And when gifts was legal it was often rough to spend extra mana getting to it.

@@maryjones104 Memory Lapse costs only 2 AND can counter anything. Putting the card on the top of you opponent library is not that much of a problem as it also means you know what your opponent has in his hand. Memory Lapse is a control deck Time Walk. If your opponent has no good attacks and can only cast one important spell during their turn (pretty common against control decks), time walk them. Same mana cost, same effect. It's absolutely incredible and massively underrated
@SmuggyOcelot
@SmuggyOcelot 4 жыл бұрын
@@DaveyDAKFAE I'm not sure I understand your point, as Time Walk allows you to take another turn, at 1B at sorcery speed, while Memory Lapse is a counterspell that puts the countered card on top of its owners library. @AnsticePalo
@AnsticePalo 4 жыл бұрын
@@SmuggyOcelot Yes. Memory Lapse ensured they had to draw the same card they couldn't cast the previous turn. They aren't getting something new that could help their board state. @MrZer093
@MrZer093 4 жыл бұрын
Kamigawa’s main issues were the following: All over the place designs. The sets generally lacked any focus and just had a lot of flashy cards. While some are format defining, they only do so with cards from other sets. The Legend rule at the time made it so once you played a legend, the opponent couldn’t play the same one. In a block where legends were the focus, mirror matches were hell. And lastly, this was fresh off Mirrodin. That set had so many busted cards that Wizards wanted to play it safe and avoided making anything too much and it went the other way and made a lot of underwhelming cards. They even did a blatant cover-up by not doing any standard tournaments until Mirrodin rotated out so it was just block (hence a lot of mirror matches) and extended for the most part. But overall, it has a unique place in Magic’s history, not just for the format defining stuff but for the aesthetics it had. It’s probably the most fondly remembered of the “bad sets”. I feel it could do well if Wizards could avoid the same problems as last time and I feel they could.

I’ve been intrested in Makeing a serrated arrows proliferate deck, as it seems rather effective way of keeping multiple stocks of -1/-1 counters, needling or killing your opponents. With a very reasnoble ability to serve as a annoying form of control. What with two serrated arrows down, effectively makeing x/2s dead on drop, and 3, 4, if you can get a full set out, due to near infinite arrow counters and no other cost but tapping serrated arrows to send them off your opponents direction. Not a very good strategy mind, but a intresting One to consider

A buddy of mine found homelands packs for about 1.50 a pack in ATL and bought about 14, and we "drafted" it, boy is that set not made for drafting, torture was really the only way to kill stuff and it was just stalling mess where neither of could do much.

Cerulean Drake is not what I would call strictly a better Sea Sprite owing to it having the Fearie creature type, which we all know Lorwyn block loved to death. Drake? Much less loved of a creature type. I would argue in general, the counter effect is better than that, especially against decks without targeted effects. At that point, Drake is the same effects with a worse creature type. Not strictly better.
@NizzahonMagic
@NizzahonMagic 4 жыл бұрын
It is strictly better the way most people use the phrase. Fact is, no Faerie deck will play that Faerie, so it having a more meaningful creature type is irrelevant.

I would argue sea sprites is betrer than cerulean drake since faeries is a better creature type now than it used to be

Oh yeah I love memory lapse, ohhh you really want that powerful spell, try again next turn, oh sorry not next turn either, oh I'm out of memory lapse, counter spell. it's really evil with cards like Mungdungu and other cads that make you spend life or mana to cast, and then when the person pays it all, make them do it next turn.

Nizzahon Magic Yeah, I think I’ve seen all of those... I meant like out of all the classes which have had the most impact, like do soldiers or wizards have more points the way you do them.

Eventually, Merchant Scroll will pass Serrated Arrows as it is a great card in both Legacy and Vintage The second worst set might actually be Weatherlight

That should be a top 20. Bolt is #1 since it's legal everywhere except standard. Brainstorm, ponder, preordain, Delver, Gurmag, Hymn, Serum visions, llanower elves, skewer, rift, spike. That's 12 right there. I suspect terminate and arrows could crack a top 20

Although probably the worst set, Homelands does narrowly beat Fallen Empires in value. Fallen Empires put all its best cards at common for some reason, while Homelands has a few rares of interest for commander.

What's the worst set since 2015? I honestly say Kaladesh. Even though it was busted at the time, almost nothing is played in eternal formats except enemy fastlands. Rivals of Ixalan is pretty forgettable too.

As a young teenager just getting into this game...for phase 1 I'll call it, I couldn't really understand the game, I just loved the art and I owned a lot, even then I knew how bad it really was, however.. Without collecting bits of every set to know, this was most definitely my least favorite set, next to empires, however...homelands became that guilty pleasure, buying packs became horribley great mistakes.
