Especially equipment-like cards like acidic dagger. Somehow they did not realize that they were making even worse versions of auras - you have to pay mana to activate it every turn AND it still goes to the graveyard if the creature dies. Truly the worst of both worlds.

OH MY GOD. TEEKA'S DRAGON DIDN'T MAKE A WORST OF LIST IT COULD HAVE. WE DID IT. (It was a Rare in Mirage). 2:30, wow not even the worst Rare in Mirage. Truly amazing. Edit: Oh my goodness, so many bad Rares from Mirage. Yet Teeka's Dragon isn't among them. Respect its name for all time.

Even despite how absurdly difficult it is for me to come up with segues for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)" on these lists, the worst cards lists are easily my favourite genre.

Many of these designs are early versions of effects that would later be useful. Acidic Dagger is Basilisk Collar. Malignant Growth is Fevered Visions. North Star is Chromatic Lantern. Psychic Transfer is Axis of Mortality. Assembly Hall is Pattern Matcher. Of the "unique" designs, I actually like Razor Pendulum. It's got good flavor and it's a neat effect that gives colors besides red some reach. If you changed some numbers it would be a great design. The real duds are the laces and Hint of Insanity, which are bad ideas done badly. Color changing has never been worth a card and Hint of Insanity is so bad it isn't even a good counter to Assembly Hall.

Color changing has had fringe usage historically. Usually it's attached to something more actively useful (most times you turn a land into a creature, that is a color changing effect since it goes from colorless to colored), but in some niche cases (such as Wild Mongrel) the real power of the color change effect was in how the ability slots into that particular meta. A 2 mana 2/2 that can get +1/+1 and change color at instant speed is whatever, but it's real strength is having a discard for cost effect in a Theshold and Madness centered Block.

I like Helm of the Host as Assembly Hall. Both artifacts, both cost about the same - but Helm of the Host puts the creature copy into play for you, repeatedly.

Actually, Psychic Transfer is a "fixed" version of Mirror Universe. A lot of rares in Mirage were toned-down versions of extremely powerful older cards. The most famous is Lion's Eye Diamond as a "fixed" Black Lotus. Though LED would eventually become great in its own right, for years it was considered the worst card in Mirage. Then there was stuff like Nettletooth Djinn as a fixed Juzam Djinn, etc.

North Star used to be one of a very few cards that would let Sen Triplets cast red or green spells, before they changed the commander rules so you could have mana of any color in your pool (used to be mana of the wrong color identity would become instantly colorless). It was that, celestial dawn, false dawn, and sunglasses of urza (red only) if I remember right.

North Star would be useful if they banned every other card capable of making 3 or more colors of mana that cost 3 mana or less. So every manalith, darksteel ingot, birds of paradise, shard land...... There was a time when Conflux was out but Alara Reborn wasn't that someone might consider North Star for Progenitus or Doorway to Nothingness. #1 Child of Alara and Maelstrom Archangel cost only 5, not 10, and are worth it with weaker cards like the Mirage Fetch lands. #2 Borderposts on top of Shard lands on top of Vivids started making every mana base much more Brassy even before rare land cycles really took off with M10. #3 Lotus Cobra was extremely pushed and you could make good arguments to cut Birds of Paradise from multicolor decks if you had Onslaught Fetch Lands. 4. Mox Opal is, fun fact, low key playable with Signets and Borderposts in Commander. I mean that you Don't need to go to a lot of effort to Also get Grim Monolith or Mana Crypt if you have Opal. It will start working with Swords and Skullclamp and Lightning Greaves very quickly. That's different from many other Artifact ramp spells that do really need to be played with all the other Artifact ramp spells (like Lotus Petal and Mana Vault, which are great when used properly but can be put in a wrong deck) M10 Inn brought Checklands in 10 cards, not 5. In a very short space of time Wizards had begun to power creep multicolor access such that Darksteel Ingot and Manalith.....honestly weren't good anymore. Back when Darksteel Ingot was arguably the very best card in the game like itself, North Star filtering any number of mana was useful for the heavy color commit Sunburst, Domain, and Alara deck themes that could show up in casual. 2009 was quite a time to be alive. Enemy Fetch Lands + Lotus Cobra was the exact moment North Star became fully obsolete, as it actually crept a bit past Birds of Paradise's power.

Hint of Insanity - a counterplay card for the 20 plague rat and 20 black lotus deck meta, that just took to long to get to print. I bet it's Old Fogey's either most favorite or most hated card though.

I assumed you’d put Moonlace down with the other laces. It is technically part of the “Lace” cycle, it was printed much later in Time Spiral, but it do what laces do, except the “color” you change your target to becomes colorless.

I am shocked Mercadian Masque's Security Detail, The Dark's Sorrow's Path and Fallen Empire's Delif's Cube didnt make the list... and those are just 3 I can think of on top of my head. There are definitely more there that you can easily make a Part 2 of this one and still be spoiled for choices! For the #3 card, I actually like the design of the card in terms of flavor. The art is also perfect for a Halloween themed video. The posture of the victim speaks so much on how he was desperately trying to get away from the Blade's reach... while we know it was a useless struggle. Imagine if you were that man... its actually pretty disturbing. The #2 card was an overly balanced version of Mirror Universe from Legends I believe? There was a time people were hailing it was a great card... so I see why the Transfer was overly balanced. At least the Mirror could kill the enemy, as far as I know, if you are put in a position where you're at 0 life when you activate the effect I was one of those who was fooled by Common Cause XD Honestly, I thought it buffed all creatures if it shared a color with any other creature in play... so I wouldnt mind if my opponent's creatures get the buff as long as mine did since dealing extra damage to my opponent was worth it And Assembly Hall... "Whoa! Unrestricted search for any creature as long as I have a copy of it already! That looks good" - Me... and hopefully none of you thought of this too -_-

In defense (partial) of the -Laces, color hosing was a big thing in Alpha through Revised. The color pie and tribes weren't as strong (even Merfolk) back [way waaaaay back] then.

I remember using Black Lace and White Lace to hose my opponent when I ran Black Knight and White Knight, but I never played that deck much, so it probably didn't work so well.

Parallax Inhibitor could have just said "Permanents with Fading lose fading" or "Add 10 counters to each permanent with fading" and it still would have been too weak. But sac it for 1 counter is just awful.

I love this list, because I instantly start trying to think about ways to use these bad rares. You actually have pretty descent lace decks in 93/94 and alpha only.

I have a commander deck based entirely around changing colors and having fun with that kind of effect, and the laces STILL aren't good enough for that, and if you can't fit into a 100 card singleton casual deck that synergizes with you perfectly there is pretty much no hope

One with Nothing actually saw play in the sideboard against Owling Mine Decks, decks that got their name from Ebony Owl Netsuke and Howling Mine. Rhystic Studies' video "Magic's Best Worst Card" is where I learned this fact, and it seemed so weird to me but hey, if there's a deck that wins by forcing you to have too many cards in hand, One with Nothing is a relevant card.

Hint of Insanity is perfect against Assembly Hall. Oh, you've just fetched another copy of a card into your hand? BOOM, both of them gone! Also, the Lace cards can combo with Common Cause. You have 3 white creatures, your opponent has one black one. BOOM, you turn it white and actually get the +2/+2 effect for a turn! More seriously, Thoughtlace combines well with Red Elemental Blast. Northstar doesn't seem all that bad. Useless in a lot of decks, and very expensive, but in a deck with a lot of colorless mana ramp, it's useful for casting things with all the colours, like Sliver Queen. Acidic Dagger stands out to me as crazy bad. For 8 mana, you give one creature deathtouch and you have to announce it before they announce defenders. And it doesn't work on walls. Razor Pendulum definitely feels at least reasonable. I'd consider it for burn decks. It does increase the pressure. You attack and can't quite kill them, but bring them down to 4. Well, now they only have two turns left. For 4 mana it does 4 damage, maybe more. It can backfire, but it's not useless.

Thanks, just bought some of those I was unaware existed. North Star has been a favorite since I pulled it from a pack. Not every one is interested in competition. Some people simply enjoy the art on cards.

im think assembly might fit an elves deck. where alot of mana can be generated quickly. tap for mana creatures. but even then is likely better cards than assembly haul to include.

That Common Cause never got errata'd so it actually did something sometimes is honestly surprising. I struggle to believe it wasn't intended to be if all of your creatures share a color and not all creatures on the battlefield.

The designer probably thought it would be a good thing to have on the battlefield after playing a wrath effect. Play some cheap creatures and as long as they're the only ones on the field they get a decent bonus. Or maybe a sideboard against a creatureless deck?...

I think the flavor text hints that it does what is intended. "Mercadia City's troops are at their best when they have no enemy to fight." If you opponent has no creatures, it could be a big finisher for a bunch of creatures on your side. Still bad, but not worth errata-ing.

My biggest feels bad rare that I ever opened was back in 1998 when I opened a Rune of Protection: Lands in an Urza's Saga starter pack. Yes, that's the same set with Gaea's Cradle, Tolarian Academy, Yawgmoth's Will, Time Spiral and Gilded Drake. Getting new magic cards was an event back then, I was only 13 and could only afford that one starter pack and had to wait to go to the city to be able to even get my hands on it because magic was a lot more niche back then and we didn't have an LGS in town

Hint of Insanity could work against Rat decks that use Rat Colony or Relentless Rats. Or a Dragon’s Approach deck 🤷‍♂️. Very niche but playable against those decks.

I think you're severely under-rating the potential of Common Cause. It's perfectly good as a sideboard in a mono-color aggressive deck against a deck with very few and preferably no creatures. This will often allow you to come up with 6 or more damage on board that may be enough to finish the opponent off before they can get their Wrath effect off. I'm not going to say it's amazing, but you're definitely tunneled into the "but the opponent's creatures get pumped too" without realizing the opponent has to have creatures. Lots of decks in Magic's history don't have any.

Yeah, if the opponent has no creatures at all, then +2/+2 to potentially all your creatures is a game changer.

What was the logic behind cards like psychic transfer? Did we ever get some sort of game design diary for that type of thing? It's an expensive card that, by design, does basically nothing, and seems impossible to break either since it's so restrictive did they just have to fill out one more rare slot and run out of time so they made something super safe at the last minute? I know that's how Archangel's Light happened.

Common Cause can be useful. If you run an effect like Ensnaring Bridge, it’s good. It can also be good against a low/no creature deck…and you’re running Boros or infect.

Here's a story of how poorly I understood the importance of multi-lands in 1993 or early 94: A store had one Unlimited starter deck left over from a shipment. The store owner held it for me and I rushed down to pick it up. My three rares were all multi-lands and I groaned like Charlie Brown seeing that. I felt ripped-off. Yeah.... Wish I still had all my old cards.

Common Cause doesn't belong here, especially not over Wood Elemental. It's an efficient anthem effect if your opponent is not playing creatures.

I don't know if the laces are necessarily bad, they're just unplayable. They're a cheap clean version of an effect that currently has no application but who knows, they could one day become playable if that effect ever becomes relevant for whatever reason. In the same way that One With Nothing isn't a bad card, it's actually a good card, super premium version of the effect it does. It's just that there is no situation where that effect is ever useful right now, but there's a world where it combos with something and is broken. A true bad card is one that is just a card that doesn't even do the thing it's trying to do successfully, like Psychic Transfer is horrendous because even if you want a swap effect, it doesn't do the thing you want it to do most of the time, and can't even be used for combos because of the restrictions.

Common cause seems a little too exploitable to be here, especially for the time. A 3 mana anthem that gives +2/+2 is way above rate, a mono white deck at the time would have access to some nice remova, and creatures being worse at the time makes it more likely to run up against creatureless decksl. Obviously not a good card in any way but tenth worst seems harsh

One With Nothing didn't make the list. To be fair, this makes sense for Nizzahon. OWN was used in the sideboard of a couple decks within its own standard as a last-ditch answer to Owling Mine, which was a top deck of that period. That means that OWN has actually seen play at the highest level of competition and is automatically disqualified from this list.

I see the synergy, but "really good" is one hell of an exaggeration. Paying a total 6 mana for this plus waiting an entire turn just to deal the first 3 damage isn't exactly an exciting rate. And with how expensive the cumulative upkeep gets it doesn't become much more attractive either.

I tried to brew around Malignant Growth back in the day. I tried to make it good. It isn't. I was surprised that more red rares didn't make the list. There's some atrocious red rares. North Star is a bad card ..but worst rare? It does do something. That something isn't efficient, but it does something. Common Cause is a blank card.

I’m shocked not to see sorrow’s path or Aysen Highway here. A lot of the cards you picked were situational but both of these are so much worse. I heard the talk about wood elemental actually doing something and I suppose in some circumstances it might but most of the time you’re going to create an x for 1 scenario where x is equal to the number of forests sacrificed

Sorrow's Path has upside in a deck with lots of cards that have triggers when you damage them (like Enrage dinos). Aysen Highway....yeah, it could have been here. Especially because it's symmetrical and you're the only player guaranteed to have Plains.

It seems like the Laces might've been okay as a bad combo with the Elemental Blasts in the very beginning since a card pool of a few hundred doesn't have all that much removal.

If you play the old Shandalar game, you'll curse the laces, as the AI opponents always seem to have them just the moment they can make them work. (also, the meta in that game is crazy).

You are right with it. A two card combo which killed any permanent or spell with interrupt speed (which mattered at that time) was quite a deal. Obviously not good enough for 2024 standards, but okay in 1994/95. And I think it's quite unfair to value cards solely under 2024 circumstances und to ignore the environment they were actually printed in. The laces definitely don't belong on this list.

This might be me being unfamiliar with higher level MtG play, but Hint of Insanity seems like even if it whiffs it's a little useful. Knowledge of your opponent's hand is never a bad thing. With that said, I do imagine it's a bit expensive for that ability on the likely occasion it whiffs.

It isn't a bad thing, but paying 3 mana and using a card to see their hand is overpaying in a massive way. You're going to lose 9 times out of 10 when you do it.
