For me It was deranged hermit who(IMHO) became the best card in urza's legacy at the time.I remember around the time he came out stompy-squirrels with Gaea's Cradle and oath of druids was unstoppable....until mercadian masque came out with the rishadan port, it was game over for Gaea's Cradle ; also for Tolarian Academy which was huge at the time with tinker/artifact decks.

I used Rancor as a card draw ability, in combo with Weatherseed Treefolk, and Greater Good. I played a blue/green deck, so I used elves for mana, played an intruder alarm, drew myself nearly out with the return to hand effects of the treefolk, and rancor, threw out a thoptor squadron, and went infinite mana. Then I used stroke of genius to draw my opponent out. By the time I was done refining the deck, I called it Elfstroke, and I could win 4th turn almost every time I played it.

I was out of Magic from the end of Mirage to the middle of Invasion. Went to play at the local card shop with my ancient deck, and decided to hit up the commons box and spend some pocket change before the game. When I saw Rancor my first thought was "What have you done, WotC?" So that night, a Serra Angel with 3 rancors on her took me to second place against a UW Stasis deck. However, I did lose on turn 3 to an Illusions/Donate combo deck that ran perfectly and combo'd on turn 1. It would have been turn 2, but I payed the upkeep on illusions once and then STP'd my own white knight on turn 3.

I was buying A LOT of MTG during his time (early high school sophomore year) and I went back through my old collection. Ahh, the days of $3.00 magic packs. It looks like I have 3, yes 3 unused (not mint though) grim monoliths.. 😶🤑 Ironically during that time, nobody cared for them. People wanted the Mulanti-Maro Sorcerer, Palinchron and ring of Gix. I also stumbled upon a FOIL Academy Rector from the Urza's Destiny set! 😲🤑
