Friedman could have drawn game 2 with an infinite hostage taker loop, but that woulld have been too dishonorable I guess lol

He cannot do that with judge at his side, because after he demonstrated that he can loop infinitely, he will be requested to proceed the game state. That means either you somehow improve the game state through looping, or stop the loop.

My assumption is based on the rulings for oblivion ring, which has similar text: "If there are no nonland permanents on the battlefield other than an Oblivion Ring, and the card it exiled was another Oblivion Ring, casting a third Oblivion Ring will result in an involuntary infinite loop that will end the game in a draw" There was a moment where Friedman could cast down his own elf, cast hostage taker and both players would have been tapped out, I think

@@bobbio100 Yes but oblivion ring effects have been revamped, so the ruling may have changed? Also I don't think that's legal in competitive magic, comparing to casual they have more rules, playing like that could get him a game loss. Ofc I'm not a judge so what do I know.

@@ArmoredNeko they actually made an errata but only to avoid a one-card infinite loop scryfall.com/card/xln/223/hostage-taker . Seems like the two hostage taker loop still happens if there are no other creatures or artifacts on the battlefield.
