It’s hard to believe that the station I go to in Chicago when I ride my Rock Island Metra was once served by one of the most famous NYC Named Trains: The 20th Century Limited.

I've often considered building another streamlined Hudson when I get older. If I get enough money and Investors, It could work. If the British can build another Peppercorn from Scratch, We can surely build a Hudson from Scratch too. If there was a Hudson that was saved from Scrap and restored, I could have seen it Double Heading with N&W 611. They are both Iconic examples of Streamline.

Ought to take a leaf out of the book of the British and build a new streamlined J3a from scratch like was done with the Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 "Tornado". It'd just be a matter of getting up the money, acquiring a suitable workshop and all the machinery to make the parts (or have companies that can do so build the parts you couldn't make in-house), then putting the thing together. Like Tornado, a new J3a could have small adjustments made to its design to help it fit in with the modern railroad, but still be faithful to the original locomotives. It's time we started building a new steamer of our own, and I have to admit seeing a J3a going like the wind with a passenger train would be a grand sight.

Great job on the review. I am sure the "crew talk" feature must be one of the more controversial points: my personal feeling is that if the "talk" were a bit more authentic, it would be more acceptable. Imagine actually telling the fireman how to do his job down to the last detail? A pair of black eyes for the engineer would probably follow shortly afterwards.

Yes MTH makes shorter drawbars for Proto Sound 3.0 steam locomotives. There are two different sets, they each have three in each. One has drawbars 25, 30, and 45mm lengths (#20-89020), and the other with 30, 35, and 50mm lengths (#20-89021).

Thanks for another great review, Eric. The history portion was right on. MTH does offer a drawbar kit for Proto-Sound 3.0. One is 20-89021 and I believe there is another kit with different drawbar lengths. I am also wondering if there is a difference in the pin arrangement between 2.0 and 3.0. Are they both 6 pin? If you want to see how the Dreyfuss Hudson looked after the shrouds were removed and the pedestal bed tenders were applied check out Sunset Models 3rd Rail's Boneyard section.
