In this video, we dive into the MTHFR C677T genetic mutation and its significant impact on our health and the well-being of our children. We explore how consuming the synthetic form of folic acid can be harmful to our mental and physical health, particularly for those with the MTHFR mutation.
We discussed:
- The link between MTHFR and anxiety, sleep problems and behavioral issues in children
- The connection between MTHFR and mood disorders such as ADHD, schizophrenia
- What types of foods to avoid and what type of supplements to add into your routine for optimal health
Understanding MTHFR can empower us to make healthier choices for ourselves and our families!
HOW TO GET GENETIC LABS DONE:
- My number one go-to would be to find a local Function Medicine Practitioner or Naturopath in your area and request the labs. They will also pull all your nutrient panels etc. This is critical in order to see how your methylation pathways are currently working and whether you’re deficient in many areas.
- If you’re unable to do the above, there are many lab tests available online through different sites. These tend to be pricey but worth it. Usually there is a physician that will review your results with you. Below is one for example: 10xhealthnetwo...

Important Items I didn’t get to mention in the video: - When methylation is impaired, your risk for certain diseases goes up drastically. This can be easily improved with your choices! - Aside from avoiding Folic Acid, make sure to add in lots of dark leafy greens (sprouts are awesome for smoothies specifically broccoli sprouts). You can sneak these into your kids smoothies. - Watch out for nutritional yeasts with folic acid (Dr. Berg has a non fortified version). - When supplementing, make sure the correct B12 is listed, not the synthetic version. Look for methylcobalamin. Folate should be listed as L-methylfolate NOT folic acid. - Another gene mutation that impairs methylation is COMT. I’ll do another video on this eventually. -Of course, avoiding processed food is always the best option! Avoiding glyphosate (buying organic), dyes and sugar will help your kids immensely. Not easy but worth it.

I hope it helps. I was fortunate to have my brother have all the testing. I wish you well.

The form is B12 is important too. It needs to be either Methylcobalamin or Adenosylcobalamin or Hydroxycobalamin. Never Cyanocobalomin which is synthetic & promotes just as many problems in the methylation pathways.

100%! Thank you for noting that. I take methylcobalamin.

I have it from both parents. It is the one that is the least damaging. I recently went off grains.

Good call with the no grains and avoiding folic acid. Unless you buy organic, it’s hard to avoid! I am usually gluten free but testing out grain free right now also

Would you recommend supplementing with methyl folate and b12 if you get the RDA in your diet?

Thanks for tuning in! I like to view supplements as “topping off” the good diet you already have in place. I would add some in 👍

Active form of folate is most overrated suplement in case of methylation and i will explain you why. Your body converts folate to different forms like dhf, thf and mthf all day long and suplement that you take will be converted back to this other forms really quickly and then it again needs to be converted using mthfr enzyme so it wont save you, if you ask then what can i do do actually improve my health without mega dosing folate which wont do you anything good in long term then i will tell you that you need to do 2 things, first of all make sure that you have good b2 status becaue this vitamin speeds up mthfr enzyme and second of all suplement with creatine which will lower your body demand for methylation which will lower homocysteine production and by that lower your demand for methylfolate and also betaine.
