She really was. As a child watching MTM I never understood why Mary was always considered the pretty one. Not that she wasn't attractive, just that Valerie was REALLY beautiful. I understand now that Valerie was hired to play a certain part to Mary as the leading lady, and, of course, beauty really isn't just about physical attributes, but Valerie was drop dead gorgeous.

Rhoda was a very good comedy becoming a big ratings hit early on. Then, imho, the producers/writers shot themselves in the foot and made some huge mistakes with the show :- 1. Marrying Rhoda off to Joe so fast into the first season. Should have kept her totally single & dating for the first 3 seasons then let her meet Joe in the 4th season, they date exclusively in the 5th and they get married in the 6th. 2. They make Rhoda & Joe divorce and get everyone in America to hate Joe because they made him into a total jerk in the 3rd season. 3. After they made Joe disappear , they had another chance with Johnny Venture. They should made his character a serious regular as he was hilarious and had great chemistry with Rhoda.
@elle53742 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. Once they married Rhoda off to Joe. The show wasn't quite the same for me. I still watch it , but skip the episodes with Joe. An Johnny Venture was great , they should have kept him on the show. But I at least get to watch re-runs.

Johnny Venture and Nick Lobo - two very similar characters, and they found ways to integrate them both into the show. They were weirdos, no doubt about it... I do like the ending of this one though - Rhoda isn't going to bed with him, and she retains her dignity.
@AnnusMirabilus2 жыл бұрын
It's the same level of arrogance-- but Johnny was successful, and Nick is a perpetual loser. It's an interesting dynamic.
@BenjiOrthopedic2 жыл бұрын
@@AnnusMirabilus I don't think anyone else has probably ever mentioned that but maybe it's true. I would have to guess that it was not the intention of the writers either. It's too bad that "Rhoda" was not recognized much. I think it was even better than the MTM Show overall. I really can't think of many "bad" Rhoda episodes. They were all pretty consistent. People said that marrying Rhoda off proved to be a mistake. It wasn't. Granted, Joe was a hothead who had a weakness for sluts (his first wife was kinda one!) but although their marriage failed, it was a good plot point for Rhoda herself. She had to have that marital period before she could really go back to being successfully single and independent again. And then...we don't see her for another 22 years until the TV movie!
