Note: Muang can mean a city, capital or center city which was the center of government, city-state, kingdom, depending on what the context is.
When King Hansa Warman the third, who was reigning over the Khom Empire and the second son of King Surya Warman the first, passed away in 1080 AD or Buddhist Era of 1623, a power struggle within the royal court in Muang Yaso Taara Pura, the capital of the Khom Empire, occurred.
King Chai Ya Warman the sixth along with Siam troops from City-State of Phimai went down there to suppress his political rivals. Once his political rivals had been already suppressed, King Chai Ya Warman the sixth was crowned as King of the Khom Empire ascending the throne in Muang Yaso Taara Pura.
The Siam troops from City-State of Phimai Mai that had come along with King Chai Ya Warman the sixth continued serving as military officials of Muang Yaso Taara Pura. When the capital of the Khom Empire was moved from Muang Yaso Taara Pura to Muang Praa Nakhon, the Siam troops from City-State of Phimai transitioned to become military officials of Muang Praa Nakhon.
Afterwards, people from Muang Phimai and other cities under City-State of Phimai were very likely to be increasingly moving to Muang Praa Nakhon, both to make a living and to serve as military officials in Muang Praa Nakhon when they realized that the Khom Empire of Praa Nakhon had become continually more powerful, and prosperous. Such a situation made the existence of Siam ordinary people and Siam military officials in Muang Praa Nakhon very much increasing.
Prasat Hin Phimai was an ancient Khom stone castle, first built around the 16th Buddhist century during the reign of King Surya Warman the first who was the southern Shyam or Siam king of the Sailendra dynasty of Sri Wi Chai federation, but his mother was a royal descendant of a king of the Khom Empire who was the northeastern Shyam or Siam king, thus, he claimed that he had rightful succession to the throne of the Khom Empire through his mother.
It can be noticed that royal descendants of Shyam or Siam kings reigning over the central, northeastern, and southern parts of present-day Thailand had intermarried with each other since ancient times. They were relatives, but there were power struggles among the relatives many times.
Prasat Hin Phimai was later rebuilt by King Chai Ya Warman the sixth and other kings of “Mahi Taara Pura” dynasty, who were the northeastern Shyam or Siam kings, in the 17th Buddhist century.
King Chai Ya Warman the sixth, the first king of “Mahi Taara Pura” dynasty, originated from City-State of Phimai, and later succeeded in struggling for the throne of the Khom Empire in Muang Yaso Taara Pura in Buddhist Era of 1623, thus, he deliberately constructed Prasat Hin Phimai to be used as the center of government of the whole Khom Empire, resulting in Muang Phimai being the main capital and Muang Yaso Taara Pura being the secondary capital of the Khom Empire. For convenience of travelling the dual capital, he constructed Prasat Hin Pee Mai’s frontage facing south towards Muang Yaso Taara Pura and constructed a road connecting the dual capital.
Alongside the road between Muang Phimai and Muang Yaso Taara Pura, Aro Kaya Sala, which was similar to a small hospital with traditionally medical personnel and herbal remedies, and the accommodations for travelers at each of 17 breakpoints were constructed in the reign of King Chai Ya Warman the seventh who was a great-grandson of King Chai Ya Warman the sixth.
