Muay Nam is the Muay Boran style I'm developing. It was born by applying the principles of Jeet Kune Do to a mix of many Muay Boran styles, which have been refined in a modern and practical way, with the influence of many combat sports and martial arts from all around the world (Old British Bare Knuckle Boxing, Lethwei, Taekwondo, Boxing, Wushu, MMA, various ancient and contemporary Wrestling styles).

Another big difference is that Muay Thai pros have better skills in boxing due to the influence of western boxing, especially the Muay Mat specialists (e.g. Samson Isaan and Veerapol Sahaprom). Some of them actually transitioned to professional boxing and won titles there such as Samart Payakaroon and Somrak Khamsing. Source site:

@@combatsportsarchive7632 Western boxing was officially introduced in Thailand in 1913 and by 1919 it was taught together with Muay Thai. At the time Muay Boran was still used since gloves were introduced in 1928 so it was influenced by western boxing and incorporated its punches and tactics. But you are right because there are no Muay Boran fights or competitions so Muay Thai fighters develop a lot better. Surely it also something that depends on the individual fighters but most Muay Boran practitioners never competed at high level, and the Muay Thai fighters you mentioned are the best of the best.

@@GaawutProductions Right, the Thais imported western boxing during that timeline. Even the ring was adopted for experiment. However, there were Muay Thai legends who incorporated Muay Boran's stuff into their professional fights in Thailand such as Somrak Khamsing and Samart Payakaroon. I checked out their highlight footages. Their fighting style looked somewhat distinct from standard Muay Thai since they learned those from knowledgeable instructors who learned the real stuff from past masters like Kru Yodtong Senanan. So they at least tested some of the old methods effectively in the ring. If I run a Muay Boran group, I'd encourage them to adopt a freestyle format like Kudo's format so that they can practice both the striking methods and grappling techniques without the restriction of boxing gloves. Kudo's format is like MMA's format except they wear a special type of helmets that allows fighters to throw headbutts and elbow strikes at each other constantly. They can also use throwing techniques with small gloves like Judo there. If you wanna see a video example of Kudo's format, type "Daido Juku Kudo" on the search box to find some.

I never knew how much diversity was in Muay Boran, Its kind of just an umbrella term for many different styles that cover everything, kind of like kung fu as the umbrella term for Chinese martial arts. Both are almost like MMA before MMA, they cover ground kicking clinching throwing sweeping trapping boxing etc. with certain systems specializing or focusing on certain areas. Its truly a wonderful and rich tradition, thanks for enlightening me

Actually...it isn't just Muay Boran that is similar to MMA. Kung-Fu and Okinawan Karate was also the same. Kung-Fu is actually 90% grappling when the BS is out of the equation. And old Okinawan Karate is less strikes, and moreso on grappling and throws with a mix of strikes. It seems modern martial arts shows more of one category than the old school of being well-rounded.

Define ''traditional''. Wrestling has been a ''battlefield art'' for centuries as one needs to know how to defend themselves off the ground or find a gap in the enemy armor to stab them. That being said, i dont think most of these battlefield arts worked very well on actual battlefield where formation fighting was preffered. I would argue that these were more of an elite special ops of the old trades... spy's and what not.

@@rockmcdwayne1710 That's actually factually incorrect look at the Martial Arts Americans used in before the end of WW2. Had a lot of old Style Brutal Wrestling Mixed with Boxing with no ruled Handicaps. That shit was way better then the Wrestling they teach today. They would teach you skills like how to smash someones head while in a clench or under arm hold. How to drop them down into a position to stomp their head in etc. Most people don't want to admit it but sports watered down the Best Arts. Judo is a perfect example it lost over 80 percent of it's most effective techniques for a real life or death fight. Since a majority of them ended with the back of the head hitting the ground while being slammed at the same time. The Ippon Seoi or Over the Shoulder Throw the most bread and butter technique for a instant knockout has been watered down the modern version doesn't follow through. The original if done correctly would probably end with a person skull being cracked on the pavement so bad no matter how tough they are there is no way they would be able to get up again. And would probably need serious medical attention immediately. And it especially shows as even the Modern Greco Roman Wrestling which is heavily Watered Down bodies most Grappling Arts through aggressive tactics alone. Now imagine if it had the full arsenal from it's inception before they were lost to time.

There's a lot of individual differences between Muay Thai and Boran, but we can say generally they're differ to each other due to his propose. Thai is for competition sake and Boran is to war propose. A lot of people missjugde it thinking that Boran is stronger than Thai cause it was made for war, but that is not the truth. Boran is made to figth against multiple enemies so the focus is diffused, it's more all-round, have some wrestling skills and is a Co-op art, since in an army, you barely see a 1vs1 combat, so taking low guard enemies down, attacking the back and that sort of thing is the goal during a war. Thai in the other side, is focused on 1vs1 strategy, the figther is more oriented to pay attention only in opponent in your face, you pay attention with his kicks, head movement and all, you're generally will be aiming for a counter. You don't need to kill, or KO you opponent to win, so you can focus more in defense and volume strikes like jabs,low kicks and etc. Just like traditional jiu-jitsu vs Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ is for competition sake, so different from war jiu-jitsu, we have a plenty of chains and groundwork, transitions, locks and etc, things that are impossible to do during a war, since a enemy can just stab your back while you're are rolling whit each other in the ground.

Wushu Sanshou has 3 variants for each purpose respectively: Military Sanshou focuses to incapacitating opponents quickly, which will disable their combat abilities for a long time, even permernantly. Deadly strikes can take life as well. Civillian Sanshou aimed to help non-law enforcers to defend themselves at will that will guarantee their safety while limit them from applying fatal assault to the offenders and void most legal troubles to the victims. Sport Sanshou are considered combat sport for competition. They're solely 1v1 matches with headgears, soft body armors, boxing-similar gloves and shin guards. There are hardly serious injuries when sparring as everyday training. So yeah, basically similar.

Yes there are many cases of fights to the death for example the gladiator fights in ancient Rome or medieval sword duels but just like today those had to be sanctioned by authorities in power at the time, people couldn't just decide on their own to do those things, there had to be a mutual agreement between the two fighters and a judge or lawman had to be involved to make sure that everything was fair, u can find many historical documents that prove that....and dude.....if u think u can't kill someone with modern Muay Thai....u haven't been paying attention to enough modern competition fights long enough, people have died in modern competitive fights many times and even in street fights where both parties involved didn't have any martial arts training , how about you let a Muay Thai fighter kick you full force in the head where your temple is located, knock you down onto a concrete pavement where your head bounces off and cracks your skull....and let me know whether you'll walk away undamaged and totally fine...I'll wait Comments like yours just make me wonder if you have any knowledge of actual fighting or of you've ever experienced an actual fight before whether in a ring or at school, a bar or club or whatever, it's not as pretty and beautiful as it looks in the movies you know

@@alexpopa98 Agreed that Aikido wouldn't beat BJJ. But BJJ didn't pop up out of thin air. It utilized more methods than just traditional jiujistu. So, BJJ isn't in the same category as Aikido, Muay Thai, or Wing Chun, which I spoke of. And I never mentioned mixed martial arts in my argument, which BJJ is. So if you're gonna bring up BJJ, then we can bring up how Khabib utilized his Sambo in his MMA career. If we were to argue then, my argument would still be valid and yours wouldn't. Because, again, it wouldn't be about one MMA form's superiority to another (Sambo v. BJJ), rather the practitioner's expertise.

@@alexpopa98 You must be either confused or terrible at English. Although, I explained myself clearly previously, I will do you a favour and make it even simpler to your understanding. BJJ is not a traditional martial art like Aikido. Neither is Sambo. Both, Sambo and BJJ have had a history of constantly evolving utilizing different martial arts technique into their own. Therefore these two should be seen as mma, not traditional. Aikido, Muay Thai, and Wing Chun have not evolved into mma, because they only remain traditional and have not taken other martial arts method into their own. Therefore BJJ and Sambo should be a proper comparison as both are mma; not Aikido and BJJ. As per whatever else you have wasted your time in trying to explain, I have 0 interest in tackling because your arguments do piss-poor job at articulating my arguments. So I will conclude once again that it's not about the art but practitioner. Hopefully this helps. Edit: Please do try to understand that categorizing here is important: grapple with grapple, mma with mma, striking with striking, and traditional with traditional. The entire argument began on these basis when I argued with another person here, who has now left.

Muay Boran is basically like kung fu. What's great is that by having a combat sport associated with it, (muay thai), you can develop all the attributes needed to make muay boran work. I often see kung fu or other traditional arts where , their approach is better than combat sports for real self defense, but I can also see the people demonstrating them wouldn't be able to use them. In that case you would be better off just taking a seasoned mma fighter and teaching him kung fu for a year, and he would be better at self defense than both kung fu practitioners and other mma fighters, even if he is now slightly worse at mma. I think something similar with muay boran. If you get a nice foundation in muay thai and train some wrestling, you could move on to muay boran and krabi krabong and be good at self defense.

Thai Langauge 101 Boran (โบราณ) = Ancient/Oldschool/In the past MuayBoran is not a name of martial art. It just a description that martial art(muay) is in the past. There's a lot of fighting style back in the days like Chaiya fighting style or Tasao fighting style ETC. Oh If you visit Thailand don't forget to order a drink 'CoffeeBoran' the old style brew coffee,. It has a good taste and smell. You'll love it believe me 😉

Muay Thai and Ancient Muay Thai are very dangerous. I'm Thai and I'm glad to study. My boxing teacher taught me a lot of techniques. But when he teaches Muay Thai, I really like it because it's charming. It's dangerous at the same time. As far as I know, there is no such "point" system in professional MT fights in Thailand. Like, the first two rounds both fighters get 10/10 unless there is a knockdown (10/8), or one of them is clearly dominating (10/9). Also judges make notes about who was better. The next 3 rounds fighter who dominates does not lose points, i. e. usually score is the same 10/9 or 10/8 for knockdowns. In case of 10/10 judges remember who was better in the first 2 rounds. That is, 50/47 is a usual score. At least, that's what I've been told.

@GaawutProductions
@GaawutProductions Жыл бұрын
If you are a total beginner I would recommend you to get into a gym first; you can study Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Sanda or MMA at the gym and implement Muay Boran techniques at home or during free training. If you already have the basics (stance, footwork, strikes with at least the 8 weapons, defenses) then you can learn MB at home from videos; I'm uploading on my channel a free course on the basics of my Muay Boran style, Muay Nam, you can use it as a reference for your Muay Boran training. I also offer an online course and a book that you can buy. In theory, you can learn Muay Boran at home from 0 with proper training and tutorials, but if you get something wrong it will take more time to correct it than to learn it from 0. Don't be discouraged by the lack of gyms, when I was a beginner I started Muay Boran at home because the Muay Boran gym near my home was closed that month. Since at the time there was not a lot of content on Muay Boran I rigorously tried to mimic the techniques I saw in the videos. When I started training at the Muay Boran gym I was complimented because I already had a sort of base and that made me catch up faster, so what I did solo was useful, although I had to correct a few things, for example, my stance was too bladed (like the Chaiya one) and a more frontal one should be used instead. Things are different now since I'm making sure to give the best tutorials possible to help those who don't have an MB gym near home. In short; If you don't have a Muay Boran gym near home I recommend you to study from my channel and courses, while training in Muay Thai/Sanda/Kickboxing/MMA/Kudo. And for the wrestling area, I recommend Judo/Sambo/Jiu-jitsu/American Wrestling. If you can't get into a gym right now then do your best with the resources you have, just never give up and always work properly on it 🙏

Originally Muay Boran and Krabi Krabong were a single art that later split around the 17th century. Pure wrestling disappeared around the 19th century, however, its repertoire can still be found scattered around the various Muay Boran styles. Muay Boran of the past had the same rules as Pankration and the Indian Malla-Yuddha, these arts have a lot of similarities in both wrestling and striking; we can say that there was a universal martial art in ancient times which was practiced all around the world, with few differences depending on the local culture.
