It's hard to find a gym that has an instructor who understands fighting mechanics as well as this. Fair play he knows his stuff. You can see how much attention he takes in mastering the art. It's all chess!

i've watched literally hundreds of muay thai tutorials on youtube, and paul (as well as damien trainor) have the cleanest technique of any of the fighters/coaches i've watch thus far. plus, paul's accent is amazing. him explaining creeping into southpaw to land the high kick off a dropped hand after the jab makes me laugh too hard.

This is very helpful. makes me realise how lucky I am to have one-on-one training, and do a lot of sparring with my instructor. if I start to make a mistake (like dropping the right hand in guard) I get one warning - if I make the same mistake again I get slapped (if he's holding pads)or hit. Love the tips on not telegraphing switch kick, I'll try that tomorrow - I give too much away and generally get a hard teep to keep me away!

+scanjet1000 how good are you after six months? Im just wondering if it's a quick to learn martial art.
@scanjet1000
@scanjet1000 8 жыл бұрын
Leopold Berger I would say muay thai is definitely a fast one to learn. The first three month your skills increase a ton. And again after you start getting used to everything. My gym only has two classes a week muay thai but Im getting better at knowing what to in each situation. I guess it's different for every person but im learning muay thai faster than i learnt BJJ (grappling). Hope that helped :P
@leopoldberger9037
@leopoldberger9037 8 жыл бұрын
+scanjet1000 thanks man, it's cause I'm thinking of starting Muay Thai and i'm kinda "researching" about it to see what it's all about. Are the classes "violent" in general; I'm trying to convince my mum that her baby is not going to die or come back with loads of bruises. I'm not scared of receiving hits, it's not my first martial art so yeah, thanks though.
@scanjet1000
@scanjet1000 8 жыл бұрын
Leopold Berger Its as tough as you make it. Muay thai is defiantly a great art to learn. If you compete, then yes your going to hurt, i doubt you'l die but you will bruise. As far as just normal classes goes there hardly any risk. During a average class you practice, techniques such as kicks, punches... etc on pads which your partner will hold. You will not be forced to spar, but if you want to as long as your with someone experienced you will not get hurt. Pretty much light sparring is easy you won't get hurt. More advanced people can go a little harder but sparring is to improve your skill not trying to beat your friends up. :P I would atleast try to convince your mom to let you try it out for a month and if its too violent then quit. Its really a lot of a fun,

A good reminder for most Muay Thai practitioners and even fighters! I would call these 'common mistakes' 'trade-offs' because some big names in Muay Thai do punch and kick in such a way. I guess they do so to generate the greatest power, to cover the longest range and to maintain better balance in punching & kicking, at the expense of better protection. Bear in mind that their strikes are launched within a fraction of a second and their opponents are probably suffering great stress & pain under attack. As a result, effective counterattack is less likely. Anyway those who dare to do so are either top players or foolhardy guys.

JAMES WU As with anything, any attack can be defended or countered. It just boils down to being aware of the possible risks when engaging in different attacks as demonstrated here by Paul. Glad you liked it!

I have noticed that even the highest level fighters drop the back hand when they throw a lead, especially when they are striking at a distant target. This tendency seems to be an artifact of the turning and extension of the lead shoulder. It is as if you cannot help yourself.
