My very first deal was because I invested $2,500.00 on a song. I brought in 4 male singers to record the demo. The artist needed a B side to the A side 12" (Def jam CBS). The Artist loved the song. Played it for Russell Simmons. Russ love it too. On a NY Winter Blizzard in February of 86. We met with Rick Rubin and Russell to talk about the song n the song budget. Rick Rubin ask me do you have other songs, enough for a full album. And how much would it cost to complete the album. I replied yes and told them. Rick& Russ step away to talk... 10 minutes later they said go make a album. The Def Jam artist wasn't a great singer.. the guys who demo the song all 4 can sing!! ALA the Temptations. But my B side became the single when it was about 30 with a bullet on Billboard. Russell called me in the studio. Vinny we need you to do a remix on one of my other songs. A Radio jock in DC played n his switch board lit up! The song sold a million+ the album eventually went Gold. If it wasn't for Rick saying do a Album. My song that they never heard yet. Wouldn't have been nominated for a Grammy.

I would never buy an album based on one song unless it's the biggest hit song of the year

That's totally understandable Charles! It's always nice to know that an album has more great tracks before making a purchase. Sometimes, the biggest hit can give us a glimpse of the artist's style, but there's often so much more to discover in their other songs. What’s your favorite hit song of the past year in 2024?

PS back in the late 80'$ musicians drums, bass, guitar&keys we had to play live.. today we can make music in our bedroom. That's why demo's was so expensive.

Song Artist are truly one of artist, but other could be a young EWF. It's what your gut tells you as a producer. When I was a young adult I paid to see great artist. Took my girlfriend with me. Maybe tickets was $50_$100_$150.. today ticket prices are nuts. Kids, parents can't afford them. I paid for music when I was young, I pay for music now. If a film come out that I wanna see, could be the cast of a director who work I like ALA Quentin Tarantino. I going to support great art. I don't care if it's someone successful or a local band from Long Island. MUBU TV THANKS 4 GREAT CONTENT 2025
