Our Legacy kick continues this week! Last week during our Instant Deck Techs, our budget-friendly Legacy option Turbo Depths came out on top, so we're heading back to Legacy today to see if we can win some games by making a 20/20 creature as early as Turn 2! The deck is basically an all-in combo deck, with every single card in our main deck being part of our Dark Depths combo, a way to find combo pieces, or a way to protect our combo from our opponent's disruption. Is going all-in on the combo of Dark Depths, Vampire Hexmage, and Thespian's Stage a legitimate budget plan for Legacy? Let's get to the video and find out!

Man, Saffron. If you know they're holding a Force at 24:00, DON'T Depths Hexmage, some other land into Hexmage makes them question their sanity in Forcing it, and maybe they let it through, then you uncounterably make Marit Lage the next turn.

Back when I only played kitchen table magic, I had a mono-nlack deck built from original zendikar, and 2 of the guys in my play group were much more experienced and gave me 2 Dark Depths to add to my deck. I then quickly saw the value of having a single spell that could retrieve both of my pieces to my combo if it was ever disrupted. The joy of: making Marit Lage, seeing my opponent scramble to answer it, then spend 2 mana to retrieve the 2 pieces and 2 more mana to replay the hexmage and then landdrop depths just so I can make it again, and seeing the hope drain from their face

If you'd like some advice, I'd rethink the way you sideboard. Bringing in sphere of resist against anything other than combo is a no-go, and not just for the reason that you lost a game because of your own sphere. Where modern is a format where sideboard strategies are based on hopes and prayers, legacy has legit card selection and broad hate cards, plus your deck runs a lot of hate cards mainboard like pithing needle which are relevant in many matchups. A lot of times when you see someone running a narrow sideboard card (like massacre, for instance), it's because their sideboard and general hate cards already provide a lot of coverage and the few decks that narrow cards cover are prominent in a more stratified meta than modern Legacy is a format where most threats are absolute bombs. You should sideboard to win, not using hate cards that have pretty soft effects against your opponent's deck.

You activate thespian’s stage to copy dark depths, get legend ruled, keeping the stage as it has no ice counters on it. Then, the now dark depths sees it has no ice counters, so you sac it to get the marit lage

Yeah, that's part of the problem with Legacy. Some places have a really good scene, other places you can hardly find a game.

You talk about how the llanowar wastes were your downfall for them being budget but there is a reason they run them and even why no basic forest are in the deck. A card that is not so prominent now but used to be present is submerge so many depths decks don’t run forests because of it. I personally avoid forests by using cards like pendelhaven and Okina.
