A lot of people would make this mistake. Me included. I’m glad Matt mentioned stay on the other side of the reed line because the area he sank did look cracked and hard. Very deceptive. Learned something from this video today and from this guy’s mistake. Also about how new cars behave in the sand like the Subaru.

@@desertrat1357 really dumb take. Modern cars are way more reliable. There are plenty of great innovations happening but also plenty of bad ones. This has always been true, you can go to any decade and find plenty of horrible "new technology" that people claimed ruined cars. But the fact remains that a modern car will easily reach 300k miles with basic maintenance/warranty repairs. You aren't getting that with a car made before 2005, especially if you rough it up. The main issue with traction control systems is people don't know how to use them, when to use them, how to disable them, etc and a lot of folks are taking cars to places they shouldn't go(which isn't a modern problem).

Reminds me of when my short bed stepside GMC got stuck in silt just a wee bit too far down a boat ramp in a river very near the Atlantic. Flood tide was due to begin shortly, water was almost up to the top of the tailgate & just getting near the bottom of the front bumper. It must’ve been a really slow day in Kittery, I think every peace officer in town came to see the show. The tow driver told me he could pull me out for 50 bucks, or 250 if he had to get on his hands and knees and hook up to the plow frame. I gladly crawled and got soaked up to my armpits and I thought that was pretty fair!

The Subaru traction system can handle certain types of sand. I've tooled around in my crosstrek in the sand hills of Nebraska and never had an issue and there's several spots with big mounds of loose sand. That stuff you got down in Utah is another matter entirely, it's crazy how completely it confuses the computer. Maybe companies should start doing test drives down there to figure it out.

Momentum is key with Subaru's, especially the NA powered ones or models with CVT's. I use my 2017 Ford Escape to soft road with, and it has no aftermarket support. It's saving grace is that the traction control is either full on or full off. If I turn TCS off, it will spin the tires seemingly until it kills itself. That combined with the solid torque from the 2.0 Ecoboost has gotten me through some pretty sketchy stuff 😂😂

There is no standard or uniform method to do that. Some carmakers support what you are describing, others disable stability control on holding it, my BMW allows to switch off everything somewhere deep down the menu on the screen, some do not offer that at all. True words from Matt about the new car issue that Subaru was facing. I prefer the way my 09 does it. Press the traction control off button, floor it, dump the clutch, and off you go with the engine screaming and sand/mud/snow flying from all 4 tires. Sometimes all the fancy tech falls short of just giving it full beans when you need to. Great video as always!

On my Subaru sti you have to press and hold the traction control button down for a few seconds to completely turn off TC. If you just press it, it goes to track mode and lessens the ability of the TC but will still stop you from spinning the wheels.

Modern vehicles with all the nanny state electronic computerized safety systems have absolutely no place off road. Where I live in British Columbia we don’t have much sand but we have lots of steep mountainous rocky, snowy muddy terrain ,playing in sand is a very different game. That's the one single terrain that I have never seen someone get out of by themselves. Even if you have the gnarliest boggers money can buy, there's no way to get any traction because there is zero friction within the silt and "mud". You'll have a better chance getting up a 40 degree slope of pure black ice than getting out of this stuff.
