It's sealed until it fires, then stuff will inevitably end up falling into the action. The AR15's ace up its sleeves is that all that gas people complain about actually help to keep stuff from falling into the action when it cycles. This is why piston ARs fail this test.

This is probably one of the reasons that Malaysia stopped using the AUG as a standard rifle after less than 20 years in service (apart from the other issues including quality control and the fact that basic training use M16A1s; and the battery of arms transfer better to the M4A1, obviously). And it's really muddy in Southeast Asia in general when the monsoon season comes in. Not great when you are a defense force whose nation has jungles and lots of them.
@mightywoll3
@mightywoll3 4 жыл бұрын
At what prices are they procuring their AR variants though? Between upgrading AUG A1's and buying new M4A1's for a low price(and probably some other politics involved), obviously the latter is the better long term solution. And while this is a sorta weakness of the design, even falling down in swamp areas doesnt put mud in it like in the test, especially as most people are right handed. Its also good to remember the AK test, if we take it as a 100% test of reliability, everyone shouldve scrapped their AK's 50 years ago. Edit: Seems like apparently the AUG's were manufactured locally but there was a rift sometime in the early 2000's regarding licensing and theyve gotten a license from colt in 2006 to produce M4A1's, however that also means that QC issues are on SMEO.

Sometimes it makes problems (appear) worse if one is unfamiliar with a design. My take on the situation. The Steyr AUG's main problems with very thick mud on the rifle is: 1) the charging handl, because of it's open design, grit will stop the handl itself in the front, mud can interfere with the rod when it comes forward in the closing circle. 2) the ejection port faces ~ 45° upwards, so when the rifle tries to eject, brass collides with mud that now is gravity fed into the port.
@chitoryu12
@chitoryu12 4 жыл бұрын
This is not unlike a problem they had with the Tavor. Because of the nature of a bullpup design, you need lots of linkages that connect controls near your hands to the operating system near your face. If mud falls into those places and jams their operation, there's nothing you can do except a full tear-down.
@TheFyrePhoenix
@TheFyrePhoenix 4 жыл бұрын
"Unfamiliar with a design" lmao, someone doesn't know who Karl and Ian are. Karl shot the F2000 for competition for several years and is entirely familiar with the bullpup design. Don't mistake his warranted annoyances with the design to be unfamiliarity. Ian has disassembled more bullpup and unique firearms than you have ever shot and also owns and runs one of the few FAMAS rifles in the US. Both have previously handled and shot AUGs on this channel. Ian has disassembled one or two on Forgotten Weapons.

Couple of points: Pushing the retaining bolt / sling swivel in the stock assembly in a few mil allows you to remove the butt plate to access the cleaning kit. No need to remove it all the way unless you wish to remove the trigger group. Pushing the housing lock to the open postion will allow you to draw the barrel and housing out together. After initial IA drills removing the barrel and housing together gave you a quicker method to check functions and just as quick to assemble when needed. Once you hear that gritty sound when cocking and letting the action foward you are guaranteed to get stoppages. Another issue with the Steyr Aug was lads not allowing the bolt go forward under its own return spring power which can cause malfunctions. It needs to slam into battery.

It seems like anyone wanting to make a new gun design, IF they care about this bit of fairly unlikely happening, should have a dust cover for the ejection port, and the charging handle should be something like the AR where it is basically internal, save for something to grasp it by until you go to charge it. @@Asghaad For a rifle that uses a last round hold open feature the placement of the charging handle to limit the ingress of dirt and debris is advantageous over a configuration based purely on ergonomics. Someone expecting an engagement would have charged his weapon prior to (maybe days before) entering a hot zone, all subsequent bolt manipulation is done using the bolt catch/release (typically). The Israeli Galil with sliding spring loaded dust cover is an excellent compromise as long as the cover continues to function. Considering how little it is actually needed, which would you rather have? I said it in the other video... While the AR charging handle position can be awkward at times, it's design helps prevent gunk from getting into the rifle. Side charging rifles have to have a slot somewhere in the receiver for it to ride in, and that slot will allow gunk into the rifle at a critical area. There are ways to mitigate the issue, but it will always exist to some degree. The AR CH fits into a small opening, that stays plugged at all times for the most part. It would be hard for it to be a significant ingress point for external debris.

Ah! The "Tupperware" rifle! I spent some years "maintaining" these. The initial instructions in these parts referred to "oiling" various parts, including the hammer pack. NOT a good idea! Oil plus dust equals grinding paste. Bad enough on steel components, brutal on injection-moulded polymers. GRAPHITE (or Moly) powder is your friend.. The total lack of primary-extraction leverage like the HK goodies always irked me a little, but it was less of a problem than the wear on the die-cast housing caused by the steel cocking handle base riding along the rather scanty "tracks" in the alloy housing. Another "water-related" issue was the return springs in the two tube"s attached to the carrier. These were initially lubed with "special" grease. However, when the rifles went for a swim, water got in and was a "problem", even with a lot of "pumping of the action to get it out. Eventually, new springs with a "dry-lube" coating were supplied and the entire fleet was eventually changed over.

I cleaned enough sand out of my gear in 2007 to make a nice sandbox for my kids to play in there was so much sand. After that I was stationed in Schweinfurt and later Grafenwoehr Germany. Do you know what they have in some places there? Sand. Some soil is rocky, some is sandy, some is straight up clay. Then there was Iraq, that sucked. And after I got out of the Army I moved back to Kansas. Did you know KS was in prehistoric times covered by water? Guess what, there's sand everywhere! I've patrolled and shot in the rain and laid on the embankment of a muddy hill that was mostly river silt and sand and walked away with a rifle caked in goopy brown shit that took a day to clean out, but it continued to fire because the major moving parts are contained in a more or less sealed container. The way to clear that is 1) pull the mag and use it to belt the stovepiped case out of the ejection port. 2) If that doesn't clear it, pull back on the receiver and push the body locking latch across and pull the whole receiver and barrel out as a unit. At that point it will definitely have cleared the jammed case and you just need to wash it and put it back together. Pulling the trigger mech isn't going to help and for a stoppage like that pulling the barrel isn't much use. Stovepipe stoppages were super common when firing blanks so we got real good at clearing them quickly. The bottom plate of the magazine was the best thing to hit them with.

During my time at the Army I really liked it, but then again I had no clue about firearms back then. Since I got into AR15s I prefer the conventional and more simple design as opposed to the bullpup style. But I guess that´s mostly a matter of personal taste.
