We test the common and ubiquitous Glock 19 in our infamous mud and filth.
How will the "most reliable handgun ever" do in those conditions?
Let's find out.

EisenKreig I would think it would do better because it doesn't have a need to have a locking mechanism. In addition the tight fit between the gas rings and the sleeve should also minimize ingress of debris.

So, to summerize. A Glock is worse than a Hi-Point. A Hi-Point is worse than a spanish 1911. And an original WWI Luger runs circles around all of them.

Dont judge a gun based on the test on the most unreliable condition ever. We knew that Glock performs less than the Hi Point in this test, yet we can all agree that the Glock beats the hi point when we just took it in the gun range. I mean, is there any chance that we will get drowned in a 6 ft deep mudhole then come out to shoot enemies?

I think the glock has the same issue as the AK, it's open to the elements and has somewhat loose tolerances. It will fire longer without being cleaned than a pistol that is more sealed up but when completely submerged in mud the more open design lets the mud in and it jams.

I have to sell all my Glocks now! In all seriousness while these videos are entertaining and we can learn something from them, people put way too much stock in them. I find this is often because for some they confirm a pre-existing bias. I remember after MAC's VP9 test that my lgs had a rush of trade ins for that pistol. Test your pistol and make sure it is reliable for your purposes, but understand no design is immune from the environment.

Joshua B you're describing a more formalized process than is seen here. Also when adopting a weapon system not only one sample is used for testing nor does it only involve one environment. I didn't say these tests have no merit. My argument is that people take these results as Gospel. I don't envision many locked breech tilting barrel firearms doing particularly well in this test. I'm also realistic in that the vast majority of people using pistols on the civilian side of things aren't overly likely to fall into a pit of such mud that the pistol encounters full immersion. It would be great to have a pistol that can function perfectly through that, but it's not something I'm going to encounter personally. Now for militaries I can understand but that is not the majority of the gun buying public.

I agree. I actually found a small sect of Tubers that hate MAC so much because of the VP9 vids. They can't accept that their favorite HK pistol failed. All guns will fail if garbage gets into their main parts. I can accept some of my favorite pistols will fail these tests, Steyr L9 for example, but why cant they?

I had someone the other day on TFB arguing with me that the slide and striker assembly on the SIG P320 doesn't need to be field serviceable at all and I think that's absolute nonsense. I've had a couple of guys show up at the range who had *previously* dropped their Glock in fine gunk and it had finally worked its way into extractor/striker block area. I was able to quickly pull the slide apart with a pointy bullet or Leatherman and blow it out with my mouth and presto, back in action. P320 owners have been told by SIG to not take their slide apart. Great idea. I don't care how well made a gun is, if fine matter gets into areas that don't like it, it stops working.
@SoldierWolf23
@SoldierWolf23 7 жыл бұрын
Isn't that like when the US Army told soldiers in Vietnam they don't need to clean their M16s? :P
@coltius
@coltius 7 жыл бұрын
Basically, yes. If you look up "P320 striker block spring" and variations of that you'll find people have had the spring easily pop right off when taking it apart or simply break and SIG's response has mostly been "Don't do it." If you look at the striker system they employed it seems to be exactly what you would expect from a gun that originally was hammered fired and they had to fit a striker system in it. I'm not saying the gun is terrible and will blow up but the modularity aspect is really hyped up for how little use it will probably receive. Just look at how much the SCAR hasn't been used in hot swappable configurations.

That's exactly represented by the evolution of printers. They gave up trying to prevent all paper jams. Engineers just design them to be easily popped open. I'd prefer something serviceable over not any day of the week. It's made by humans, therefore it will fail.

I'm sure you've figured this out by now, but in a situation where the trigger on a Glock can't be pulled, in order to move the trigger bar down out of engagement with the lug on the firing pin and allow the slide to come forward off the frame for disassembly, the solution is to lock the side to the rear, manually depress the firing pin locking plunger, and use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the firing pin slot in the slide to compress the firing pin, at which point the slide cover plate may be slipped off, this allows the firing pin to be removed from the gun, at which point the gun may be disassembled normally thereafter. And how's that for a run-on sentence?

The glock and the 1911 both earned their respect in combat. But nobody pretends like the 1911 is some flawless wondergun that will never malfunction. And the .45 is legit better as some task like barrier penetration (will go through glass without as much deflection), shooting with a supressor (unlike 9mm a full power .45 load is sub sonic) etc... It isn't some magic "insta-stop" bullet but it is a solid choice for a pistol round.
@fakemail4suckers
@fakemail4suckers 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying .45 is the best round I would chose 9mm all day long. My SD pistol is in 9mm. But .45 does have some advantages. (just not enough of them for me to carry one) But I hear lots of people griping about the 1911 being unreliable. There is a lot of gun threads about getting 1911's up to speed. Larry Vickers has talked about it too. Good stuff.

I never thought about not being able to field strip it because Glocks require you to fire the striker to remove the slide. I've got glocks, a shield, M&P, and HK pistols. The Smith and Wesson and HK pistols have a lever for disassembly (the shield can also be done with a trigger pull). Interesting and it's good that all of my pistols normally encounter the run of the mill urban/suburban environment sans mud.

Wow the 1911 did better. I don't invest my ego in brands or designs but it's crazy firearms designed over 100 years (1911,Luger,1912) are just as reliable as modern guns. Their only hindrance is cost of manufacturing and capacity.

this makes perfect sense, glock are a very open, loose toleranced gun, you might try using a grip plug and see what that does for it, there is an opening in the grip that allows grit into the striker assembly

So as it turns out, Glock’s biggest design flaw is that you can’t disassemble the gun without pulling the trigger and dropping the striker first and it has no backup method like, sayyyyy, the M&P series has. Very interesting

I would imagine the open rail areas on the side let the gun function with some debris, but clearly not a whole trench worth. Great test.
