@@thereallogus4174 the vast majority of the time, firearms are being carried/stored on body and not in use. Although the flap holster is slow, it is far more protective than a lot of the competition rigs that guys run. Those don't protect anything. But, it would be interesting to see if those guns need that protection in the first place (Glock, P320 etc.)

Years back, I've done a similar test out of curiosity with my Italian 92FS and a US made commercial M9 and found that the Mec-Gar flush-fit 18 round AFC mags and the USGI parkerized check-mate mags to be even less reliable than the old factory 15 round OEM on sand - there is less clearance for debris on the Mec-Gar. I'm not a big fan of the outdated factory 15 rounders, but I had minimal issues with the improved factory M9A1 PVD coated sand resistant mags on the same test. I didn't have a chance to sand test the current factory 17-round mags. Although it probably doesn't make much of a difference, since all 92 series have the open slide design; I would point out that the Italian 92A1 shown here, along with the discontinued 90-Two has a different and unique recoil spring and buffer system over the the standard 92FS/M9/M9A1/M9A3 which may or may not cause it to behave differently than a standard M9.

@@smithjones1906 That's a negative, 92A1/96A1/90-Two has a captive design metal recoil rod of smaller diameter and spring to make room for a blue polymer buffer in the dust cover channel, its more crowded in there. There are aftermarket recoil spring/buffer systems that mimics some features of the 92A1/96A1 for the 92FS/M9/M9A1/M9A3 such as from Wilson Combat, although I personally find no need for them, factory fluted polymer guide rod and spring works just fine, just as military issued.

If you get the chance, I'd love to see a video with a PPQ or PPQ M2.

SmallArmsSolutions indicated that the US military purchased cheaper magazines made by third party that was not to Beretta spec. Wasn't a fan of the M9, but for a system to work, all critical components needs to operate. I also assumed the M9s I used were 20 years old, so when it malfunctioned on me it was due to a lot of wear and tear. A lot of exposed surface area, but it did passed the Army pistol test. That says something...I suppose.

I think it's also worth pointing out that Beretta makes "sand resistant" mags for the M9 as well as PVD coated "special duty" mags. For normal conditions the Mec-Gars are the way to go though.

I remember taking a lot of time keeping my M9 clean in the desert; and that the magazines did not like being loaded with 15 rounds and carried around. My personal solution was to get new magazines and load them to 10 rounds instead. I understand that the current recommended load is 12 rounds, not 15.

I think the Beretta design is the best police or civilian carry gun but not for the military though I'm still getting a Beretta 92g tomorrow😁. Seriously as an army small arms repairman for 8 years I saw m9 abused and neglected in the field but still be serviceable and no complaints. The only things I routinely encountered we're a broken locking block here and there and missing trigger bar springs due to cleaning rod dislodging that spring when cleaning the magwell. Also had a couple finishes messed up from factory and screwed up rifling on a new unissued m9. I still think every gun owner should have a Beretta it's just a sweet shooting gun and reliable as long as it stays decently cleaned and maintained.

The USGI mags have two issues. The first issue is the phosphate finish has pore space and let's fine dust in which causes a lot of surface friction. The manufacturers are required to adhere to US Government specs and can't change the surface finish to black oxide, PVD, etc. without going through a painful approval process. Simply sanding the interior of a USGI magazine fixes the friction problem. The second issue is that the USGI mags are notorious for having the cheapest springs possible and are notorious for being weak as a result.

I had terrible issues with dust and my M9 while deployed. I tried multiple types of magazines however the locking surfaces were my issue. There were multiple occasions when the gun would have only fired the round in the chamber because the dust was so terrible.

I’m curious how the newer sand mags that come with the M9A1 and the NP3 treated sand mags that come with the A3 work. I know in my experience they worked when other mags weren’t, but nowhere near this degree of dust though.

+1 for the bad mag comments. Both times I did pistol qual (TBS and Camp Hansen) I had an armorer try to give me mags that were deformed and bulging. It was just widely understood that you needed to function test your mags with your exact pistol to be sure they would work.

I'd like to see a lubed test. See if the lube traps the dirt and dust before it gets to the mag. It might slow down the slide, but maybe help to seal slightly. I'd also like to see how long it runs with a fresh mag, similar to if you had a fresh one in a mag pouch in the field.

While I'm NOT disputing the results of this test you guys are very thorough and have been consistent in all of your tests, but I had relatively good luck when I carried a 20 something year old M9 for Uncle Sam when in field conditions. So having a good field holster with a decent protective flap helps much more than I would have thought years ago. But in a case where a person through either helo insertion or vehicle convoy encounters heavy fowling like this would it be prudent to change mags just in case? This is a question regarding guys who may not have the choice to change pistols even with sand resistant mags.

The anti friction magazines that ship with the M9A1 and M9A3 are silver with a different coating than the MecGar and normal factory mags. The mecgars aren't the sand resistant mags.

The sand is causing a fulcrum jam (imagine a wedge door stop that you use to keep a door open). A piece of sand becomes lodged between the follower and the magazine body. The follower gets caught at an odd angle on the piece of sand and the spring can't overcome the resistance. Coating would help with things sticking, but it wouldn't prevent a piece of sand from falling in, that's more in the design of the weapon. My guess is the ingress into the magazine happened when the first round was chambered; probably because of the sand that was sitting in the locking area. The way the slide is cut gravity would dump it all directly into the magazine at the worst time, before the 2nd round in the stack is lifted to the top of the magazine (following round still depressed by the slide), so its wide open for all those larger objects. It's the design of the gun more than the mag. Most magazines will fail a sand torture test in a similar manner.

Should of tried those fancy new sand mags from baretta. I got a bunch of them but haven't tried them yet. But when I carry my m9 I still use the mec-gar mags. They just slide right in there so silky smooth 😏 Im in the noth east so dust isn't too much of an issue for me. We have more mud than anything round here.

I've had this problem in the past when I'm in that moon dust environment for a long time. My pistol mag, the one in the gun only, literally fills with sand. (Several different pistols, several brands of mags) And obviously once that occurs, its basically worthless.i would just switch mags and it would be good to go. I would have to disassemble the old mag to pour the sand out from under the follower.

Ian is correct here, the m9 magazine is particularly sensitive to dust. I couldn't care if a gun fails with rocks in it! I don't expect any gun to function full of actual sand but any reasonable person would wipe the sand out of the action before expecting it to function. No gun can be tight enough to keep out the fine dust that can kill an m9 mag. What they would have found if they tried it, is than even in a pocket or wrapped in cloth, in a very dusty environment (like Irag) the m9 magazine will fail. The dust will penetrate the cloth and the extremely fine dust particles that permeate through will kill the magazine. It doesn't even have to appear dirty, it can look pretty clean and still the mag will fail. It will not kill the gun. The m9 can be covered in very fine talcum-like moon dust and function perfectly with a clean mag but the magazines cannot handle that dust. In Iraq, the only method I found was keeping mags in ziplock bags inside your pocket. If you did that, the gun could have dust stuck all over it and it would function just fine as long as that magazine was pristine. The alternative was daily unloading and cleaning of the mags and ammo. AR mags did not suffer from this in my experience. Short of actual sand, the AR mags seemed to work.
