I really enjoy your videos, they are amazing. And the best thing is that you always explain the things. A lot of channel are confusing and they either say too much info and confuse, or they say extremely low info what they are doing. I'm very happy to have this channel, it help a lot, thank you, James and keep up :)

when you paint projection with stencil. Does mudbox base on the image resolution or the stencil resolution to project. I mean do you need to scale up the stencil projection to retain the image resolution especially for closeup area? I found most of the projection base texture software are having this problem.
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
***** great question. I played around with that during the creation of the video. What I did to test it, was take one stencil, zoom it out so the full character is visible, and project it onto a 8192 layer. Then, I zoomed in so only the torso was visible, and projected that on to a new 8192 layer. My experience is that, even with the stencil zoomed out, Mudbox still projects the full pixel detail from the full resolution stencil image onto the mesh. I would love to hear if you have the same experience, or if you get a different result.
@ianameline19 жыл бұрын
+James Taylor That is correct James. Mudbox always samples the full resolution texture when projecting. It is fully independent of any zoom levels or scaling/transformation of wither the source stencil or the target model.

Hm. Is it typical in an asset pipeline for the texturing to occur before the sculpting?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
msampson3d good question, it depends on the artist and the subject material. Some artists start with the sculpt first. When using photoref like this, generally you'll start with the textures.

A well polished tutorial .. thx :) I have a problem with my U.Vs Q. 1.) Do I need to create my U.V map in Maya before importing to MudBox ? I tried creating in Mudbox .. it does generate a UV map.. but when I start to paint on the surface, I notice lots of thin straight lines appear in other areas of my model with the same colour I am using to paint. 2.) Sure would appreciate a detailed tut on exporting PTex to Maya :) Once again... awesome tutorial ... you got me subscribed, looking forward to more
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Michael Banks thanks Michael! 1: sounds like you have overlapping UVs. You don't need UVs to paint, you can rely on ptex instead. In that case, you need to delete all the UVs on your mesh in maya.before sending it over. 2: good idea for a tutorial, I will hopefully be able to tackle that one soon. :)

Hi james. great tutorial. im a student and i enjoy watching these series. can i just use the paint tools in maya to paint my character? i am not working off of any textured references, they are just outlines and the character is from scratch.
@MethodJTV8 жыл бұрын
the PaintFX paint tools? You could, but they aren't super great. Hopefully Mudbox's paint functionality gets imported into Maya now that the sculpting tools are already there!

Does anybody know, what happens to the quality of our textures if we scale our stencils making it bigger and projecting it really up close on the surface of our the models? And also if this makes the quality of our textures bad, when we just want match the scale of textures to the scale of our models, whats the correct way to match them both? Scaling our stencils up while making our models bigger as well projecting it up close, or just keeping our stencils' in their original size while making our models smaller instead by projecting it far away?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Ivkov Ivkov I tested this at one point. It seems that mudbox always projects the texture at its highest resolution. So even if your stencil is zoomed out and small, you should still get the full resolution texture being applied.

James Taylor last question.Would you suggest Zbrush or Mudbox?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Teh Zord I am a big Mudbox fan, especially for people just learning to sculpt. It is just so much easier to learn and use. Lots of people argue about which has better features, but for me Mudbox's usability is what really makes the difference.
@JustRiivox9 жыл бұрын
James Taylor yeh, Mudbox's UI is much easier than the zbrush one.But since im just starting off, when I make a model in mudbox, wich program should I use to animate it? for cartoons or whatever?
