I'm getting a flurry of promotions for things Bruce Springsteen is doing these days (spring 2019). I really was moved to laughter and tears during the Kennedy Centre Honours, mostly by Michelle Obama who had exquisite timing; but having read Springsteen's autobio and also Dylan's I'm struck by the lavishness and baroque timbre of their writing style. Tom never wrote anything but lyrics to music and never spoke unless he had something to say and it was usually funny or funny and furiously angry about some injustice. I don't think there was anyone ever like him. And this is probably a good place to stop and say tx for your great post.

This song feels like the spiritual successor to his '89 classic single I Won't Back Down -- and yet, with no disrespect to the latter as I love Full Moon Fever... Scare Easy easily surpasses I Won't Back Down in most every way. It's unbelievable that Petty is topping his own incredible heights, nearly 20 years later. "I am a loser at the top of my game" has to go down as one of the all-time great lyrics. Petty really had some incredible stuff going on in '08-'10, with the Mudcrutch and Mojo sessions at that LA-area practice warehouse they had. Scare Easy, Lover Of The Bayou, Something Good Coming, and Trip To Pirate's Cove... dude was pushing 60 years old at this time, and making some of the absolute best music of his life. Magic.

Won't Back Down was seriously in the mist of time and hard for TP to be seen as the stubborn single-minded man he was, and thank god he was. So unlike every other band leader, he regroups his people from his personal history and you get brilliant collaboration and of course he's going to come up with lyrics on this theme because that is who he is. Who cares which came first? Why am I replying to this crap????? Sometimes I really hate the internet.

@@benjaminpbarrett8546 By now you know perfectly well that what you call a simple intellectual interaction was a bunch of yahoos being offensive for fun. What I admired most about Tom was what is termed negative capability; the ability to empathically put yourself into the shoes of someone you may dislike, but understand. A good example of that was the song Rebels, which almost cost him his hand. I wish you well, and am glad we will never meet.

Mike Campbell's sound is timeless. His guitar solos always fit the song. It's been that way since day one with he and Tom. Awesome song I just came across from Tom Petty and friends. First heard this song two nights ago at the end of the movie Appaloosa, a thrilling, well-made Western starring Ed Harris and Renee Zelwegger. I knew right away it was Petty singing, but could not place the song, which is very strange as I am a huge Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan and I know my music. I have seen Petty and his various bands many times, the first time in 1979. It still amazes me that he has been putting out great tunes for 40 years and is as good today as he was when he wrote "American Girl" circa 1976. Well, it turns out that this song is from a relatively new project of his called Mudcrutch, which includes members of the Heartbreakers, as well as some of his other close musician friends. This is an awesome song...one of my favorites he has ever done, and that is saying a lot! Check it out. The movie is good too.

Thank you. Good stuff. Another rock history enthusiast! Ed Harris, who plays the lead male role in the movie, also wrote a song that they play during the ending credits after "Scare Easy." It's a good song called "You'll Never Leave My Heart." Check it out. By the way, I learned that Mudcrutch formed in 1970 in Petty's hometown of Gainesville, Fl., and was the house band at a local bar called Dub's Lounge, before they relocated to L.A. Anybody know whether Dubb's still exists?

I found this poem, attribution disputed here it is: Do not stand by my grave and weep/I am not there I do not sleep. I am the thousand winds that blow/I am the diamond glints of snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain/I am the gentle autumn rain When you awake in the morning hush/I am the soft uplifting rush of great birds in circled flight/I am the soft stars in the night. Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there I did not die. This is a remarkable song and fits well at the end of Appaloosa. Tough guy machismo with lover boy sensibilities. Go on wit ya bad self, Tom Petty!

IMO Appaloosa doesn't end till this song ends. Every time I've seen it, I've just had to let those credits roll through.
