He truly rocks the hell out of this song. Love this tune. Fantastic lyrics. Most importantly he is one of the few who stays true to himself and doesn't waiver from that. That takes a great deal of courage in the cut throat business he has chosen. I realize he makes his living off the music, but I believe for him, it's all about the music, not the almighty dollar.

@@kleetus92 Yeah, Petty was known as a staunch guardian of his artistic control and artistic freedom. In the late 70's he was embroiled in a legal battle over the fact that ABC records was sold to MCA records. He was furious with them for making this major change without his consent. He wants complete control of his music and the record labels don't like to give in to the artist's. And in his case, THAT doesn't fly. Don't blame him a bit for standing his ground.

Your words echoed my feelings 101% Deborah. I didn't even really understand it at the time as I had never gotten this feeling for a passing favorite rocker, but Tom was different. Somehow, with all the music, all the bands, somehow he connected with me on so many levels. The highs, the lows, the human behind the beat and that's why I cried like a baby when I heard of his passing, and was depressed for 2 weeks. I haven't felt that way for family members for God's sake, but all I can say was that it was an honest emotion, and how I felt, and that was his gift. That connection he gave us to his soul, and to the flawed and beautiful man behind the music. Thank you Tom for living, you made my journey better for knowing you through the music.

@@deborahhanna6640 no this has been out for a while. At least since 2006. It wasnt a early work. But I remember hearing this in a concert in 2006. I hadn't gotten a Petty album since 1995-1996 and it I know it wasnt on any of those. I'm too lazy to google it. But it's one of his best and goes to show how good he was. He stuck to his sound his whole career and continued to make great songs well past his "prime" hit making years. He was a artist who stayed true to his sound and roots and never had to change to fit what modern bands were going to try and stay relevant. More than you can say for Metallica. They changed to whatever direction wind blew. I remember the late 90s early 2000s they were wearing makeup making terrible alt rock music cause that's the genre of rock getting most attention at the time. If they could I swear they would have tried to do numetal when it was popular cause they always wanna be on that money train and get every dime. They still touring now cause they know they can make alot being a nostalgic act. Since nostalgia is what sells in rock last 10 years. Man they really changed as a band and people once Black album made them biggest band In the world. Tom Petty never did and he also never sued his own fans for just wanting his music. I never met him but I was close when he came out to get on his bus. He stopped and signed everyone's stuff. I didnt have anything to sign. I just wanted a picture with him but I didnt egt it. But he appreciated every fan he had young and old. He was a great person. And the world is a more worse off place without him in it

I prefer the songs off the entire LIVE albums, then I do the recorded studio versions. Which, for twenty-something songs, preferring EVERY.. single, one.. is quite rare.. (at least for me it is). This has just become my favorite Tom Petty song. These guys are rocking the hell out of this song. The musicianship is incredible. And the tone of those guitars! It's been about 100 degrees here in Oregon today, so I have every window open and I've got this baby at a pretty substantial volume level because I freaking love this tune. My neighbors, on either side of me, who are all good folk, have probably memorized the words, whether they wanted to or not. Thanks for rockin' me Mr. Petty.

I think I first heard this song in 2007 when I was 4. I think it might have been the first song I was able to actually recognize. Needless to say, it's my favorite Petty song.

Such a great song, one of my absolute favourites by Tom Petty. Saving Grace just goes to show that he's still got it just as much as he always has!
