I’m 21 years old and Tom Petty has always been related, in my mind, to my dad. Alongside the Travelling Willburys and George Harrison, it’s what he always used to play on the car when going on our yearly summer trip. It’s one of those things you remember from a kid that you’ll always remember. I always get very emotional when listening to him, makes me miss those days so much. My dad is still alive, but I already know that Tom’s music will accompany me for the rest of my life.

You should ask your dad about what that song meant back then. Maybe he didn’t know because you were better off than we were but when I started working in Pennsylvania in the 80s unemployment was about 25%. You can see that influence in the song very similar to Billy Joel Allentown song and Bruce Springsteen songs people like them and Tom Petty meant a lot to us and little dying towns like Pottstown Pennsylvania back then. I wish I could’ve told him that 💚

I first heard this song recently on a utube video of Tom Petty on the David Letterman show from 1989 ...when the song/album came out.. He performed it with the Heartbreakers on that show. It was strange because the band was out on the stage and Tom came out after them and wasn't smiling...and didn't look or smile at the audience. He went and got his guitar and walked to the microphone and the song started and he never had any eye contact with the HB's and he seemed almost estranged from them....it was unusual I thought. I felt a strange vibe. Tried to think why that might be and remembered an interview where some of the band said they were not happy about Tom making the 2 albums and several videos with the Travelling Willburys...which was in 1988 - 89. Some of them said in an interview that they felt left out of it and even Mike Campbell said he would've liked to have been included. Maybe there was some tension briefly between them in 1989. When he finished singing, D.L. came over to Tom and shook his hand and don't remember Tom smiling at all.....it was strange. Throughout the song the camera mostly did close ups of Tom Petty 's face and he looked troubled....the song has got some sadness and almost a depressed feeling to it..... Miss and ❤️ TP. Miss the music they made together.

The song reminds me that when someone comes into your life and they check off all the boxes and they're into you and you're into them and you just wanted to build something together...but the mask slipped. She was the face in the crowd the first time I met her. Now she's back to being a face in the crowd. A face I never really knew.
