Exact same for me. And he legit got me into playing music at 15/16, 31 now and still play. I said “he knows how I feel, like crap. He’s not just some superstar… he’s a real-life loser who knows how hard the journey can be.” I say that in an affectionate way.

@@lorrainevismara5415 It's what shapez73 says. Tom goes straight to the soul of things, to the stuff we are really made of, and the shock of that can get to you so quickly, cut through the defenses, touch you where you're tender, the place you usually have to hide, so you flinch a little, you tear up. It's a natural thing. It's you. It's the heart coming into the light and blinking. Damn I miss him. So now there's that, too.

She is, and will always be my hero, miss her soooo much, and I thank God for blessing me, and my 6 brothers & sisters with such a wonderful Mother…❤️ ❤️Love you Mom💋🕊

I’m 21 years old and Tom Petty has always been related, in my mind, to my dad. Alongside the Travelling Willburys and George Harrison, it’s what he always used to play on the car when going on our yearly summer trip. It’s one of those things you remember from a kid that you’ll always remember. I always get very emotional when listening to him, makes me miss those days so much. My dad is still alive, but I already know that Tom’s music will accompany me for the rest of my life.

You should ask your dad about what that song meant back then. Maybe he didn’t know because you were better off than we were but when I started working in Pennsylvania in the 80s unemployment was about 25%. You can see that influence in the song very similar to Billy Joel Allentown song and Bruce Springsteen songs people like them and Tom Petty meant a lot to us and little dying towns like Pottstown Pennsylvania back then. I wish I could’ve told him that 💚

I first heard this song recently on a utube video of Tom Petty on the David Letterman show from 1989 ...when the song/album came out.. He performed it with the Heartbreakers on that show. It was strange because the band was out on the stage and Tom came out after them and wasn't smiling...and didn't look or smile at the audience. He went and got his guitar and walked to the microphone and the song started and he never had any eye contact with the HB's and he seemed almost estranged from them....it was unusual I thought. I felt a strange vibe. Tried to think why that might be and remembered an interview where some of the band said they were not happy about Tom making the 2 albums and several videos with the Travelling Willburys...which was in 1988 - 89. Some of them said in an interview that they felt left out of it and even Mike Campbell said he would've liked to have been included. Maybe there was some tension briefly between them in 1989. When he finished singing, D.L. came over to Tom and shook his hand and don't remember Tom smiling at all.....it was strange. Throughout the song the camera mostly did close ups of Tom Petty 's face and he looked troubled....the song has got some sadness and almost a depressed feeling to it..... Miss and ❤️ TP. Miss the music they made together.

It was the first time I've wept over a performer who left us -- and being a fairly new real fan of Tom Petty, it seems strange. But it was not only the shock of his loss, it was the same weekend the year prior that I lost my husband. It was an emotional weekend already and to learn of Tom's crisis and ultimate death was just overwhelming. I'd looked so forward to the opportunity to see him perform live! What a legacy and treasure of amazing music we have!

I feel the same way! It it me really hard because it was so unexpected. He had so much to live for being only 66. Far too young to die.

Oh I'm an old fan since 1977 I lived in Los Angeles when Tom Petty first began taking off so to speak. Still sad he's gone forever.

Flyspit H .... Chris Cornell was hard but I didn’t know Tom had passed till I got work that day and an electronic bill board had it up showing him and his birth and death dates ... I had to pull over and I wasn’t alone there was two other cars off the highway and I’m sure it was for the same reason .... WE WERE CRYING .....knowing this man was gone from us.... but his music lives on and with it his spirit will as well!

I heard this song after breaking up with my girlfriend. Although she was narcissistic, grief was real. To withdraw my love because it wasn't being given nor able to be received was heart wrenching. The song reminds me that when someone comes into your life and they check off all the boxes and they're into you and you're into them and you just wanted to build something together...but the mask slipped. She was the face in the crowd the first time I met her. Now she's back to being a face in the crowd. A face I never really knew.

Genuinely sad for the loss of Tom. Unlikely that anyone can capture that spirit again because today's music is just...awful.

It was truly amazing when the giant known as Tom Petty walked the earth. I mourned his loss like I really know him. That's when you know.....what you've done with your life was special. When those who had never seen nor spoken to you.....shed a tear for your existence.

My big sister and I saw Tom so many times free at the bandshell in G'ville. I lost her to COVID19 in 2021. I was in shock when Tom died and now again. How many do we have to lose?
