My accountant, the Rogue Dentist and I saw Muddy Waters Live in Ann Arbor at the State Theatre in 1979. It was a packed house. The band came on stage and played for 15 minutes. Muddy came out, the crowd went wild. I mean how often do you get to see a real musical legend up close and personal? He showed up drunk and sat on a little stool with his guitar. Five minutes into the show he started checking his watch. I told my friends 'watch, he is getting ready to leave.' After playing for 15 minutes he mumbled "I gotta go but the band is still gonna play" and proceeded to stumble off stage and out of sight. The whole time that he did play (what little there was) one of his devoted but inarticulate fans sitting directly behind me spent the whole time screaming gibberish. Within a few minutes the crowd got up and filed out as the band played on, after all they were under contract, to an empty house. Apparently the promoter failed to specify that sobriety and Muddy himself actually needed to be present. Muddy is long dead so I guess my friends and I will never get our $7 back.

I saw Muddy waters and his incredible band live in Melbourne in about 1974 (when I was about 23). I didn't previously know about him. I don't think I could quite believe what I was experiencing. The noise was just like live magic. I remember floating out of Dallas Brooks Hall in a daze. I'd been to many top rock concerts prior to that, but this experience beat all of them. Even now, as I write and listen, this download is bringing it all back to me. Thanks so much.

I first heard the Blues on a "soul" station (I personally detest that label) in Buffalo NY in 1964. The fact that the Stones lifted their name and tunes from Muddy, piqued my couriosity even more and sent me along a road of a life long love of the Blues. From Muddy, Wolf, B.B., Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop, Jimmy Reed to the "new" player, Christone, Samantha Fish, Tommy Castro, Joe Bonamassa and dozens of others, the Blues is still alive and well. I have Sirius radio in my SUV and the only station I listen to is B.B. King's BLUESVILLE. As Willie Dixon once said, "Blues is the truth". Well said, Mr. D!

This is one of the best blues bands to ever be on stage together, and Muddy was the King Bee. Bob Margolin, Luther Guitar Junior Johnson, and and Jerry Portnoy are still jamming, go see them if you can. RIP Muddy, Pinetop. Willie and Fuzz. Their 77 tour with Johnny Winter and James Cotton is still the best show that I've ever seen out of at least 1,000. There are shows available. Willie is by far my favorite drummer. Check out his schism on Walkin Thru the Park on Johnny's Nothin But the Blues album. Muddy and Johnny trade vocals. Johnny, the Brits, and Bill Graham all helped introduce Muddy to the world. Dog bless them. Muddy's 50's and 60's bands were incredible too with Jimmy Rogers, Little and Big Walter (Jimmy, Muddy. And Big Walter reunited in the 70's for Muddy's I'm Ready album. His bands and recordings featured so many legends. If you're a auperfan, check out Muddy's albums and his band nembers solo works, you will be astounded. Sammy Lawhorn, Otis Spann, Sunnyland Slim, Junior Wells, Luther Tucker, Louis and Dave Myers, Pat Hare, Frances Clay, Fred Below, Carey Bel, S.P. Leary, and so many more.

The crowd is lively without being too prominent, and Muddy is backed by his sublime latter-day touring band which featured drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, harpist Jerry Portnoy, bassist Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, guitarists Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson and Bob Margolin, and the great Joe "Pinetop" Perkins on piano

P.S. I got kicked out of Muddy's Son (Big Bill Morgenfield)'s concert for drinkin' and dancin' and checkin' out his licks... My how times have changed. That was in 2012 or some latter-day nonsense...

The thought that crosses my mind almost every time I hear blues music (esp., by Muddy Waters): It's virtually impossible to calculate how much of popular music worldwide owes a huge debt to blues music. And just about as impossible to find a finer paragon for the blues than Muddy Waters.

Yes. this is correct. and if you keep digging you end up back in West Africa where the blues seem to have originated. If you haven't heard them yet, check out Putumayo's "Memphis to Mali" and also Ry Cooder+ Ali Farka Toure's "Talking Timbuktu" or just Ali's own "Heygana"

I saw Muddy Waters with this same band as an opening act for Eric Clapton in March 1979 in El Paso, Texas. I was 16 and way too young to fully appreciate this at the time, but I treasure the memory. Thanks for posting this.
