My husband asked me one morning on a weekend what I wanted to do that day and I said "I wanna go mudlarking in England" he looked at me like I was nuts. He now knows what that means, LOL! I have a big creek where we live but the only thing I'd probably find here are flood ducks (white plastic milk jugs) and old tires, ( a lot have been cleaned up lately and I pick up what I can) so, I will live vicariously through ya'll. and get excited when you turn that piece of pottery over and see colorful designs.

That's awful about your dad, but the mines were very dangerous places, we had a few fatalities in my time there. Now the only coal I see is on the river banks, where the view is nicer, the company is better and the air is cleaner. 🙂 Phil

I love to find coal pieces in my town, Soddy, TN, populated by miners in the mid 1800's. I live one street over from Durham St. (after Durham, England); it's also known as Black Track. Rails ran down from the mines where the road is, and coal was transported by rail to the Tennessee River and the ferries. The soil is still black and smells like coal in the yards around there. The tipples were one block over.

Many of my family worked the mines in Kentucky and West Virginia. My uncle lost his leg in a mining accident. His son often spoke of the sounds. My cousin spoke of his father being jolted out of a deep sleep when an air vent motor malfunctioned. Those who worked night shift during the war hardly ever saw any sunshine especially in the winter time. The most chilling sound of all was when the whistle blew. That meant a collapse with men trapped. The whole community would drop what they were doing and run to the mine. The Mrs. needs a walking stick for support.
@LetsgowithTheJohnsons4 жыл бұрын
Wow, it sounds so similar to our valley communities that grew up around the mines here. Caroline could do with a stick, but she has her 'Grabber' in 1 hand and the camera in the other, so has to lean on me when the ground gets steep 🙂🙃 Phil

You were a child of a mill/ or miner. My husband was a child of a mill worker, Steel mill. Measuring the coke and ore for the production of steel. His grandfather had a coal seam on his farm, so Pup mined his own coal for home heat. By hand with a wheelbarrow. So I know how hard the life was. That is what we call a wedge, hit it and split wood or stone. The other is a huge hinge that could be from a big door. The baths were the place you talked about your day, cleaned up before going home to supper. I bet your grabber is by the culvert where the wedge was found.
@LetsgowithTheJohnsons4 жыл бұрын
Yes Mary, a lot of our family worked in the mines, and I went down the pit straight from school at 16. I remember one day when the pit head baths boiler broke down and I came home filthy black, just as my grandparent's generation had done every day. Glad you recognised the wedge, different name to cleft, but did the same job, and yes, that would have been a pretty big door to need a hinge like that. And you're right the grabber was at the culvert 🙂

I stopped by the river not far from there on my way home today and found a lovely little bottle tip. I even found an intact(ish) clay pipe. There was a lot of interesting and old stuff there among the ridged pottery shards. Let me know if you want the location. It could do with a good hunt before it floods again and I've got no time to go back.

Wow that's so kind of you Dave, it sounds great and we'd love to check it out if you're sure you won't have the time to get back there yourself. Thanks. 🙂🙃

I don't have any free time for weeks and it'll be too overgrown to access by then I imagine. I'd love to see a video of what you can find there though. I can't see a contact email on your profile. Let me know how I can send you directions as I'd rather not post them publicly just in case.

No fish then? Still no marbles either. Also no ball today. Shocking! I think your psychic ball finding powers are slipping!.

That lion glass looks old and precious. It could be a seal out of a window?

I've had an initial dig about it for you. Ogilvie, Gwillam and Mowbray feature crowned lions in their crests. But early representations of Leo in the zodiac that I've seen also look like this. It's fascinating. Post some pictures to a finds forum perhaps? I'd love to know what it is and we'll done on a great find

Really not sure Phil should get waders. If they fill up with water he will be dragged under.
