Mudlarking the River Thames in London - A Very Mysterious Coin - Can you ID it?

Join me as I take a mudlarking trip to the River Thames in London and search for historical artefacts from the past. On this outing I am particularly fortunate and find 3 coins. I recognise one as being Victorian but the other two are mysteries until I get home and clean them off! Can you ID them before I tell you what they are?
It's amazing what you can learn from the objects you find in the Thames mud. In this instance, I learned some interesting bits of info about the Monarchs on the coins! There are also a few other artefacts which you might be able to help me to identify!

Thank you Nicola. I have seen that video before but much of it was forgotten, like the turtle rib. No way was I gonna name what that was. Such an unusual find. The Fiolet pipes stir curiosity so plan to look them up searching first through the Great Exhibition. One thing leads to another. Just as a side comment.....if you ever come to Melbourne, we have a large house with two spare rooms. You may use them to keep your accom cost down if you have a mind to. Aussies are a very friendly bunch and love to help out where we can. Our Yarra river is not much of a search area but there are lots of creeks and streams around the old gold mining areas where relics may be unearthed. Nothing as old as in England of course.

Unbelievably, Walter Whiffin is one of my relatives. As soon as you said the name I knew he was in my family tree. He is my first cousin x5 removed. My 5th Great Grandfather who was Richard Whiffin b 21 May 1769 in Westerham Kent was Walter’s grandfather. I am an amateur genealogist and have been researching my family tree for almost 20 years so have managed to do quite a lot of research in that time. I can’t believe you found a button belonging to/made by someone in my tree. Simply amazing!

That particular French coin was made from melted down old naval guns. So the metal in your coin was a naval canon from a ship of Louis the thirteenth or even earlier.

Hi Nicola! the "mystery coin" is a 6 deniers piece (nominal equivalent to the English "sixpence" but bronze), this type is called "dardanne" and was struck only under Louis XIV of France (1643-1715), I think in the few last years of his reign. In the center of the triangle there is a letter, it is the mintmark, it seems to be "K", which is Bordeaux mint. They are rare in high grade but common in worn condition. I recall a "dardanne" was one of my firts "ancient" coins when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my aunt bought it for me in a flea market here in Buenos Aires!

I love seeing these videos from England. I have never been able to travel there. But I am 1st generation born in the United States. my mom came from England. After World War II she travelled here. with her mum and dad. The history that you can touch in England. is so much older than anything we can find here. It is so exciting. Nicola did you know that seeing a butterfly is thought to be a sign that a loved one who has passed away is nearby. As you mentioned the coins I thought this might interest you. That butterfly really did not want to fly away.

Nicola, This was an excellent video, I loved your finds and your information, it added so much to the presentation. I follow the Mudpies from Bristol, Father and Daughter, I commented on their new mud christened shirts and how the mud was able to preserve so many things. Josie wrote back and said it's really more a clay rather than mud, but claying the Thames or Thames Clay larkers really doesn't work:) That poor Cormorant, I wondered if it would be able to ingest that Flatfish, but I wasn't surprised the enterprising gull got it! Beautiful video! I particularly liked the lights on the water at the end. The link between coins and pipes was very nice; who knows, perhaps those coins bought pipes! In any case, I loved the symmetry of the two trios; it was, as you said, very satisfying.
