Keep in mind, if you were to find ANYTHING if historical value, by law, it must be turned over to the British Museum. They will then decide if they want it and pay you a finder's fee, or let you keep it as they already have examples of what's found.

I do not know about English customs but in the Netherlands we have a saying: "Het loodje leggen." (to lay the lead) It means that you are at your end and you are finished. It originated with the custom that when you where poor and you needed help you went to the local poor house and asked for it. You would get a let token you could use and it was commonly used when a member of your family died and you had no money to bury them. You gave the token to the undertaker and I found some references in burial books way back in the 17th century where next to the name of the deceased it read "two leads layed"

Love the NAAFI fragment. My Mum was in the NAAFI during the war, and was sent to Italy and Algeria. She also worked deep under Whitehall where the Churchill War Rooms Are now. When the Thames was at high tide, they had to stand on duck boards to keep dry as it flooded under there! One evening she said Churchill came along to the canteen and they asked him what he’d like to eat. He said, “Oh, whatever you girls are making.” 😁

@@nicolawhitemudlark I was curious about the message in a bottle? I am the father of a little girl who has passed from leukemia and the last year of her life she sent 5 messages in the Mississippi river "I was stationed in Missouri at the time" and she had fought and fought because she continued to get emails from people who had found her messages and continued the chain. The reason I am posting this is that you said you would put the message in your collection. In my personal experience I know what a message in a bottle can do for someone when it gives them the will to continue living past what doctors say they have. Please do like many other people on this comment section have suggested and make copies for your private collection and place the message back for someone else. What you're doing is the same as destroying a child's hope. I am not trying to be mean by that comment just factual. If you decide to take my advise I have a few tips to help keep the bottle moving down the river better and not deteriorate. If you put it back, change the bottle to a new one "it will help keep the message floating further" and apply a light coat to rtv silicone to the caps threads. This helps to keep the bottle from getting water inside and destroying the notes and sinking. And add to your message the instructions. Finally, use a permanent marker "Sharpie works great" and write "Message in a bottle, threads sealed with silicone" on the exterior of bottle so the finder will understand why the cap wont come off. We received emails all the way to the mouth of the Mississippi river and then from a fishing boat, and after Melissa had passed we continue to receive emails. So far Cancun, Mexico is the furthest out. These messages continue to give me and my wife memories of a child we can no longer hold. Please don't break the chain! Sincerely SSGT. Mike Smith USMC

I have been watching your videos for a while and wished every time I had a torpedo bottle of my own. never voiced it just thought it in my mind and Imagine my surprise, my sister gave me a beautiful Thames torpedo bottle, she actually found mudlarking in the early 80ties, this past 2020 Christmas as a gift. I cried. Only my sis would know what I secretly wanted in my heart for a special gift. My sis has had the worst cancer in 2020 and we live in Texas, she is a collector of art and her house is on the Austin Weird Homes Tour and it is so wierd and lovely all the same. My Mum was a British war bride. I spent half my life flying back and forth the big pond and your accent and colloquialisms remind me of my Mother's voice and you say the quintessential English epitaphs she used to sling about and it reminds me where I learned them, my Mom long dead. Thank you for your lovely calming informative videos. My bright spot in 2020...Gillian Doreen Smith, using my son's u-tube LOL...

Another fantastic video from you. Love that you include nature in your videos, but Charlie was a real surprise. Your edits are great, too. I hate when blogs switch to music and it blows your eardrums because of volume changes. Thanks.

Hi Nicola! First off, you are rocking your pink boots! I really enjoyed this video! The bottles are great, but I love the giant marble, Duggie the duck 🦆, and most especially the seal! Thanks for the adventure and I’m looking forward to the next one!!

Hi Nicola, I just returned to the states from a Mudlarking adventure in London. You’ve inspired me to start a new hobby of Mudlarking. Can’t wait to return. I had a permit and reported my finds to the Museum of London.

A lot of those bricks were Scottish. My uncle used to work in the brick works in Glenboig, my grt grandparents lived in Bonniebridge, they were both from Ireland born in 1870s so it's nice to see something from those areas so far from home, as I am. I love that wee torpedo bottle, such a nice shape. The ink bottle is very pretty. The pipe on first sight, looked like a snake to me! probably totally wrong!!!

It always makes me sad when I watch these mudlarkers & they leave whole bricks w/ writing on them behind!☹ I get that they probably get heavy & hard to lug out, but when it is still whole it would be totally worth it to me. Imagine the garden path, patio, or flower bed edging they would create?!?! It would be so magical to me have all those little bits of history literally at my feet!!!

you really should put your own message in a bottle with those 2 and set them on their way

I agree. Put it back in the water and let go along its way. Hopefully someone else can enjoy the thrill of finding the message.

I shall be opposite to everybody else and say don't throw it back in the river (or the sea) - it's plastic and will only add to the overburden of plastic already killing wildlife in the sea.

Hello from Washington State Charlie for President!🇺🇸!!!’ I was reading a comment by a gentleman Steve H. His words describing all that you do from beginning to the end of your videos were spot on!! He took the thoughts right out of my mind and typed them to you !!😊 I LOVE watching you walk on the shore and finding wonderful things... and teaching us on what you’ve found. I LOVE THAT !!!!! Thank you soooo much for helping me!! And getting me out of depression modes!! I’m really mean that!! What I wouldn’t give to be a little Charlie 🦀and fallow you around lol !! Congratulations to your son and the band!!! Last..... good luck to you on stage!!!! I’m hoping the video is ok with you so we can watch!!! Bye for now 🥰 Kathy ❤️

Fantastic finds! Especially love the blue ink bottle. Fish tank gravel helps to clean the inside of bottles. I also saw someone suggest rice, which is probably the more enviromentally friendly option.

Crushed ice and salt. It is so irritating that you have to watch your skin. Does amazing work on glass without scratching.
