I have never noticed that door before...... must be you are good at not filming it ....LOL!!! Great job to your husband on your stairs! I have wanted new stair treads for a long time and CONTRACTORS tell me it is expense and hard ? I think THEY THINK I want a new 13 steps stairway ...🤷‍♀️ No... just the tops ..... The dutch door sounds like such a nice idea. Also, the bead-board on the ceiling. I think you need a large hanging light that is a statement piece and blends into your cottage decor. Maybe you can find a nice light when you go antiquing next with your mother!

I feel a dutch door is a GREAT idea,, but just another idea,,,,, we have an old door at the bottom of our basement stairs and we took the top panel out of the door and put glass in to let some light in.. I love it

Take the original door and cut out the inner panel and replace it with glass. My dad did this to our front door and the light is awesome.

Beadboard would be great on the ceiling back there and you could probably do it in a way that could give you plumbing access if needed.

Oh my gosh! Finally a back doorway that is exactly like mine. I’ve searched Pinterest for years to find decor ideas and nothing! Our homes are very similar in style and era. We finally just spruced up our mud room/back door with shiplap and some faux brick wallpaper, some hooks and a pine shelf on the right of the stairs. We also have the shoe cubby and that awkward piece of wall on the hinge side of the door. We also replaced the solid door to the kitchen with a french door for more light. Our door also opens into the kitchen so it doesn’t get in the way of coming and going up the stairs. Just some ideas. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

*Dutch Door* . I have a similar situation in my kitchen to basement area. I have to leave the basement door open all the time because I have a dog door installed in the door at the landing area. Having the door open all the time blocks off 3/4 of a beautiful white beadboard wall in the kitchen. I would like to keep the original door in case it is needed during another season of life. I am on the hunt for a vintage door that will the purpose as a dutch door.

to get more light on that kitchen area. why not just switch the doors. The outside door has windows at the top. If you have a screen door to the back, you could just open the outside door and then the light would come thru the windows on the inside door.
