A great analysis as usual Mufti. I feel that pig being haram is not the only narrative that we have inherited from Mosaic law. Other dictums such as circumcision have also being passed on. Same for many stories like Noah’s flood, David’s might and Samuel and soul etc etc. A pure historical analysis of these, always show a gradual development of these narratives, some times from older history or older religions like zoroasterinism or Hinduism. It’s difficult to tease out the historicity of antiquity - I can feel and sense your underlying dilemma.

Very good analysis. I totally related to that P.I.G thing. We, as children, used to spit after saying pig and the common saying was that he who says pig, every food becomes haram for him for 40 Days. Why would God create something and then detest it, why create it then? Very nice video, Thankx MALM

Very interesting talk. Though it feels like it stopped just when it was getting really interesting. Though at the same time I can understand why you wouldn’t want to push forward further at that point, since it leads into challenging questions. You did a good job looking at the interplay of likely historical, sociocultural, geographic-environmental, inter-religious, inter-cultural, and medical reasons behind the appearance and reinforcement of the taboo on eating pork in the ancient and pre-modern mid-East. But then I guess the natural question that follows (building on some of the themes of some of your other content) is what does all of this mean then in times and places where those concerns and assumptions that (probably) led to the taboo on pork don’t apply? What do we make of that as Muslims in the 21st century?

It is haram as per the Quran says literally. The Quran does not give a functional criteria by which we decide which meats to eat from which it follows that the pig is haram, a criteria which may change how we act in relation to the pig. The Quran says literally “No” to “pig”, literally. Π

Salam 'alaykoum wa raHmatullah. 👉1:11 As a maliki muqallid I heard that our madhab was the only one forbidding horse meat (based on surah 16 verse 8) while hanafis look it at makrooh (though kazakh, kyrgyz and other central asians hanafis consume it a lot) and shafii as well as Hanbalis deem it to be mubaH without problem. So according to you there is an opinion in maliki madhab saying horse meat is permissible ? Could you provide the name of a scholar and/or book who/which upheld this please ?

From watching the video, I assume that Paul (in the Bible) was trying to bridge this gap between eating and not eating pig because in the letters attributed to him, he said that all food is clean unless someone sees it as unclean (Romans 14:14). Regarding not saying the word pig, YES as a child we were discouraged to even say the word and till this day, my parents still do not say it. I try to enlighten them from time to time but I bear in mind that its how they grew up so...

Qur’an is not a book about eating guidelines. Denied (haraam حُرِّمَتْ) upon you is the ignorance, and what pours forth, and engaging without thinking deeply and being deceitful, and anything that is not in the worthiness of binding (uhillu أُهِلَّ) with Allah, and that which the intelligence cannot accept, and that which causes mental confusion leading to ignorance, and which causes the mind to fall from a higher conscious in order to accept , and that which your reason rejects and repels, and do not deliberate on what your mind has grasped except what you have fully perceived, examined, and made clearly evident based on what you were originally seeking and building upon and the relaying of incomplete parts is a departure…

Wait wait bro! I have a question! You're brilliant in explaining the dogmatic belief of not eating pork "chops" from the sociological, anthropological and historic perspectives but where would you put the "Devin logic" in these processes per se? You're argument seems like the God was having an appeasing attitude towards the social norms built in the society? If that was it? Then why the same wasn't done in the case of other things that were forbidden? I didn't get the point of all this at all

Salaam MALM... Thanks for the upload, I'd like to add something that you may not be aware of which may change some of your view on the Historical aspect of Pigs within culture and their decline. I disagree with your conclusion as to the decline in the archaeological record and also their lack of Utility use. My alternative hypothesis would be that Pigs were actually used for agricultural purposes. This is a tradition that had faded in large civilisations because of the development of Bronze tools, I'm sure if you check the dates of the bronze age it'll match up to the decline of Pig bones. Pigs were used to till the ground prior to the introduction of bronze tools and the bull plough cart. There was a decline in the need for Pigs now because you could plough your field with bronze and bulls. You would still need Cows for milk and the excess Bulls that you had no use for other than meat you could put to use to plough the fields. Poor Pigs got made redundant by the wealthy that could afford the new tech and gadgets except for within the poor communities who couldn't afford bronze tools and plough carts. You're logic is the equivalent of saying that the decline of Horse/Donkey bones in our era is because we started hating on Horses but we know it's actually down to the invention of Cars, Trains and Planes for transportation. However poor communities still rely on Horses and Donkeys just look at any nomadic communities today. However I agree with your analysis that we have wrongfully inherited this negative sentiment from the Jews. I just thought I should offer some of my agricultural expertise that Pigs were integral to farming. If you leave some pigs enclosed within the field you need to plough for next season and watch how they prepare it for planting. Anyway peace out Bro much love.
@khanG-gq9hc2 жыл бұрын
I think u missed what mufti said. Mufti quotes babylonian tablets showing that pigs were banned from temples and seen as unclean. Its not Mufti's conclusión. Its what historians have said. So the horse point u said makes zero sense.
@MuftiAbuLayth2 жыл бұрын
@Darth Veda youve misunderstood unfortunately, i was simply stating the historical and archeological findings. It's very clear from the records that the swine not only fell out of social cultural flavour in the Near East during the late bronze age, it was often described as filthy by regional cultures of the era and became associated with the underclasses, thereby adding an associative stigma further driving away the upper/elite classes from the animal. It had at the same time also fallen out of favour in Egyptian culture. for further reading please refer to: Evolution of a Taboo by Max Price Pigs, Purity & Patrilineality by Nicole Ruane The Sacred Cow and the Abominable Pig by Marvin Harris that should give you some guidance. #StayBlessed 🙌🏻💯

@@khanG-gq9hc I think you missed what I said too, this is my hypothesis, is a brother not allowed to form his own opinions or express them? I agree with MALM on somethings and I disagree on somethings it doesn't mean I don't understand the point he is making. I didn't hear anything about farming therefore put forth information that may be relevant. What I did hear was that Pigs had only 2 uses "meat for protein and eating trash" therefore I assumed MALM is unaware that actually they're used in farming too. That's all and proceeded to then give an example of how we can use the search data and come up with different causes. Historians also claim everything was a Temple or a Tomb e.g. The Pyramids, do I subscribe to everything that some historians says or do I form my own opinions? Looking at data we can draw multiple conclusions as to what that stats mean or say when you're going back 6,000 years then it all becomes speculation. The Horse example is quite relevant because you don't know how our era will be interpreted 6,000 years from now, that was the point i was making. One thing we do know is that Pigs have a use in agriculture and if u didn't have any tools to till/plough a field you would use Pigs to do it for you. Thanks for the comment Khan saab much love.

From your talking it feels like as if you are disbelieving. Hear me out first, I am not here to mindlessly hate. If I do a summery of what you said it would be, according to you Pigs were getting out of fashion at the time of Moses that's why God (Allah) made pork Haram for the Ummah of prophet Moses . and in respect of the Israelites God (Allah) made it Haram for the Ummah of prophet Muhammad as well. Yes it is a way of thinking but I would say that is a cheap way of thinking. What would you say why was Alcohol made Haram? was Alcohol ever out of fashion ? It is not like that Alcohol was Haram for the Israelites and it was made Haram for Muslims in their respect. It was not the case so why was Alcohol made Haram? I believe no matter how out of fashion something is if it is benefiting for men kind God (Allah) would encourage it and how much fashionable something is if it is harmful for men kind God (Allah) would prohibit it.

Interesting video. I work in a meat locker and go by USDA guidelines for butchering and preparing pork. I could see how some might see it as unclean meat from how pigs lives but it is how pork is processed day which makes it very safe. We've had to some Jews do Kosher killings for beef and to each their own. If they don't want to it pork then that is there choice. But we always say "Over 1 billion people eat pork and they are completely fine. Hopefully Jews and Muslims don't think they will get sick or God will stick them dead if they eat it. Humans are all the same. We all can consume and digest pork, many just choose not to do so.".

The pig eats everything from excrement to other pigs to humans, also the pig doesn't sweat . The uncooked meat contains many parasites , it might be ok for consumption but the wisdom might be coming from those reasons, also in Papua New Guinea cannibals call humans " long pig" as human meats taste like pig. People that eat pork might be fine but are they really healthy? The US is not an example of healthy eating. The US is 3rd larger consumer of pork product , bacon being the favorite product. 5th with the highest cancer cases. is it related? I cannot prove it but I can tell you that processed food like bacon and hotdogs can , even if we proved it will the destroy a big industry.

The picture is different with sterilization..no risks for hydatid cysts etc. But since it had been made unlawful at the time .It's more of obedience n respect ..to abide by the law. And it doesn't anyway matter if pork is not eaten . Therefore what remained haraam remains haraam whether pigs are raised under hygienic n sterile conditions.
