Billy Powell on the piano. Roadie turned band member. Skynyrd's secret weapon and definitely a ride on the Little Richard train.

Billy Powell on the piano, he was a roadie for the band until one day he told them how he would do Freebird and the guys were shocked and said you are no longer a roadie and were now a part of the band. The rest is history.

"Call Me the Breeze" written by the late great JJ Cale, who wrote many kick ass tunes covered by other artists, not the least of which are Cocaine (Eric Clapton and Nazareth), After Midnight (Clapton and the Jerry Garcia Band), Sensitive Kind (Santana & Clapton), Cajun Moon (Herbie Mann), and Crazy Mama (Tom Petty & the Heartbeakers). The best time to play Breeze is when it's one of those first really warm days of spring and you just roll your car windows down and crank it up.

And don't forget, on those piano solos in those Lynyrd Skynyrd songs including in their live gigs, Billy Powell is playing grand pianos. Those take a lot of strength to be that agile on. Because they have such a big sound, the action on it and everything is just more demanding of strength to really do that super lightning fast hammering with that kind of precision, while still keeping the overall feel of it, and staying so incredibly tight with that band. That band was so tight.

I would love to hear you react to their song Railroad Song. At the beginning of this reaction you said oh my God that drummer, well Artimus Pyle does this at some point. It goes back to the Great Depression, but musically it's so fascinating for being so simple and it gets back to your comments about maybe sensing a tiny bit of grunge or garage in it. And of course this was the early seventies. But yeah man it's one of those few bands where there's nothing in their catalog I don't like. I think it's all good. You can't go wrong.
