There are numerous reasons behind athletes and their respective jersey numbers. Sometimes, the number is just a digit, and the player just chose it randomly. Oftentimes, though, jersey numbers have special meanings - like with Muggsy Bogues and the number 14, which, although he only wore it for 2 seasons in the NBA, had deep meaning, given the role it played in his journey to the league.

Back in early 90s when NBA basketball peaked, all the boys in my school loved Jordan/Shaq/Robinson whilst the favourite amongst the girls was Mugsy.

When I played youth basketball in Berlin, Muggsy Bogues was one of a few players I chose number 14 for, the others were Jameer Nelson, Charles Barkley from the Dream Team and Sam Perkins. It's a number not a lot of star players have worn through the years.

I always enjoyed Muggsy. He wasn't good enough to be in the HoF on pure stats and impact, but I hope he has an exhibit in the Hall as an interesting and fun player. He was a good player for several years with Charlotte, being near the league lead in assists and leading the league in assist to turnover ratio multiple times; he may have been thought of as a novelty but he really could play. He also seemed like a cool, happy dude and was really easy to root for even as a Laker fan. My favorite Muggsy highlight wasn't on the court, though. He was on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Conan of course challenged him to a game of 1-on-1. Conan took what looked like a pretty legit turnaround jumper and _Muggsy blocked it._ It wasn't a blindside block like most of the ones he got in the NBA, he just straight up blocked 6'4" Conan on a turnaround. I can't find a clip of it now, but it must be out there somewhere.

Can someone explain to me how he played with the national team straight out of college basketball without being drafted first to a professional league?
