Yes, would love to get my patch going. Struggling with deer and rabbits, squirrels and bears. Living in Montana is a challenge. Thinking 7 ft. fence. I've started several times and the deer got them every time. I now have some wild (bird) starts coming up and am going to fence and see how they do. Appreciate your advice!

Growing up we had a massive raspberry bush that my dad grew on accident. Best part of my Childhood. How he grew it: He made raspberry wine and threw the raspberry innards out in the yard. next he knew he had a bush that took up about a 5th to a 4th of the yard.

Great synopsis and demonstration of what it takes for the home grower to have the best raspberries...but, I always recommend, if at all possible, to plant them with full access to both sides of the trellis. Another tip with your trellis wires is to run a length of braided nylon rope down the whole thing, twisting it a lot of times around the wire....then, when you need to attach the canes you can just open the rope a bit and slip the cane through. This holds them in place well but still allows movement and growth without pinching them off.

WE HAD A LARGE PATCH OF RASPBERRIES in central Wisconsin for 10 yr. that we lived there. Each fall we cut out all canes that bore and thinned out the new canes. We also piled all of our fall leaves to 2 to 3 ft. high in the whole patch. By spring they were compacted from snow and age. We never did anything else except picked abundant crops each year. Nothing better!!

My grandmother had a patch of this size, never done any planed pruning (she pruned them only if they got too large and unsightly), fertilizing of any kind except some fresh compost from time to time, no bug sprays. That patch produced more than we could eat every year for over a decade.

Growing up I use to pick wild raspberries. I never had trouble filling a two gallon pail every day I went out. No one ever pruned them. Never fertilized them. Never built trellises. The plants never disappointed in production. That was over 25 years ago. A few years ago I went back and the plants were still growing just as wild and producing just as well. Naturally the plants had grown outward in significant amounts because that is what they do if they are not controlled. Aside from maintaining your plants for looks and to prevent overgrowth I think just simply making sure they are watered when it is dry and preventing pests from killing them much of the other stuff is not needed once the plants are established.

Your right, I used to fill up on berries deep in the woods. Me and my friends thought it was our personal stash. There must have been hundreds of bushes, and in November we were sure to see plenty of black bears eating our stash, which was fine with us because by late Oct they got sour.

Raspberries grow like weeds. If you want to grow them you just need to plant them. Soon your whole yard will be full of them. No need to do any maintenance. Only need to do these steps if you want absolute maximum harvest.. but you'll get lbs and lbs from just a few plants.. and the following years you will have more than you could ever eat.

I have have been looking for a Internet site, or You Tube video like this to help in my attempt to grow raspberries. It's a good comprehensive video with alot of information , preparing the soil, what kind of soil mix, fertilizer, how to thin / prune, the different varieties, suppliers, and additional info links all in one place. 5 years ago I tried to grow 2 raspberry plants I don't know what kind they were but had terrible results. 3 years ago ,I planted 4 more in a different location and have had slightly better results , but so far this year I'm still frustrated with my attempts, Hopefully this video and your others will help me.. Loved this. Straight to the point. You made this seem do able as I'm not really the green fingered type. Some youtubers impart half the information you did and make it seem twice as complicated. Raspberries, blueberries and lemons move the lymphatic system which is the waste removal system of the body, which works in tandem with the blood system or the nutrient delivery system and if you don't remove waste that's ground zero for chronic illness and disease. So you have probably helped a bucketload of people out with this very well put together video. Thank you brother.

Your video was excellent, thank you so much. I'm going to buy some of the varieties you have and see what happens. I pulled out a plant a few weeks ago that I had put into the ground last year (my first foray into the raspberry) because it was close to a fence my husband wanted to replace. I put it into a 5 gallon bucket as I was going to replant it and within days it was looking so poorly I thought I killed it. It was so disappointing. My husband said it was gone but I refused to give up on it, I cut off all the canes, gave it some water, put it into a shady place and now the little thing is growing back. Oh happy day.

It is a great tool for many things, but make sure you don't spray it on fruiting bodies! Ingestion is not recommended. Several case reports detail severe toxicity associated with ingestion of neem oil. In one case, ingestion of 20ml was sufficient to cause vomiting, convulsions, and toxic encephalopathy.[9] - Mishra, A; Dave, N (2013). Tyriece it’s an ingredient in neem and usually caused by derivatives that are concentrated. azadactrine is the chemical. In some been products it’s concentrated I.e. azamax etc. neem is fine and can be washed off also. Spinosad and bacillus thringesis are other options for bugs like catapillars, aphids and worms etc.

Thanks for this video mate. This video is the one that really got me interested in berries, so much so that I've gotten quite a few plants and made a berry patch for my girlfriend. I watched it a long time ago and always come back to it every now and then.

This is one of the most comprehensive videos I have seen on raspberries. Thanks for the great effort! I am not so sure I understand flurocane vs primocane.

Raspberries produce canes that live for 2 years. During their first year, the canes are called "primocanes". In the case of most raspberry varieties, the primocanes produce only leaves, no berries. The primocanes that survive the winter become "floricanes" during the second year. The floricanes produce flowers and then berries. Then the floricanes die. Some varieties of raspberries are "ever-bearing" -- The (first year) primocanes produce berries in the fall. The primocanes that survive the winter become floricanes, which produce more berries in the summer. So the same cane produces berries in the fall of the first year and in the summer of the second year (and then it dies).

@@kevinbyrne4538 thank you for the explanation! So why did he cut all of the canes down in the Winter?

@@tristaferencik746 -- He planted some "summer bearing" varieties. These varieties fruit on the primocanes during July. Once they finish fruiting, the canes are allowed to continue to grow, but when the canes finally die during the winter, the canes are cut down to the ground. The plant will produce new primocanes in the spring, and those canes will fruit again during the summer.

19:26 It's a good idea, a few years ago I wondered why my 60-year-old neighbor hung CDs from a string near her berry bushes and trees in her tiny yard! Birds would eat her berries and since the wind moves the CDs birds get scared and get bright flashes of light with the sun bouncing off of them. Nice video, thank you for all the great info. We bought 3 different varieties of berries a while back, excited to see how many berries we get. I also saw that amazing trellis video, great job! Your daughter is so cute!
