My berries are in 12 and 15 gal. plastic pots. An inch of water per week works out to ~12 minutes using 4 GPH emitters. My crop is mixed berries. Am I better off watering 2 minutes every day, 4 minutes every other day, or 6 minutes twice a week?

Excellent advice! Planted 3 FallRed everbearing raspberry plants 4 years ago, and now have a full 10’ row of luscious red raspberry plants. The roots are so prolific!! I have to sever roots with a shovel around the perimeter of the bed every year because the roots are so invasive-I found them creeping 6 feet from the bed one year! Just planted yellow Anne everbearing raspberry last year, and what a flavor difference! I don’t know where these have been all my life. Raspberries have been our favorite addition to the garden. Both have small thorns however, but are no problem (and no bleeding) with garden gloves. Picking raspberries doesn’t require gloves because berries aren’t near the heavier thorns on the thicker stems. Gloves are needed when trimming the older stems that have already fruited.

Wow! 3 plants turned into 10 feet?! I was worried I was underplanting, too. That's good to know! And I'll have to try the yellow Anne variety. There's always room to squeeze more plants in! 😈

After a year, and after adding mulch, I find I don’t need irrigation any more, and the brambles are still loaded with fruit. I only purchased ONE Anne raspberry plant 😊, because I now know how prolific these roots are. (I’m a patient girl). I know I’ll have plenty more in no time. New York Zone 7a.

Another great vid! Thanks so much for sharing. I'd love to hear more about how you design and set up your irrigation system. I'm in Ky, Zone 6 and have had success with early brambles but the fall fruits develop drosophila flies. Not only do the flies get into the berries but if I bring the berries into the house I have flies in the house, too. Yuk. You are so right - if you plant 3 plants this year, you'll have a whole row in 3 years with plenty of suckers to share with neighbors.

I have 5 raspberry and 5 blackberry plants coming in 2 weeks. I went with the Polana and Chester varieties. This is one of my first ventures in gardening and I can't wait to see how it goes. My 3 in 1 pH reader is coming today, which will help me choose exactly where I want to plant them and what amendments I need to make to the soil. I cannot wait to harvest these berries from my yard with my sons. Thank you for the tips! I would love to see videos about composting - how to do it, when to buy it instead.
@ReSprout
@ReSprout Жыл бұрын
Compost is super easy! You can just make a pile somewhere in the corner of your yard. That's what I did for many years. Leaves, weeds, kitchen waste, roots, whatever you got. You don't even have to turn it. Eventually nature will take its course and the stuff at the bottom will be beautiful black gold. The only reason I made a compost bin is because I wanted to make a taller pile! 🤣

Oh Donna! Hello! How are you doing? :-) I haven't done it myself but I know that raspberries can be planted in containers. I would definitely encourage you to move to container gardening if you're in a rental and that way you can take it all with you. It takes a little more time to keep everything watered and sometimes landlords are a little weird about lots of plants outside. As with most things rental related, if you keep it tidy and attractive and don't cause anyone to complain the landlords will usually leave you alone.

I found though, that if I stay on top of the picking, the birds aren't as interested in semi-ripe fruit. It looked paltry in the first and second year, but this row I planted is a massive privacy screen now! About 5' tall and 2' deep. Probably TOO deep for harvesting purposes unfortunately. No way can you see through it. The only thing is that they lose their leaves over the winter, so you'll lose that screen then. If it's in an area that you don't use in the winter anyways (like a pool area), then it might not be an issue.

Haha! Yes, I do try my best to make the garden seem as private as possible. Believe it or not, that fence separates the garden from my neighbor's driveway and those raspberries are about 20 feet from a very busy road! As far as placement, you can plant raspberries wide in a "patch" but it might be hard to get in there and harvest. You'll invariably miss some and need to step inside the bed to get to everything, which isn't good for the plants or soil.

Hi Ruby, check with my friend Carlos at @Hablemosdelhuerto. He used to garden in Puerto Rico and is now in Florida. I know he has some wild raspberries where he's at. He may know more. The subtropics are like a different planet to me, up here in 7a! ❄️

I am in 5b and I just bought a Heritage plant. Can I put it in a large grow bag ?

I've never used grow bags, but I guess my only question would be how long does the grow bag last? Raspberries live for many years.

Prayers. LOL! For real though, I try to stay on top of the picking. I found that the animals get more interested when there's lots of fallen fruit and ripe berries hanging around. If the ground is clean and the only thing on the bushes is half-ripe berries, they animals aren't as interested. I use hardware cloth screens on my strawberry beds, but haven't needed to rig up something like that yet for the raspberries. Cross your fingers! It probably helps that the raspberry bed is literally 20 feet from a busy road. I have a lot less animal pressure that way. They're not dumb!

I’m surprised you set up a water irrigation system. I watered in the beginning and then did not have to thereafter any my three heritage raspberry plants I took off so well… the plants had plenty of water… there was no need to give them addl water

Yeah, I found they don't need much water these days. The first year it was good I had it though.
