Impossible not to love him. One of my favorite things to do is watch him wait for Liston to come out for round 7 in their first fight. He celebrates, but there is something so innocent about it. He's joyous because he just became heavyweight champ but he moves like a kid...thrilled. Yes he bragged and talked too much but...every athlete does that now, with far less charm. He was so young, so vital, so talented. He never lost that spark, even with an illness that, in truth kicked in at mid career. He was the Greatest.

A friend of mine told me he installed cable boxes at Ali's house a few years back, and Ali was in a room in a special chair. He walked passed the room and saw him, and asked if he could shake hands with the champ and was told no, but Ali motioned for him to come in anyhow...I wish I had been there! Anyhow, he said Ali can't speak at all- he did get to shake hands with him but then was rushed out of the room and I guess that seemed to irritate the champ... My buddy thanked him and went on his way

Imagine how much greater Ali could've been if he never met Malcom X, and actually served in the Vietnam War. He would've never seen combat of course but his military service would've increased the soldier's morale fighting an unjust war, instead of wasting his time making speeches at college universities and none of those GI's had a choice to sign-up with the draft in full affect other then to become a draft-dodger. However, Ali came back successfully but all those years away from boxing diminished his boxing skills and he came back again in 1980 but that was painful to watch. Ali survived this long given his Parkinson's condition that he's been struggling with to this day and he's been working as an artist and humanitarian, auctioning off his paintings to fight poverty around the world. To date, he just got out of the hospital overcoming a serious case of pneumonia, what a great fighter he is and will always be. Keep fighting, Ali!

Ali would've done the soldiers a lot of good in Vietnam for moral reasons. The troops got nothing but death to think about all day and night.. someone like Ali would've kept their morale up, fighting in this unjust war, the poor gotta do it but the rich and famous don't have to? Hell no... think about other people for a change. I'm saying, Ali could've been much better, health wise, had he never met Malcom X... he wouldn't have seen combat if he joined, that's for sure and he wouldn't have lost a step neither... he could've climbed back into the ring boxing with the troops and still be in his prime and that might've saved him from taking too many punches to the head when he came back to fight professionally.
