No. 1 ranked Muhammad Ali takes on No. 8 ranked Ken Norton. What was said to be the greatest mismatch of all time turned out to be a great upset, the turningpoint in Ken Nortons career and the start of a great trilogy.
-
Their records at the time
Muhammad Ali: 41-1
Ken Norton: 29-1

I was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, and was able to get a ticket to this fight through, I believe, Special Services at the base. I sat in the first row of the elevated seats - a fantastic view - and was right next to the tunnel where the boxers entered and exited the ring. What a great memory. I still have the ticket stub. Unbelievable that it will be 50 years ago in a few months.

Norton had a very unorthodox style but it was very effective. He paced himself well in the fight and never allowed himself to be outboxed. Norton had fast hands and was quick around the ring. He was an intelligent fighter, who kept the initiative during the entire fight.

I think his unorthodox fighting threw Ali off. Norton had fast hands but always seemed to lag with both footwork and hands. I noticed he would throw punches, but it seemed like his return was slightly slow. The same thing happened with his footwork; his back foot seemed to be slow. I was honestly surprised that Ali didn't stick with his usual dancing style. The rounds where he went to his dancing style he actually won.

@MAN UTD Soccer is NOT a great Sport. 22 weaklings standing around in a meadow. Sometimes two or three run around a bit. :) :-) Boxing heavyweight champions are the most famous athletes of mankind. And earn ten times more money than the most famous footballers. Footballers have thin arms, no chests and narrow shoulders. Everything in the feet. A ridiculous shit sport. Boxing is big all over the world, Ali, Frazier, Norton are known up to the last jungle in Africa and all over the world. And now you go to toillet and cry. :)

It's a virtual certainty that Ali's jaw was broken sometime prior to round eight. Listen to Howard Cosell in round eight talking about how Ali's face does not appear normal, how he speculates about a fractured tooth. Ali said himself that his faster ‘prime’ couldn’t compete in his post-Vietnam era of boxing against Frazier and the like because he just wasn’t physically as strong and wasn’t as smart as a boxer. He relied wholly on athleticism in the 60s kind like Roy. But Ali had great fight IQ which led him to the greatness in the 70s and some favourable judges and ring ropes unlike Roy who had the literal opposite at the start and late in his career.

Ken Norton was a genuine man, a REAL man, a former marine and a great boxer who said " I never wanted to hurt anyone". A class act. What a treat to go back and see this greatest era of the Heavyweights in the 70's. Frazier,Ali, Foreman, Norton, Holmes,,,these were the real champions.Great days these were when Cosell and Wide world of sports showed these live classic fights.

Well, you are either an Ali hater or you get too influenced by the biased commentators in the Ali Norton 3 fight. Norton didin't win more than 3 or 4 rounds decisively. If you want to dethrone the champ, you need to be more persuasive than that. I think that Ali won the second bout by almost a landslide, the third one by at lest 2 rounds.

I had very little respect for Muhammad Ali before this fight. Ali was too pretty and boxing is an ugly sport. But I remember watching the rebroadcast of this fight and seeing Ali take punch after punch on his broken jaw. Ken Norton was not a soft puncher either! The fact that Ali lost this fight was not too surprising considering he fought much of it with a broken jaw. But the fact that he took so much pain made me respect him like no other boxer before or since. Ali could have quit the fight but he took everything Norton had to give. Ali could have joined the army and played around at being a soldier like Joe Louis did, but he chose to take abuse and lose millions of dollars and the championship in defence of his beliefs. Muhammad Ali had guts. RIP Muhammad Ali

While I respected Ali's boxing skills. I never liked Ali as a man. I didn't like his trash talk or his disrespect of other great fighters, who had much more class outside of the ring, in particular Joe Frazier. While at the time it felt good that Norton had silenced him, it did however give me great respect for Ali that he fought bravely on in what must have been great pain and I actually felt sorry for him.

I love honesty, truth...and you spoke a lot, friend. I am cool with folks who don't like the talking, and I hate it in most every instance, but boxing is an individual sport, so I have less problem with a guy not letting teammates down, etc. Plus, he literally took a page out of Pro Wrestler Gorgeous George's book, hell stole his book, more like it. He saw him, and all the bragging, arrogance, and said, "That man needs a whuppin'", but he realized it was bringing in paying customers to see him WHUPPED OR WIN, either way, and said, "Hmmm...he's not as dumb as he looks". I agree on the Frazier speak, though. That got mean. But the thing I try and explain is if you are in his shoes, unwittingly or not, Joe was holding HIS Title, never lost in the ring, before the ruling bodies wrongfully stripped his title, without even a court case. The establishment had told them, "Go ahead, we're gonna break him anyway in court", in so many words, I am guessing. We never did see his prime, just the beginnings of it, up til 1967. Three and a half years. Hey, he walked his talk, about the draft, however everyone feels about that. All he ever WANTED was to be Heavyweight Champeen, most thought he'd only be a light heavy. He gave up EASY Joe Louis duty (boxing exhibitions for the army) in Viet Nam for his beliefs, paid the price, and ultimately won in the Supreme Court level, unanimously. So nobody ever saw him at his best, and brother, the Ali vs. Cleveland Williams, Zora Foley, mid sixties, etc...was astoundingly good. But I apologize, I mostly came to build a bridge like I try to do when I see folks maybe with a different viewpoint in some fundamental ways than my own, and they come HONEST, without piss and vinegar, and contribute. MUCH APPRECIATED. I am guessing from watching and Cosell and the Dr. saying stuff, that indeed he had the tooth and jaw break before round 8, no earlier than the 3rd (I was watching, as folks say Rd 2, but saw no special treatments in the corner), and Ali definitely holds hand high, clinches on ropes more, in round 8.

Many times I've witnessed Cosell yakking away and missing critical moments of fights. Then he sort of wakes up when the crowd responds, and says 'it was a right' when it was clearly a left, or vice versa. I also took exception to his denigration of fighters when they were in situations where they were slugging it out. He would criticize them for being 'completely without boxing skills', apparently not understanding in the least the myriad forces that can create that sort of situation, i.e., the result of absorbing blows over many rounds, fatigue, psychological factors, etc. Cosell was a self-aggrandizing jerk.
