Will Durant did feature the Islamic Golden Age in the same book this excerpt is from (Story of Civilization: Age of Faith). He covers the history of the spread of Islam in the near east, north africa and iberia and then goes onto discuss Avicenna, Averroes and many other muslim philosophers and mystics from that era. I think the two faiths had very contrasting needs : one had to figure a way to peacefully defuse an empire, and the other had to create unity and discipline out of disorder... Therefore, Allah compensated them for the losses they incurred because they severed ties with idolators, by the Jizyah they earned from the People of the Book.' and.. "This honorable Ayah was revealed with the order to fight the People of the Book, after the pagans were defeated, the people entered Allah's religion in large numbers, and the Arabian Peninsula was secured under the Muslims' control. Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans and called the people to Jihad announcing his intent and destination. Durant made some accurate observations about Arab life preIslam. Made some basic errors a Muslim child would not make (ex. Kaaba) and in some cases made flat out lies (raids from Madina). Little knowledge is dangerous, for some ppl will take Mr. Durant as an impartial authority when he is not. At best we can say he made these mistakes unwillingly, unintentionally. I found his elequence almost tranquilizing 😁 but not enough to let lies slide unnoticed.

Good comment. I am the person who created the thumbnail. It was only after then fact that I put "this is not Mohammad" on the thumbnail. It wasn't a response to "the perpetual hatred and violence of Islam", it was because I was receiving comments that it wasn't an accurate representation and that it was blasphemous to represent Mohammad. I put "this is not Mohammad" because I was tired of addressing those comments. On a separate line of thought, I do stay away from exploring (criticizing) the Muslim faith because it's not worth possibly making me or my family a target of violence. If one blasphemes Jesus, one is not very likely to be killed for that. Not so very true of islam. I discovered the Durant’s by accident while in college, nearly 60 years ago. I am rereading their epic “Story of Civilization” today. I have noticed this time around their strong attention given to French events as compared wirth the English speaking world. It is customary in our present to disparage or treat rudely virtually anything Roman, English or American. The present imbalance is not totally dissimilar to that between Christianity and islam.
