In this short video I provide a possible explanation for the curious story of the running rock and water that couldn't be defiled- an explanation which builds on the well known fact that Muhammad was influenced by numerous, contemporary traditions. “Moses got water from a rock at the beginning and end of the wilderness wanderings (Exod. 17:1-7; Num. 20:2-13), and this apparently was the origin of a Jewish legend that a rock traveled with the people...” (Morris, L. (1985). 1 Corinthians: an introduction and commentary (Vol. 7, p. 140). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.) “[there was a] “rock” from which the Israelites drank and which, according to Jewish tradition, followed Israel on its wanderings.” (cf. Ps.-Philo Bib. Ant. 10.7; Philo Leg. all. 2.86)(Barton, S. C. (2003). 1 Corinthians. In J. D. G. Dunn & J. W. Rogerson (Eds.), Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible (p. 1334). Grand Rapids, MI; Cambridge, U.K.: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company.) “According to the exegetical tradition, the answer to the natural question of what the Israelites had done for water between those times was that “the rock of Exodus 17 and the rock of Numbers 20 are one and the same. Hence, this rock must have accompanied the Israelites through their journey.” (Ciampa, R. E., & Rosner, B. S. (2007). 1 Corinthians. In Commentary on the New Testament use of the Old Testament (p. 724). Grand Rapids, MI; Nottingham, UK: Baker Academic; Apollos.) “Then, behold, Israel sang the thanksgiving of this song, at the time that the well which had been hidden was restored to them through the merit of Miriam: Spring up, O well, spring up, O well ! sang they to it, and it sprang up: the well which the fathers of the world, Abraham Izhak, and Jakob digged: the princes who were of old digged it, the chiefs of the people: Mosheh and Aharon, the scribes of Israel, found it with their rods; and from the desert it was given to them for a gift. And from thence it was given to them in Mattana; turning, it went up with them to the high mountains, and from the high mountains it went down with them to the hills surrounding all the camp of Israel, and giving them drink, every one at the door of his tent. And from the high mountains it descended with them to the lower hills, but was hidden from them on the borders of Moab, at the summit of the hill looking toward Bethjeshimon, because there they neglected the words of the Law.” -Targum Pseudo Jonathan, Numbers 21:17-20 www.sefaria.org/Targum_Jonathan_on_Numbers.21.20?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en “Did not the well of Miriam accompany them in the desert and supply them with more than their fill of fish?” -Midrash Sifre; www.sefaria.org/Sifrei_Bamidbar.95.1?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en Said Rab, “A movable well...would be Miriam’s well.” -b. Shabb. 2:7, I.16.A (Neusner, J. (2011). The Babylonian Talmud: A Translation and Commentary (Vol. 2, p. 147). Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers.) “Now he led his people out into the wilderness; for forty years he rained down for them bread from heaven and brought quail to them from the sea and brought forth a well of water to follow them.” -Pseudo-Philo 10.7 (Charlesworth, J. H. (1985). The Old Testament pseudepigrapha and the New Testament: Expansions of the “Old Testament” and Legends, Wisdom, and Philosophical Literature, Prayers, Psalms and Odes, Fragments of Lost Judeo-Hellenistic Works (Vol. 2, p. 317). New Haven; London: Yale University Press.) “And it [the water] followed them in the wilderness forty years and went up to the mountain with them and went down into the plains.” -Pseudo-Philo 11.15 (Charlesworth, J. H. (1985). The Old Testament pseudepigrapha and the New Testament: Expansions of the “Old Testament” and Legends, Wisdom, and Philosophical Literature, Prayers, Psalms and Odes, Fragments of Lost Judeo-Hellenistic Works (Vol. 2, p. 319). New Haven; London: Yale University Press.) “For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” -1 Co 10:1-4 “Since the incident of the rock which produced water marked the beginning of Israel’s wilderness wanderings (Ex. 17:1-7) and happened again near the ending of their wanderings (Num. 20:1-13), Paul concluded that Christ accompanied them. Christ too was the source of supernatural water for the Corinthians (cf. John 4:10-14).” Lowery, D. K. (1985). 1 Corinthians. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 526). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books. “Specifically, Paul spoke of the manna that God provided to Israel for forty years (Exod. 16:12-35), and the water he provided them at least twice (Exod. 17:6; Num. 20:11). A spiritual rock, one miraculously provided by the Spirit and empowering the people, accompanied them in the sense that water-giving rocks appeared on at least these two occasions. John explained that the manna foreshadowed Christ (John 6:31-58). Here, Paul symbolically connected Christ and the water-giving rock. The rock was Christ.” -Pratt, R. L., Jr. (2000). I & II Corinthians (Vol. 7, p. 162). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers. “Moses got water from a rock at the beginning and end of the wilderness wanderings (Exod. 17:1-7; Num. 20:2-13), and this apparently was the origin of a Jewish legend that a rock travelled with the people. Paul may have had this legend at the back of his mind, but he does not refer to it. He refers to Christ and sees him as following the Israelites and continually giving them drink. He transfers to Christ the title, ‘the Rock’, used of Yahweh (Deut. 32:15; Ps. 18:2, etc.), a transfer that is significant for Christology...” (Morris, L. (1985). 1 Corinthians: an introduction and commentary (Vol. 7, p. 140). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.) “...the story can also be read as an allegory of Christ, as the same Apostle does read it: ‘but the rock was Christ.’” -Augustine of Hippo. (1952). The City of God, Books VIII-XVI. (H. Dressler, Ed., G. G. Walsh & G. Monahan, Trans.) (Vol. 14, p. 331). Washington, DC: The Catholic University of America Press. “For our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized in Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and did all eat the same spiritual meat, and did all drink the same spiritual drink.” -Ambrose of Milan. Another possible connection between the Jewish rock/well and the bizarre Hadith is Moses striking the rock on both stories.

@Tippiebear _"I don’t know why these narrations are in Hadith, never heard of a reason. Greetings, I am a born again christian, having converted since August last year however it is not something I was and am able to convey to my fundamentalist Muslim family. I have just recently come back from Hajj in Saudi Arabia which I had no say in the matter. I must say, everything I had seen and experienced in Mecca and Medina was incredibly wrong and perverse. The circling of the Kaaba 7 times, the Saafa crossing which was obligatory, having to wear a robe whilst naked in the aeroplane, and I too had to shave my head in the end. It was all very ritualistic and dare I say, pagan like. We had to raise our palms towards the doors of the Kaaba in homage to Allah, and getting close to the actual cube was nothing short of a death sentence as people were very fanatical in trying to touch and kiss the walls and stone and would barge people out of the way. I couldn't help but think of your videos on the matter of Hagar and Abraham never actually going to the desolate wasteland of Arabia as everything was just barren mountain upon mountain. It was also very coincidental that many prophetic events seem to all happen in this piece of land. In Medina, the prophets grave was enclosed by golden gates which people massed by the thousands to pass by and raise their hands as they did the Kaaba. What was also staggering is the obligation to say a greetings and prayer for him. People had also kneeled down and even prayed to it outside. It completely blows the idea that Mohammed had always wanted people to view him as nothing more than a fellow human. A tale I heard was that the reason why the mosques there glow green at night is because it was the favourite colour of the prophet and he had also said that if no mosque displayed such a colour, calamity would ensue. It is far more clear that all he had said was nothing more than ramblings from a madman. Although I had converted long before coming accross you and David Wood, I must convey my thanks to your work. You have opened my eyes to see a greater picture of folly presented by the father of Islam with your rationale and Biblical knowledge and logic. You are doing wonders. Though I may have to live a secret life as a Christian, all that I have learnt and come across has been life saving and I've been all the better for it. If you are reading this, I'd like to put a recommendation for you to make a video on so-called miracles that allegedly prove Islam is true. By that I mean the ones such as the "Jinns driving your vehicle for you by the mountain pass" which I had also seen and then found out to be nothing more than a gravitational optical illusion. And once again, thank you and God bless

That story about the rock running off with Moses' clothes sounds like another example of this.

This is my best guess on this topic. And I present it as such. I think that the unique elements of a rock that can move and water that can't be defiled showing up in both sources may not be a coincidence. There are other parallels as well, but I kept this one short.

Can you make a video explaining Paul's words on head-coverings for women? My community requires women to obey Paul's statements about this and therefore they cover their heads whenever they gather for church. However, there are other evangelical churches who do not practice head-covering. I wonder what Western Christians teach to justify that head-coverings are not necessary for women(I am a Brethren Christian from India).

FYI, Muslims pray *TO* Muhammad daily. Fourth Rak`ah This is identical to the third rak`ah. After the second prostration resume the kneeling position, and recite the Tashahhud. Completion After reciting the Tashahhud of the final rak`ah, recite the Taslim (Salutation) which completes your prayer: Assalaamu `alayka ayyuhan nabiyyu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh Assalamu `alaynaa wa `alaa `ibaadillaahis saaliheen Assalamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh Peace *be upon you, O Prophet,* and God’s mercy and blessing. Peace be upon us, and upon the righteous servants of God. Peace be upon you [all], and God’s mercy and blessing. Thereafter (optionally) say Takbir three times. When they say *"be",* it is present tense and the word *"you"* is directly *TO* Muhammad.

On the last frame with the symbolised version of what I suppose would be Muhammad. (You likely get why I have phrased this first sentence the way I have!). Something (likely connected to my dodgy vision) sticks out to me. The lettering appears to be 'PBUM'. It is quite funny given that as I am from the UK. The UK meaning of the final three letters, does not seem to be the same meaning that many people from USA give to it. The UK meaning seems amusingly fitting with some things. This video just proves your pure ignorance to the matter Imam al-Khattabi said that it should not be understood that the companions were not the ones who used to throw dead dogs or menstrual clothes into the well of Buda`ah. The companions were the cleanest ever people. It is not even accepted that non-Muslim people of that time used to do that. (Ma`alim al-Sunan, 1/37) Further, it was the heavy rain that throw these things into the well of Buda`ah; the well itself is pure. Scholars held that much water is not affected by little impurities according to the hadith which states if the water reaches two qullahs in volume, it will not become impure due to impurities. The exact quantity of the qullah is a controversial issue. Several estimates were given to this quantity. One opinion holds that the qullah is equivalent to 375 milliliters. Of course, the well of Buda`ah is so large that it wouldn’t be impure if there was such filth in it. Moreover, the hadith is talking about ablution and nothing more since Muslims have to purify themselves before the five daily prayers. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) never claimed that Muslims can drink impure water. Imam al-Tahawi said that the well of Buda`ah was like a rive leading to a garden. This means that the water is always running and it is not stagnant. Therefore, the Prophet declared it to be a pure source of water. Other scholars maintained that when the Prophet said: “Water is pure”, he was referring to the water of the well of Buda`ah. This means that the Prophet was confirming the purity of this well as it is too large to be contaminated by the impurities that were thrown into it by the heavy rain.

Islam Critiqued This story is awful but You know what’s even worse? That Muslims would accept these narrations. In my ministry with Muslim women I’ve had ladies that go so far as to say that this is the best thing that could happen to a girl because she will not have to worry about finding a good husband when she gets older. Others disregard hadiths like the one you quoted saying that they are taken out of context...in 8 years they’ve never provided the “correct” context though...others are in denial and say that these stories are false. The rock Moses got water from was flintstone, which normally, when struck, would make a spark of fire. It was a miracle that water instead came forth, akin to turning water to wine. The same CHRIST WHO turned the water to wine, after earlier manifesting HIMSELF in exchanging plentious water for a flame causing spark, is HE WHO earlier yet appeared to Moses in the bush manifested as a burning uttering a voice without consuming the bush. HE is the SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS with healing in HIS wings rising above the cross that HIS passion turned into the tree of life, once guarded by unapproachable light. Those sanctified by HIS blood conveyed through wine turned into HIS blood, in life begun in water baptism, will not fair ill in the final conflagration at HIS return, when the glory of CHRIST's face sets the universe on fire, and all are tried therein. Many things move in a correct order and priority through consistent strings of mysteries and revelations. Again, another great video.
