She was my grandfather's cousin, perhaps a very close one. Her real name was Sahibzadi Mumtazullah Khan, born in Rampur, in an aristocrat family. A very strong character and bold, my grandmother.

I am listening to this on the eve of Independence day, Faiz is more relevant today than ever. Zohra Begum has captured the spirit of this poem which is usually lost when professional singers sing. Covering pain with silk & fur does not make it go away.

Madam Noor Jahan's rendition of Faiz's poetry is immortal. But Zohra Sehgal's recitation is equally touching. And in these uncertain COVID times, Faiz sounds almost clairvoyant. Notice how Zohra changes the tone of the first line - at the very end. Wow, what an artist. Like all great magicians, she saves the best for the very end!
