That's the key point! Mulan goes to the military environment and fights to save her family. That's it. Not once in the 1998 version she thinks of fame, not once she tries to prove her might or worth. Once the war is over, she simply goes back to her family. I loathe how this motive was erased in the live action remake.

And even if she does try to prove her worth in this movie, it's to herself, her family, and no one else. Society may have changed as a result of her success, but that was never her intention. All she wanted was to save China so she could go home.
@drakke125Channel

in the live action, she 'refuses' but then accepts the rewards for the physical materialism because ...that's what people want in the end in reality, which ruined the movie. Making a woman the 'only' qi user is also unrealistic, china has an entire history of qi users dominated by men but also there's PLENTY of female warriors who have done it as well, nowhere in the original source material in poetry has mulan been referenced to be a 'qi user'. The popularity of using 'qi' is in what I'd call 'chinese light/fantasy novels' like journey to the west. Disney made everything worse when they went progressive SJW woke , starting with Maleficent and Frozen and attacking the nuclear family and 'heteronormativity" , a new term made up completely by the liberal left also. The black populations suffered largely from father-less families and Black Lives Matter wishes to destroy the nuclear family as mentioned on their website. Everything is backwards today.

During the time period Mulan is set in, almost every country judged a woman's value on whether or not should could successfully marry and have kids. It's awful, but that's how things were. That being said, setting it in that time makes the message of the movie ring even louder. In spite of her entire society telling her "your a babymaker, get used to it" she manages to achieve a level recognition that few men, even ones born into status and power, could ever hope to achieve. And she did it by being clever, determined, and with the help of the few people willing to follow her lead and believe she'd pull them through. She didn't set out to be a hero, she just wanted her father to be safe, yet by the end if all her name is known by everyone in China. Still love this movie.

During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family. This is further backed up by how she's sitting at the foot of the statue before the sequence begins.

Mulan's dog is called Little Brother because in the original legend, Mulan had a younger brother but he wasn't old enough to fight hence why Mulan went instead (after having a sword duel with her father which she won). Little Brother was designed and voiced by Chris Sanders who later direct Lilo and Stitch (and voice Stitch).

What's wrong with central premise of the movie? Like a woman struggling in a sexist culture. Wanting to live in a way that's not allowed, but ultimately doing it anyway, mostly to protect her dad. Struggling at first but ultimately becoming better through hard work and training. Then ultimately being recognized and accepted. How is that a bad premise???
@robertg420
@robertg420 Жыл бұрын
@@NaliTikva I should have said underlying theme not central premise, I used the wrong term. In my opinion Mulan is a feminist piece championing the masculinization of women in the west told through a story set in the east. Ironically enough, in the real world today both sides are experiencing their own crisis of gender and relationships.

Mulan is a defining movie for a generation! Asking anyone I know from my age group and they have so many positive things to say about this movie. I mean, it's obviously not perfect and there are issues, but it brought something special. And several friends of mine who are women seem to especially remember it fondly. I think Mulan really set a bar in terms of a more "modern" movie in a lot of ways, and was a forerunner of upcoming changes we would see continue to be expanded upon even now..... Chuck Jones have commented on that "June Foray isn't the female Mel Blanc, Mel Blanc is the male June Foray." when it comes to her talent as a voice actor. She passed away in 2017 nearly two months before her 100:th birthday (which was a shame).

I'll admit it; when I was young I used to crush on the Disney princesses all the time. I see no reason it shouldn't work the other way around. So...yeah, no style points deducted in my opinion. If you want to crush on Shang who am I to say you shouldn't? More power to you.

There's something that's not acknowledged about this time period which I think should be addressed. Yes, women were basically servants of their husbands and expected to bear children and run their homes. But men, ALL men, no matter how big or small or inclined to war they were, were the servants of their Emperor and were expected to bear arms, fight and die en masse. NOBODY was free back then. That's why Mulan's father ends up in the situation he does. His wife never had a son to replace him and his duties as a man never expired. He would most likely be among the first to die and the Empire would think nothing more of it than a battle statistic.

In real life the matchmaker doesnt exist. But its relatable to the history since in the old time asian parents like to match their kid with other kid through their parents. Dragon as a companion will be considered direspectful to chinese culture since in china dragon potrays as big, powerful and oftenly potrays the emperor not like stupid tiny lizard with weird accent. And also the hair cutting scene its just no for me, in ancient china men and woman both have long hair but styled in a different ways woman usually had like a comb and men always made a bun. Hair is precious if u cut your hair it means a mourning and a sign of disgrace toward a family. By the way for an information : disney just adapt the story from china from the legendary poem called BALLAD OF MULAN there is no dragon , love interest and etc. And if you want to see more accurate mulan story its on chinese remake of "mulan 2009 rise of a warrior" followed by the live action 2020

Ok so I don't want to be negative, but the dubbing of Mulan in english isn't that good IMO. I haven't watched the movie in english entirely myself, because I'm not english, but from the few moments I've listened to in this reaction it's not very great IMO, especially in comparison with the voice I'm used to (french). The biggest example to me is at 26:50. It sounds and feels both fake and bland, which is extremely sad since this is such an impactful moment. Idk in french I feel the voice is much much more impactful, and here not that much. There are other examples but I haven't written the timestamps so yeah...

If a woman was not able to be married back then they became a burden on the family best case scenario the woman would be in charge of taking care of the parents as they aged while the more successful siblings brought wealth and acclaim to the family name. Asian cultures have a common similarity where the group is valued over the individual whether it is the family, community, or nation. Thus if a individual or small group of people needs to be screwed over so that the family, community, nation can remain stable and prosperous then it will be done. But not only will it be done they would expect said people to volunteer to be screwed over as their willing sacrifice for the group would bring the family acclaim. Everyone has a role and if one fails or brings infamy to the family enough they would be shunned and excommunicated by the community which is basically a long drawn out death sentence back then. Its basically the opposite of what people see in western culture that tends to be about personal liberation and individual freedom.

Oh boy, Sophie! I could make a long list on my animated crushes! In China and Asia in general women were seen as second-class citizens, home makers, having babies and pleasing the man of the household. Feminist nightmare indeed!

Being too skinny can be a sign of malnourishment. In cultures like in Africa to this day, a fat woman = a well fed woman = she's being well fed and take care of by a guy who can afford to feed her that well. Thinness also means too skinny and not wide enough hips for good childbirth. It's not wrong at all, its just different. The problem is how this idea is portrayed and received by the audience in movies. Honestly being skinny isn't bad, all you have to do is fatten them up and you're good. A woman who is unable to cook is not a problem either. Anyone can learn if they want to and nor should they be expected to do everything. But in terms of being practical here? Its best to marry someone with skills than none. Or you will suffer. That's the harsh truth in life. Women want someone who is better than them in every way. Women who do not do this, can only stay happy for so long. Money is a common problem that leads to divorce as they say. back then, divorce simply wasn't 'a thing' around the world until the West told them to 'liberate' themselves from the patriarchy. Today, men are scared of dating women who are abusive or dishonest or have no motivation to make the proper effort in a relationship, as well as being petty or demanding in a relationship. Society is more likely to side with the woman based on a false story (MeToo movement) than the guy, and this is seen in Marriage court sessions where the system is rigged against the man. Women on average get up to 20% less penalty than men for the same crime. There are feminists who lie about female taxes and wage gap and promote 'slut pride' . There are feminists who think the best way to fight sexual abuse/assault is by being naked in public and allowing people to molest them. There are feminists who have made vagina cookies, charge more money to male customers and then blaming men for why their businesses fail and go bankrupt. No one likes vegans and feminists these days. There are more and more videos of vegans who decided to be brave and try meat and tell the world they never felt so healthy and energized in their life. There are vegans forcing their pets vegetarian diets. Their pets got physically sick because of it. If you want humanity to continue to exist, you need the best traits even if physical. We are taught looking for physical traits is 'short sighted'. What is truly short sighted, is marrying people for the wrong reasons. You may be offended but if you marry someone with bad genes or birth defects or genetic issues in their bloodline, you have a greater chance of passing that onto your offspring. And the cycle continues onward. In the animal kingdom and through natural and sexual selection, only the best survive and mate. Without that, you have a species that will collapse from the inside in no time.

1) Matchmaker is not a 'real' job or profession in china. Matchmaking does exist in most of the world in India and Asian countries and Africa. Can't speak for Europe and NA + SA. Matchmaking is a bit different between China and Japan though. In China and Japan, they do share similarities where families try to pair with strong stable families, which is indirectly (this is a stretch logic I'm making) to the marriages in royalty which sometimes involves incest because royalty, through some logic, has the best genes because they have the healthiest and most educated minds and bodies, so evolution demands best survival of the fittest through marriage through superior blood/genes. I mean...that's just nature. e.e nah I kid lol 2) No one wants an obedient wife. That's boring as hell and demeaning. Although these days I think that message needs to return cuz women tend to abuse men more than the other way around right now and it's getting out of hand with female way of thinking (left liberalism) today. There's social experiments where society does nothing if a man is abused in public by a woman, but people rush to the woman's defense if a guy even verbally abuses/yells at the woman (fake couple for experiment). Women also get an average of up to 20% less penalty than men for the same crime. We don't have a patriarchy problem, we have a matriarchy problem that worships women, not men actually. You are simply taught to be a feminist through media and your progressive school and friends. Women are also masters of psychology and psychological warfare. Liberalism and women dominate literally every field and profession today in education, politics/management, medicine and psychology and social work, medicine, and law, and even journalism or nonprofits. Today much of complaints about sports and news and politics and video games and even comic books and Olympics is because of SJW woke culture dominated by mostly white feminists/liberals. None of this SJW and gender sexuality crap existed when I was a kid in the 90s and 'that' was the norm. Everything's gotten worse, morals and gender taboos are blurred and being wiped out by the left to normalize new ideas that were taboos for a reason. We've come a long way as a society, but we're also going backwards and regressing at the same time. Medicine makes people stay alive as long as possible which does nothing. Medicine is incapable of making old people get better, it just keeps them alive while dealing with pain and diseases that only get worse over time. The medical costs skyrocket as time goes on. People really shouldn't be living this long, nor is the human body meant to be opened up through surgery too many times as organ transplants only extend your life by MAYBE 3-7 years on average. All you're doing is delaying the inevitable. People are deathly scared of death and illness that they try to cheat death. People have lost their spirituality and understanding of the world, are focus only on artificial things like misunderstood emotions and feelings that are based on half truths and fear or misunderstandings. 3) In older and different cultures, there's always been this sexism toward women because they assume the worst if women take control. And funnily enough, history repeats itself. Women today in western countries, have proved through studies that female led households are more likely than male led and hetero couple households to fall into poverty spells, and are least likely and are the slowest to get out of poverty spells. This is partially because women are less likely to overwork themselves like men do, and are more likely to take care of their mental health unlike men, they make less rash decisions and risks as men do, so they avoid unnecessary risks to their health and safety while men do stupid things like drink too much and fall to drugs/alcohol or other. There are more men who die than women for different reasons like through serving in the army, and there are far more men who are homeless than women. The ratio of men's homeless shelters to women shelters is like the ratio of mens to women's clothing in any given store. 10 to 1 or worse sometimes. There's a documentary called Self-Made Man, a lesbian celebrity disguised herself as a man to see what it was like. She discovered women have all the power in dating and got severe depression being a man. I highly recommend watching the documentary the Red Pill. Liberal Progressive Democrat author, Jonathan Haidt, also wrote a book called The Righteous Mind, (which I highly recommend everyone to read) how good people are divided in politics and religion. One of the biggest reasons why liberals/democrats lose in elections, is because they fail to understand and LISTEN to their opponents. Yourmorals.org, which he and other Ivy league graduates have created, has data that shows people who are most liberal, have the most narrow morals, while those who are conservative, have the highest moral diversity. It's also been proven conservatives and libertarians are able to understand/predict the liberal views and ways of thinking, but the opposite does not hold. Women also have been studied of their voting patterns. Women age 18-25 vote the most extreme left, as you move up and up to the next age group for women, their political leanings go toward the center. In other words, women vote more conservative as they get older. Men vary between left and right. Majority of Trump's voterbase is mostly in the middle including those left and right of center. Those who voted for Hillary Clinton, were an overwhelming majority in the bottom left of the political spectrum quadrant, further proving the most narrow minded people who think in absolutes like the Siths /Dark Jedi in Star Wars, and through Haidt's book, are the one of the two groups who are more likely to use humiliation tactics and psychology to shame /cancel people out from a group, while the other group uses violence/aggression to establish a hierarchy to maintain order and stability. Today, we see this through cancel culture which stems from the left liberals, not the right conservatives. 90% of the violence and crimes are from Democrat left like Black Lives Matter and Antifa. Majority of criminals vote Democrat. FACT Majority of the rich elites are Democrats. FACT Majority of the mainstream news media are Democrat voters or those who hold favorable Democrat views. Bullying went up by 14% in schools during and after the 2016 election Trump won. There's been hundreds of videos of people being nasty to Trump supporters. A black man was shot dead in broad daylight in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dead silence from news media. Why? Because he was a Trump supporter. No outrage from news or activist groups or even the BLM. Not to mention not a single penny from BLM was used to help the black community. Literally no one can tell you or give you proof they did anything. Democrats give you sweet honey words like 'free college/free insurance/free this and that/ free healthcare'. Illegal migrants should have free everything. Someone has to pay for all that. And that's on the backs of taxpayers. Here's another saying: Socialists are generous with other people's money. The most emotional and entitled people are those on the extreme left. Even moderate democrats are treated as 'right wing extremeists' just for not conforming the left perfectly. Those who 'come out' as conservative when they used to be Democrat or liberal, have testified they got much worse lashback than coming out as LGBT. For proof, go to the WalkAway campaign group on facebook, which the news media has lied about being just 'russian bots' like they do with everything they hate.
