As a woman, I'm so tired of this woman > man mentality in Hollywood. The thing that I loved most about the original Mulan was that they didn't try to make her overly special. She was a commoner who set out to save her father. She wasn't seeking glory, she wasn't even trying to be a great warrior, she was just trying to survive. But because she was a woman, she had a different perspective to offer that turned out to be just as valuable as her fellow men. But they never put down the man's perspective either. It was the fact that men and women are more powerful working together. How can you watch the original and not understand how powerful that message is? It's like the makers of this mess were not even remotely interested in honoring the original movie.

Past Mulan had very relatable flaws. She has clumsy, lazy, and physically weak. She worked her ass off to be athletic and strong, she learned discipline and commitment to overcome her flaws. That's a great role model.

Agree. She made the Emperor Bow to her. A symbol of honour nobody else would get just like that. He even mentioned the "bad" things she did (disguised as a man, go to the military, destroying parts of his castle) but finishes it with "and you saved us all" giving the idea that she made "wrong" (In the eyes of others) decisions for the right goal.

That's what made us root for her. The fact that she had climbed a difficult path and "reached the summit" makes it feel worthy of emotion. In this remake,she just has no emotional impact. A pile of lumber has more emotion.

@sleepyrowlet 4 жыл бұрын
So many people backed up and supported this movie saying that this live-action is basically based on Chinese cinema cultures with all the kungfu martial arts that were over the top. hence there are Chi superpowers and all. But clearly, they can't even get what makes the classic Mulan so special to begin with, what makes her as a grounded human being that persevered her strength and confidence despite her identity as a woman without the Chi powers. :|

Yes it is a different adaptation. But little girls will probably look up to her anyways. Who doesn't want to have superpowers as a kid? And if this is their first time watching Mulan, then this will be Mulan for them. Just like you have a different idea from the other Mulan you watched before. Maybe it is not what you wanted but it isn't bad either.
@sleepyrowlet
@sleepyrowlet 4 жыл бұрын
@@juanmenjivar28 Well if I have a kid, I will tell them to watch the classic one instead. Besides, I saw some parents were commenting that their kids were bored watching this for the first time and when they changed to watch the original animated version, they are liking it more because of course it's animation and there are more comedic reliefs as well with Mushu and the sing alongs too. This live-action is a very sombre and a bleak adaptation which I felt that people won't like it at this current time as well because of all the pandemic things that's going on everywhere now. We just want to escape to something that's very joyous right now, simple as that.

As a woman, let me say, we need to put an end to this toxic feminism that's taken root everywhere. It's not only utterly ridiculous, but also ruining the effort and teachings of true feminists. Disney should apologize to the whole world for ruining such a wonderful, staple movie like Mulan with all this pandering, misguided pseudo feminist bs. Shame on them. Also, next time they want to be culturally sensitive, they should perhaps consider hiring a more appropriate writing team, familiar with the original tale that inspired the animated movie.
@antobutera
@antobutera 4 жыл бұрын
@Elisa Castro idk, I think of you look at Mulan and her sister there's a pretty clear message that as a woman you'll only be special if you have this inherent thing that you didn't actually work for and were lucky to get from birth. And that men will only respect you if you can best them because of your superpowers. I feel like the animated movie had a much better message that strength and honor has nothing to do with gender, neither extremes are good, and when you learn to embrace things from both sides everything is better. But maybe I'm reading too much into it 🤷‍♀️. To me, feminism is understanding that even in a masculine, patriarchal world, femininity can be a strength and an asset. The live action lost the message that a lot of the time brains are better than brawn, and it's not physical strength that makes someone strong. But that's just me. Sorry for the ridiculously long reply LOL
@AnaGarcia-ld5lf
@AnaGarcia-ld5lf 4 жыл бұрын
The first problem with this movie is that it IS sexist because of this new Mulan. The message of this Mulan is very simple and clear: if you are a woman and you have powers like me, you can be like a man, if you are a woman and you are not the best, you have to know what your place is (as happens with Mulan's sister who marries because she is normal). And do you know what? The 99% of women are normal, and if you fight against the system, you will die as the witch. This is why this movie is sexist because of this mary su. It is a very dangerous film.

They think they can do whatever they want, and get pissed when the realize power does indeed have limits. They gained much of this power using the type of woman they showcase. The song reflection is more meaningful because she tried to conform to her family ideals of a woman and she failed. She was kinda lazy but also creative. She was not a warrior. She selflessly chose to save her father. She almost got kicked out, but she didn't give up. She wasn't magic. She had to work at it. Same when she was found out to be a woman. She could have given up, but she continued to fight, not to prove herself, but to save China. That is why cartoon Mulan is awesome.

Because warriors are not badass peeps kicking enemies around with sheer force - warriors are those who stay true to the virtues of bravery, devotion to family, and self-sacrifice for those they hold dear. Original Mulan had all of that, while 2020's Mulan only had that inscribed on her sword. She had none of those qualities. She was just a superheroine beating everyone up. You must never let your lead be worse than anyone else at anything they do. 3. You must make the lead personable so you must make their weakness their friends so keeping them around means they overcome their weakness. 4. Sit back and watch the cash pour in.(Note: every time this was done in the past it failed miserably but for you it will be different because you know you did so much better than the others did) They went from telling a story to telling politics and trying to pass it off as a story.

I had no interest in seeing this movie, but I've been on a Mulan review binge because I am ASTOUNDED at how badly Disney got this. Mulan is my favorite Disney movie, and Mulan has always been my favorite Disney protagonist. I really liked your analysis, and it made me realize something. When you were talking starting at 12:00 about Mulan's strength not being physical strength, but her mind - which is very obvious in the movie - I realized WHY her strength is her mind. Her strength is her mind because she is at a physical disadvantage to the other men (at first) because she is a woman. (and because of her lifestyle as a woman in imperial China). However, it is this EXACT disadvantage of being a woman that leads her to using her mind and thinking outside the box. Her disadvantages as a woman in this make army force her to be creative and bring in an outside perspective to be considered an equal. Her brains, wits, and mind result from her disadvantages of being a woman, and the new perspective is so valuable and fresh that she is invited to sit on the Emperor's council at the end. THis sends the messages to young girls that "Hey, it's okay if you're not the strongest, fastest, or the best fighter. You can still solve challenges, and your perspective as a woman is valuable, both to overcome those challenges, and to society." In the end, the original movie turns Mulan's femininity, both performative (sneaking in with dresses) and non-performative, into her strength. In the new Mulan, they don't have this message, and they can't have this message, because Mulan is never at a physical disadvantage to the men around her. She is never forced to use her brain. She never has to problem solve. Her strength is physical strength, something that is considered more masculine in her culture and society at that time. What then is the takeaway from this? I think the first movie has a much better and more realistic message, especially for young girls, because it tells them - you don't have to be the strongest or the fastest, or even as strong or fast as the men around you, because you have other skills and qualities that can not only make up for that and put you on equal footing with those around you, but could be even more valuable in certain situations than simple brute strength.

They've given creative control to untalented nags and chumps who want to push agendas without any understanding of the art of fiction writing. Remember when we were children and we'd pretend to be superheroes while playing with other kids in the neighborhood, and there was that one kid who ruined the game by declaring they were Captain Ultragod, and they were stronger than Hulk and faster than the Flash and had more gadgets than Batman and more abilities than Superman, and they were immune to everything and had no weaknesses? Take everything you thought you knew and liked about Mulan legend or otherwise. Now imagine the mouse taking it and chewing off the worst bits of every major scene from all the various versions. Over the centuries. Now imagine him dumping that out of his ass mashing it all together in the toilet as a giant lump. Then he leaves it there to congeal and grow into something horrifying. Next he comes back with a a car battery and some jumper cables. Uses that to bring it to life then carves a mouth into it and forces it to speak. The words that poured forth from that mouth is what the main character was. The squealing remainder is what was then mashed into the rest of the movie. I regret nothing except every second of my life that I wasted on that steaming pile of inane drivel. I honestly feel slightly dumber and kind of want to die now. What have I done to myself?

I'm a female. I'm a feminist. And I agree with you. Disney "feminism" is painful to watch, and utterly unenjoyable. Mulan in the cartoon was amazing bc she was not initially the equal of the males around her. She was weaker. And she'd always be weaker But she had great courage, inner strength, determination, and cleverness-- and she found ways to use strategy to become an integral member of the army. Like how athena the female is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy, while ares the male is the god of war and brute strength. There's your balance. The sexes might be equal but we are not the same.

This post is so great. I really despair sometimes-not only because of extreme feminism, but the extreme counterbalance that some people feel is necessary. It’s so unfair that feminism is now bad, despite all the good it did for society when women’s rights were so much less. You can’t deny the biological fact that women are generally weaker, any more than you can deny that females generally mature faster, and have a higher emotional understanding. Equality is not being as good at everything the other gender is good at, its being allowed prosper and find happiness in what you are good at regardless of gender.

Nobody was fuming about the fact that an animated captain fell in love with an animated soldier and didn’t even pursue her until after she had LEFT the ARMY. Like why do so many writers say “we can’t do this this and this because of the me too movement” like oh my god it is NOT hard not to glorify sexual predation. They didn't even follow their own rules when it comes to Chi/Qi. If the majority of the time, in their universe, men are the ones that cultivate chi then why is Mulan the only one using chi in the army? Shouldn't there have been several men in the army and among new recruits that could use chi? Why is Milan the one they ogle at when, statistically speaking, many of them should have been as good--if not better--than her at using their chi due to never being told to restrain it. Even though it doesn't quite line up with the way chi is used in Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan media they could've still gotten a good story with Mulan struggling, helping, and getting help from her friends in the army while keeping in their universe's idea of chi. She could've used her problem solving, wit, and quick thinking to find ways to use the army's existing cultivation methods faster but just as effective so that she doesn't fall behind her peers. They could've shown her struggling to train her physical body to keep up with her growing cultivation; and her army friends taking extra time out of their days to give her more training because they've seen her pushing her cultivation more than should be needed, they want their friend to succeed and watching her be so determined pushed them to where what were just HER added training became all of their added training. And the witch could've been a really easy fix. The enemy hears word that China conscripted cultivators into the army, and out of fear and a desire to win they go to a powerful demon or spirit and form some kind of contract/deal with them or the leader of the enemy finds a piece of leverage over the spirit/demon and they end up working for the enemy. Boom, no witch. Just a demon or spirit doing what they mist with no real stance on either side. If you're gonna add fantastically elements then just fucking lean into it and at least make it interesting

I don't agree. Rey was a Mary Sue. Mulan isn't. We are told she has chi. We are shown she learned to control chi since she was a kid and we see her training by herself as a kid. However, She also needed to train to be a soldier despite her control of the chi. She was KILLED by the other character with powers. Bruce Lee trained by himself much of the time and came up with his OWN martial arts style. He was a human and didn't have any powers. So if a human in real life can do it , is it surprising to see a fictional character with powers training by herself to become better ? Also this is a different adaptation of Mulan. You may like it or you may not. You didn't. But that is not an argument for her being a Mary Sue. Ps. I totally agree with your analysis of the new Star Wars trilogy.

The entire point was that she would get killed if they found out she was a woman, therefor she ran a huge risk which made her sacrifice for her father larger. Mulan isn't a superhero, that was the point. She proved that hard work and determination could get you anywhere. It was like what her father says about the lotus flower, it's a late bloomer but turns out more beautiful. It's a lesson of patience and not giving up when things are hard. That's why Mulan is cool! There's something I realized recently that really made me appreciate the scene where Mulan figures out how to climb the pole to the arrow (can't believe I never realized it before and this video only grounded that realization). It's established from the moment we meet Mulan that she is innovative and can see things from a different perspective, and that's her character throughout the entire movie. We first see her writing notes on her arm for what she has to say to the matchmaker. Then we see her tie chicken feed to her dog and ties a bone in front of him so he'll feed the chickens faster. It continues on and on: climbing the pole, aiming the cannon at the mountain, and luring Shan Yu to the top of the palace to blow him away. As he says, "let's think AROUND the problem". THAT is Mulan's character. She is imperfect and not up to the standard in her society, but she is willing to put her life on the line for her family and she uses her own wit to do it. She learns how to be true to herself and what she's capable of despite no one believing in her, and that's true strength. Mulan learns and grows. THAT is the story we love to see. THAT is the type of female character I personally love to love. Well done video essay. You pointed out everything about the original Mulan that is wonderful and makes Mulan herself an amazing female character done right.

Exactly! Old Mulan went to war knowing full well she's physically weak and untrained, it was an act of personal sacrifice so that her father would live, she left to die in his stead. New Mulan risks nothing, she already is the best of the best, she's basically escaping her old life to somewhere she's more comfortable. First Mulan was heroic because she faced meaningful challenges and overcame hardship and danger to rise up on top. New Mulan is not heroic, because she faced no hardship or meaningful adversity, she just has magic powers.

Another way to put it is like this: Everything Mulan did in the original movie and sequel was done out of love for her family and the want to uphold the honor of her family. So when she is humiliated for the last time (when Shang tells her to hit the road), she relies on her strong will to prove to herself and her superiors that she is not a lost cause, she is not a weak link that will get endanger everyone else's lives, and most importantly of all, she will not allow her father's honor to be besmirched. Meanwhile, everything Mulan does in the remake is incredibly self-centered, because she is the hero chosen by the fate to save China from the evil sorceress. Also, great job Disney, at completely missing the point of having Shen Yu as the main antagonist of the film. The Huns were a terrifyingly powerful force that had taken Asia by storm, and a man like Shen Yu embodies this entirely. Actually, I don't care call him a 'man,' as he looks and acts more akin to a beast that has learned our human mannerisms, while also retaining its power and presence. And so, Mulan, while a strong woman, has to pit herself against beasts like Shen Yu and his army in order to not only uphold her father's honor, but to save China. Meanwhile, Shen Yu gets killed off by an arrow to the head in the remake, and we're stuck with his bird, who is a woman now.

I always thought that during the mountain scene that Shang sparing her was also even MORE dishonorable then killing her. He seemed pissed at her and not only can he NOT bring himself to kill her, I think part of him is like "you need to live with your dishonour". And 100% right about the Huns. Shan-Yu in the animated Mulan is literally a beast. It took me a few watches as an adult to realize it. Not only is Shan-Yu huge and muscular, but a lot of the other huns are as well. Shan-Yu literally smashes through doors with his fist and knocks down columns in the palace with a two handed swing of his sword. Also in the fight at the palace, its a brief thing but after Shan-Yu knocks out Shang. Mulan goes to pick up his sword to cut the rope and it looks like she struggles with it for a breif moment. So that just goes to show you how damn strong he really is. Disney should have either stuck with the Bird Witch, OR the Huns. Not both. Everyone who praises the movie claims the live action was "more realistic" when in reality its more fantastical then the original cartoon Disney version.

I didn’t even really think about it until watching this, but you’re completely right about Mulan not being against the arranged marriage in the original. Given what happens in the rest of the film, I feel like I almost subconsciously retroactively added in that ‘oh she never wanted that’, but that was never the case. She was clumsy and worried about whether she could do it properly, but she was willing to do it.
@Mysikrysa

Well, arranged marriage was a normal thing back then, so it makes sense she wanted what the other girls wanted because she didn´t know there could be another option. Children aren´t dumb and can understand some traditions from the past don´t exist anymore. Mulan wanted to get married and she got more than potentionally unhappy arranged marriage - she found real love. Her journey to it was longer and more complicated but she earned it because of her qualities, not only because of her pretty face.

It's not exactly as if arranging a marriage is inherently evil either. It makes sense from a survival perspective that the more wise parents find a marriage prospect who isn't completely useless, because young people are stupid and make unnecessary mistakes that often ruin their lives. If you are a man you want a kind woman you can trust, and if you are woman, at least for most of world history, you want a dependable man who will provide for your family. It's not complicated.

To paraphrase a quote from a famous Disney character: "Dishonor! Make a note of this: Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cash cow, dishonor on your whole company!" Lol. So I rated 2020's Mulan a 3.75/10. My family and I watched it on Sunday. It was decent and some parts were genuinely enjoyable. However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I'm afraid (especially since my 6-year-old was so excited to watch it, but wound up walking away in the first 10 minutes). To start, this new "Mulan" is an entirely different story from the 1998 Disney animated classic or even the 6th Century Ballad of Mulan. Mulan was a heroic story of a young girl in Ancient China who, in order to bring honor and pride to her family, risked death and torture to keep her father safe. Taking her father's place in the war to save his life. She overcame obstacles that men, bigger and stronger then she could not. It never overshadowed or undermined men. It was a story of leadership, and putting the needs of others before your own. A story of doing the right thing, no matter the personal cost. In the end she tries to offer to her father the treasures she got from the emperor as gift to bring honor to their family only to find out that she herself was more precious to him than anything else. All while having a positive message about both sexes doing what was needed to be done. It's a story beloved by people of all ages and backgrounds. 2020's Mulan is more of a reimagined historical documentary than an actual Disney live-action adaptation. It's lost the magic that made it Disney. No heartfelt positive message. No comedy. No light-hearted interactions. No songs. No animal sidekicks. No Bisexual Le Shang. It's just a story about a historical Chinese figure, turned Mary Sue, being exceedingly monotone, uptight, and strict throughout a war who will fulfill her duty and "bring honor to us all" (China) by being a one-woman wrecking ball. It's obvious the movie tries exceedingly hard to be "realistic" in multiple aspects of the film. However, this Mulan was born with incredible Chi and godly natural talent and abilities, was a complete badbutt from the start, the fact that there is magic and sorcery in the film, and unnatural acrobatics that would absolutely require assisted rigging say otherwise. Especially since the Green Screen and CGI in this film are painfully obvious. Other than that, the movie tends to be slow-moving with dry and stale interactions from the cast. There are many awkward interactions that feel out of place. Lastly, I have to mention all of the negative publicity and acts behind this film and during the production of it. Especially the human rights crimes that were taking place in Xinjiang were video footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners who were blindfolded, shackled, and shoved into busses headed for internment camps. The actress portraying Mulan, Yifei Liu, has been very public about siding against freedom and the people of Hong Kong by supporting the Hong Kong Police cracking down on protests. In the final credits of the film, Disney offers "special thanks" to eight government entities in Xinjiang where several "re-education" camps have been documented. The film also expresses thanks to the "Publicity Department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee," the Chinese Communist Party's Propaganda Department in Xinjiang. Finally, just as a last show of toxicity surrounding this film, the film crew have allegedly filed a complaint regarding the films diversity issues and for being forced to take DNA tests to prove their "Asianness" because there have been complaints that the film is too "White" despite having an all-Asian cast. *Sighs*…Sorry, but Disney absolutely missed the mark. I don't think I'll be seeing this one again and I will be informing the rest of my family and friends about it. 2020's Mulan looks like it's been turned into a glorified propaganda piece for China. #Disney #WaltDisneyStudios #Mulan #BoycottMulan #Dishonor

They need to do her real life story not wonder women. First mulan was raised by her father who spent 20 years in the army and got sent home after his leg was broken and ge took an arrow threw his lungs and lived. Then mulan grew up hunting for her family as was gifted with the bow and arrow. For her village where hunter gatherers or nomadic. He father trained her in martial arts ever since the day she was born. For sadly he saw many women rape or even just killed while being pregnant by the Huns. No the hole part of her taking her father gear is true. Because mulan was rich by her hunting skill and her family was better off then 80 of the rest of China 🇨🇳. For he father had medicine to treat his injuries but never fully recovered. Mulan took her father armor and his sword and left when another war broke out about 1673 years ago and all men where order into service. She bought a horse and a saddle from her home town. How many of you today can do this with your 💰. Now imagine that 1600 plus year ago.. She then got a tent and cooking gear and set off to boot camp a Journey. Took 90 days all by herself in a war turn Countryside and a ride without a scratch. On day one she stood out because of her martial arts skills. In a time WHERE many could not even afford a sword let alone a 🐎. She road in like a Samurai. Then quickly rose threw the rank for she on day 1 could easy kill with a sword and already mastered the bow and arrow and a spear for she hunted wild bore as a child. Then not much is known about her military career other then she made General in a long blooded war that last 13 years. She came back home after securing her release from the army and walk back into her home along with 20 of her male friend's who all where deadly bad asses. She went up stairs put on a dress as her family race home to see HER. She came back down and all her TROOPS shit them selfs when they learned all this time she WAS A WOMEN. That it her story WAS written down about 30 years after she LEFT the army. So yes she was real in a time of fog of war. No much is known after she left the core. Its amazing she kept her gender secret all that time four women were not allowed in the army so I'm guessing she must have look like Cris Cyborg and fought like her as well.

In our time, the "strong female character" is just a fad. I feel like modern movie writers are so afraid of being perceived as sexist by the general public that they put their female characters on this pedastal, turn her into a Mary Sue to make sure there is *no way* she could be considered inferior to anyone else in any way and - bam - she just got stripped of everything that could make her unique or interesting. Ironically, this process is the actual sexist thing to do. Think about it: These people believe that the only way to "empower" a female character is to give her traits typically associated with the male gender - physical power. As if a woman couldn't be strong in her own female way. No, she just has to be good at totally dominating her foes in a battle. Because apparently that's what counts to Hollywood writers as positive personality traits. Not strength of will, determination, the power to overcome your own fears, the ability to make friends easily, the ability to strategize or to think two steps ahead. Nothing inspiring like that. Nothing that a normal, real person could identify with. No, she just needs to be better than those dastardly men around her. What a cope. She doesn't gain her skills through work or by nature of her interests. It doesn't matter who she is. She is good at what she does because of her gender, not because of her character. And that is just insulting.

Have you seen the interview with Daisy Ridley about the changing of Reys backstory? You see a normal human, with a clear relationship to the person she talks to. None of that is in her role as Rey, she is complete fine with herself and she interacts really rare with other people, she is forced to, accept the relationship with Finn. That made her a sociopath, ( that doesen‘t made her a psychopath, that is something differen’t) but I am pretty sure, when Rey came back to the desert, she couldn’t care less about all the other resistance „friends“. I really liked the original idea of Mulan. A girl wanting to fight, cuts her hair, and disguises herself as a boy so she can join the fight. There is a lot of great action and tension in that alone. Why did we love the female characters in GOT (when it was book-based, i.e good)? Because they were at a decided disadvantage in their world due to gender. If new characters are OP, where is the tension? Where is the risk, the sacrifice? For the most part, women don't have physical strength or fighting skills to over-power the average man (yes, my best mate's ex-army ranger wife could probably kill anyone) so what do women use to fight? Their mind. Their wits. What is wrong with acknowledging women's natural strengths and celebrating these? This films seems like heavy-handed pandering. Disney's been having problems marketing to certain parts of the world. I'm wondering how this will turn out financially and if there will be blow back for an obvious cash-grab ploy. How well do Mary Sue's market around the world? SW Mary Sue didn't. I guess we'll find out. I hope you didn't pay Disney twice, Vito!

Wait, the original idea of Mulan was not that she wanted to fight. She wanted to save her father from being drafted imto the army, where he would be killed. So she went in his stead, knowing very well that she can't fight. But she prevailed through wits and determination. She doesn't WANT to fight. She does it to save her father.

I'm a feminist, and this movie sounds downright horrible. Female empowerment doesn't mean "Woman who's a flawless badass because she just is for some reason". Cartoon Mulan was empowering because she was ordinary and flawed, but was able to train and become strong, and she was also able to think outside of the box. That's what made her such an interesting character, because she was showing that anybody can become strong and overcome obstacles with enough dedication. Also, the reason they got rid of Shang doesn't even make sense. Shang never made any advances on Mulan when she was still in the military, he waited until she was out of the military to make his move. Sure, it would have been inappropriate if he were shooting his shot at her while he was still her superior because of the power imbalance...but there was nothing inappropriate at all about him making his advances on her once he no longer had authority over her. Whoever made the decision to get rid of Shang doesn't understand what workplace/military sexual harassment or the ethics in dating in the workplace are.

I keep hearing people defending it by saying "but it's an adaptation of the Ballad!" But that isn't an excuse for bad character writing. I mean, there's already been many more accurate adaptations of the Ballad, many FROM CHINA. This is a DISNEY version, if you want a realistic adaptation of an Ancient and/or Middle Age mythology then Disney is not the place to expect that. Back in the 90s Disney butchered the Heracles/Hercules mythology, but I've never given a fuck because it's a Disney adaptation that I find to be very fun and compelling. Greek and Roman mythology (and history) is very important to me personally, it's a field of study I am experienced and in love with. Yet, I love Disney's take on the tale of Hercules; it's a very unique fusion of Hercules and Clark Kent combined with some really creative decisions like Gospel music. It's not loyal to the period or mythology at all, but I wouldn't expect Disney of all companies to produce a more direct adaptation of such violent, sexual, and adult content. It was the same with the animated Mulan; a very original take on the ballad that oozed with Disney flair and creativity. Not to mention that they actually wrote Mulan better than the ballad and improved upon her hero's journey arc. Who doesn't love I'll Make a Man out of You? Hercules did a similar thing, as his story is much more tragic and brutal in Greek Mythology, so they gave him an original character arc based around becoming a true hero. Like new Mulan, Hercules is born with spectacular powers. Yet, he still had to train for YEARS to become a capable hero and not just a clumsy kid with super strength. That says a lot about where he started and who he became by the end; his training, trials, and tribulations made him grow and become a better man. In fact, it was something that his powers had no control over that made him a true hero. He defeated Hades and became a god not through physical strength or individual glory, but by sacrificing himself to save someone else. He was willing to throw his soul away forever to save Meg, and that is what completed his journey, not just being a strong independent badass. Whereas the new Mulan was always perfect and just needed to show it.

Mulan is my favorite Disney princess because I related to her more, she wasn’t girly, she was more of a Tom boy and her journey for taking her father place to save his life was amazing! The training montage is the best, and Mulan our in the work, but also it showed that her friends as well had flaws too! But also the fact that she was strong and smart and still had a love interest in Shang and they felt equal NATURALLY was great too! They needed each other a worked TOGETHER! They both had flaws and they had their own individual arcs that brought them together in the end. She earned the respect of her peers because she worked just as hard as them, Mulan taught me about hard work and that you don’t have to wear dresses and have a Prince Charming, you can be smart, athletic, strong, and be one of the boys as well, and still fall in love. Basically be so good they can’t deny you, but put in the work to get there. If that makes sense.

But what I like the 1998 Mulan is she doesn't have to be hyper masculine to bring honor to her family (like whenever there is a war/problem, she uses her wit and creativity to solve the problem and doesn't resort to physical strength to solve her problems). Yes, Mulan isn't your typical 'girly' female protagonist but she isn't scared to embraced her feminity either to be called 'strong'. And I think that's empowerment. Like a woman doesn't have to be completely act like a 'man' to be called 'strong'. Because telling young girls to act as a man and not really embracing the traits they originally have and just be yourself to be called strong/worthy isn't a good lesson to give.

Can I say something that might be kinda mind blowing to some ppl? I was a little girl in the 90s and I LOVED playing with Barbie dolls. I owned an Esmeralda doll, a Phoebus doll, a Quasimodo doll (yes there actually was a Quasimodo Barbie doll) and I owned Shang and Mulan. I saved up for Shang and had the owner of the local toy store hold on to his last Shang doll until I could pay for him. Shang and Mulan became my main Barbie dolls that I played with. I especially loved shang because he had long hair and ive always loved men with long hair. Before Mulan and Shang were my main dolls it was Esmeralda. I loved these dolls so much and I acted out long convoluted stories with my sister who had her own esmeralda doll. I also remember owning a Pocahontas doll at some point. I'm white as snow and yet I loved playing with these dolls because of what they represented. Mulan was a lot like I felt as a kid. I played like a boy and dressed like a boy. Esmeralda was the woman I wanted to grow up to be. Someone who is kind to others and don't judge them for what they look like on the outside and who is true to her values even when facing adversity. Someone who is not too petty to help people out who technically are at a better advantage than herself and someone who is willing to have her prejudices challenged. Mulan made me feel that who I was, was valid and that it was okay to struggle as long as you keep fighting. That is why I loved those dolls. I do not think I at any fucking point in my entire childhood thought about the fact that I wasn't playing with white, blond dolls that looked like me. I didn't care because it wasn't what they looked like that mattered to me. It was who they were on the inside. It seriously baffles me that some people today think that diversity didn't exist when we were kids. I feel like a fucking alien in this world sometimes. I honestly think Phoebus was the only white, blonde and blue eyed Barbie doll I ever owned. Lol

They bastardised the original story and that's why I'm so angry. Why does she have magic? Where's Mushu? Where's the teamwork? So dumb.. I mean for fuck sakes, Disney you're getting worse.
