I had voles two years ago, but not since. My invaders are deer. Had to fence in some things. My garden has improved since I went to deep mulch.

Deer rabbits and gophers, yep you with this problem must live near a wooded area. Years ago, up in the mountains here in California my grandpa had that problem. There were pears, apples, plums and walnuts. That produced enough to share with the critters. But what frosted gramps was the berries and rest of the veg garden being chewed to the ground just about the time things were ready to eat. Smart critters. Well gramps always said do it right or don't do it at all. Following your example, he dug down putting a deep then horizontal chicken wire barrier. Of course aten foot cage went up and over the entire twenty by fourty garden. Along with heavy rocks all around the perimeter. We enjoyed berries and trout gramps caught in the stream for many a breakfast. Gramps just smiled as we watched critters try to invade the veg patch. No more worries.

I was told moles don't eat garden crops well now I know

Well actually the moles eat worms and grubs but make tunnels that the voles like to use to get easy access to the garden and the voles (smaller and look like a mouse) are the ones that eat the tender plants and roots. Nasty little critters.

I lose early from seed, green transplants, to birds here in Michigan i think it was pigeons eating them or other birds using such for nests as bendable green fibers or perhaps to ward off predators from their young. Most birds cannot eat onions

Chickens eat onions. Then their eggs taste off for a week. Imagine a chocolate cake slash onion. Check if you have ferral chickens around. Chickens will eat anything.

@@BrendaRockwell-u9w i live in a city so no feral chickens and no kept chickens within 1/4 mile. City allows 3 such birds per household but none nearby.
