Mulch Problems. There are also many types of mulch you buy. According to advertisements, pine or hardwood mulch last longer, shredded hardwood bark mulch has a lot of nutrients; pine needle mulch looks good, but does not last long. Sawdust mulch lasts long, but uses up the needed nitrogen. Wood chip mulch can be free from a tree cutting service but take forever to decompose, and has zero nutrition. Organic mulch cost more. Colored mulch looks good, Hay mulch contains weed seeds. Compost mulch may have some sewer sludge, permits a nutrient imbalance and contains high soluble salts. Newspaper mulch is flammable and contains carcinogens. Leaf mulch blows away. Bark mulch attracts wasps, ants, and termites. Rubber mulch does not deteriorate. Finally, cypress mulch lasts longer, holds more water, and is a natural insecticide. Now that you have been completely misinformed by commercialism, let’s get down to what I call “The Mulch Scams”. The Cypress Mulch Scam”. Cypress mulch contains natural chemicals that fend off insects and resist rot. The Cypress mulch did that many years ago when they used full-grown, fully developed, 100 year old Cypress trees. Due to unsustainable, over-harvesting of cypress trees, most cypress mulch now comes from immature baby trees that have not yet developed the properties that made Cypress mulch so popular decades ago. You are not buying what you are told you are buying. “The Landscaper’s Generic Mulch Scam”. If you live in the city, many garden entities or landscapers have city contracts to pick up free refuse on garbage day. This is garbage contains pesticides, weed killers, chemicals, dog or cat feces, animal urine, newspapers with ink, cardboard with glue, phosphates, and other nasty stuff that gets recycled back into mulch. You are buying a witches brew which can poison your front yard. Furthermore, you may have just been artillery fungi which eject black globular sticky tar projectiles which stick to your home which do not wash off. “The Secret Formula Mulch Scams. You can get these after large storms because a lot of cleanup debris gets chopped up and recycled “The Colored Mulch Scam”. In the past, red mulch color was made with chromate copper arsenate, a carcinogen also known as or CCA. Today we are told that red dies are made of soybean oil or iron oxides. Virtually, most commercial dyes are toxic, made from petrochemicals with heavy metals. No wonder when you read the mulch labels they state mulch colorant used. What is a mulch colorant?
The black mulch does not occur in nature, except under anaerobic (means without oxygen) conditions where the soil is sickly and full of bad microbes. Furthermore, most common black colorant is carbon black, which is a byproduct of the chemical industry and a known carcinogen. Grab a handful of black mulch and rub it together in your hands. If your hands are stained, you might not want to use this stuff. Additionally colored mulched needs reclaimed or recycled wood to be able to absorb the colorant. You can bet that agriculture wood pallets that have spilled insecticides, factory pallets that had leaking chemicals, and wood crates from china all get chipped up and then dyed. If the mulch manufacturer is located in the country, than a few red barns get chopped up which certainly contain Pre-1978 lead paint. “The Rubber Mulch Scam” which has recycled tire shreds that contain heavy metals like zinc, selenium, chromium, cadmium, and molybdenum, which are toxic to the environment as they decompose. These chemicals pose a threat to people, animals, and aquatic ecosystems as they leach into groundwater. In addition, they float away during rain and on hot days, they stink up your property. “The Sour Toxic Mulch Odor Scam”. This mulch has a pungent odor similar to ammonia, vinegar, and rotten eggs. Mulch should not be stored for long periods of time in huge piles that experience anaerobic conditions, where microorganisms thrive in an oxygen-free environment, usually in the center of large piles. This mulch can become laden with toxic by-products such as methanol, acetic acid, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide gas. “The Dog Killing Cocoa Bean Shell Mulch Scam”. Cocoa Bean Shells smell nice, but they contain theobromine, the same chemical that makes chocolate toxic to dogs. It has been known to cause dog diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, elevated heart rate, and even first degree dog murder. Therefore, the only thing we have left is the natural mulch with all natural products. Good luck finding this. Maybe we need to substitute the mulch with stone that comes in many colors just like mulch. The only thing different is that we know the stone is natural and safe unless you live in a glass house.

I have 2 friends who own mulch companies. Paper mills and sawmills debark the logs before processing the wood. These mulch companies buy the bark from the mills. One of these mulch companies sells a 100% bark mulch with no shredded wood or other fillers. His business has been dyeing mulch for years. My other friend in the mulch business adds about 30% shredded wood chips as a filler. He gets the chips from local arborists. He started dyeing mulch a few years ago because of market demands. I don't know where the red mulch craze started but I think it's the most fake looking stuff in a garden.

Agreed. Red mulch looks absolutely disgusting and unnatural. Good design tells you that darker mulch helps your plants and shrubs stand out better. The red mulch just distracts the eye from all of your plants. Deep green grass also looks better against dark colors; and since most houses are painted with bright colors, your house paint stands out better amid dark mulch.

I use both pine needles and wood chips. Usually the needles along with coffee grounds under the wood chips. The wood chips have green leaves and small twigs that break down quickly. I know where they come from. I applied several inches of chips last summer and they have already broken down by more than half, so no, it doesn't take years to break down. ALL of my plants are doing great. I can dig down a few inches with a small hand trowel and turn up a dozen worms in any given location. No termites lol. Point being, just know where your mulch comes from.

Great video. I agree with you 99%, almost 100% were it not for the statement that all black dies are artificial and made of bad chemicals. I and my grandfather before me, make our own wood stain from the husks of the black walnut tree on our property. We boil them in large batches until they are a black concentrate and then let sit for days. The resulting liquid makes a beautiful lack stain when used on wood or gray when used on clothing.

He has some great points, we really need to tidy up our act. Stones might not be the best mulch as they can mix into the soil but i use clay pebbles to help keep the soil moist. If used carefully so as not to mix too much into the soil this could work well. Also some people are only buying mulch as a decorative product and stones might also work well for this purpose but a little tricky to manage in the long run.

Home Depot does not cut any treated wood for health reasons. But hey the crops are watered with fracking waste with depleted uranium in it and fertilized with coal ash waste. What do you think the "soil amendments" are that's in all the soil and much of the store bought manures??? I'm paranoid and should take some antidepressants.

STONE? Yahahaha! Previous owners did that, and it washes down into the soil after a few years. When I moved in, all my flower beds had rocks in the soil down to about 2 feet. I couldn't even stick a shovel into the soil for the stones IN the soil. Those stones are not going to stay on TOP of the soil. They wash into it as it rains. I have the equivalent of course cement and can't dig holes in it! I have spent 9 years gradually digging that stone "mulch" out of the flower beds so I can grow plants. "Stone mulch" may work in flower pots but not the yard.

He’s absolutely right! I get sick when I’m near the crappy mulch! When I moved from my condo, my dog died 3 weeks later, and he had constantly been eating the mulch. In my new house, I had artillery fungus, and every other type of disgusting molds on the 8” deep mulch, which is way too deep. I kept getting sick when I gardened and had to pay to have all the mulch removed. I’m still rebuilding. Good ending, by the way!

Do not buy colored wood mulch. I helped someone put down some black stuff from HD. I could tell it came from pallets. Also, if it just says coloring, you can bet it is the cheapest way to color it. Wood chips are good if you know where they came from. I have used bark away from the house and never had any signs of termites. Next to the house I use a LARGE size lava rock with a water holding frame around the shrubs.

I get free mulch from the people who cut around the power lines every few years. I use a lot of it in the chicken pen then put it in the garden in the fall months. It doesn't rob the soil of nitrogen, it breaks down beautifully and has helped turn my clay soil into a rich garden bed. Wood chips help absorb and retain water for long periods of time and although rocks can keep soil from losing moisture for a while, it does nothing to help retain it and release slowly to the plants. Rocks don't do anything to build soil either and wood chips and tree cuttings do as well. No rocks for me.

Well researched apart from "wood chips don't contain any nutrition"... it does but takes ages to break down, which is why we use it for "presentation". Yep I have been told by people who sell mulch not to use it lol. i.e. don't use anything from a "organic" waste dump. End of the day, make your own soils for the garden. Careful about what you use on shrub gardens. Put coloured on areas u don't want growth.

Many thanks for the video. Buy commercial mulch when mulch material is all around you, and it's free? NEVER! Garden produce would not justify the cost of commercial mulch. Newspapers (black ink only), cardboard, grass clippings, Autumn leaves, coffee grounds, egg shells (maybe) I see nothing wrong with cardboard and newspaper. I use wood chips primarily for looks. They will eventually decompose (with the help of termites). Anyone remember the DuPont ad, "Better living through chemistry"? Are we humans the only life-form on Earth that leaves toxic wastes wherever we go? Rocks will keep the ground damp. Ever notice how well weeds grow in a gravel driveway and parking lots?

Cole Watson I do too. I find that I have ethical tree trimming companies in my area that do not add anything to their tree trimming waste, or shred up anything else such as treated telephone poles, etc. This demented person says that wood chips contain no nutrients and I beg to differ. The mulch contains all of the small twigs and leaves in addition to the mulched trunks and I can show you wonderful gardens, with years of using wood chips as mulch in a no dig situation who had terrible hard pan soil before and now have wonderful nutrient filled soil underneath the mulch.

Exactly. I use wood chips from tree trimming operations. They are usually happy to dump a load of mulch in your yard if they are working in the area. I had shotgun mulch all over the deep mulch left from the previous owner. I am highly affected by mold, and got very sick every time I gardened. I had to have it all removed, and brought in dirt and am looking for something else to use. I previously lived in a water damaged condo that backed up to a marsh. Because consumers want everything for nothing and business owners have to make a profit so the cheapest way is the only way. Competition is great, but only to a degree. Too much competition creates problems and causes manufacturers to cut corners in order to keep prices low yet at the same time make a profitable margin to stay in business. The real culprit is mass over-consumption and over-saturation of competition. I have no solutions.

A few years back the home owners association had our community go from pine needles to wood chips. Well that was a disaster for my house because I have vinyl siding in light gray and the mulch had spores that have blown on my siding and windows and look absolutely disgusting and I can’t get rid off. I’ve tried brushing with listerine etc. even got on our cars. If you can scrape some off it leaves spots so I gave up. If I replace my windows(which I can’t afford) how do I know it won’t happen again. I’m in fear it will happen again because they put new mulch every year. There is nothing wrong with fresh tree chips/mulch as long as you know exactly where it's coming from. I get mine from local tree trimmers who are working on a local job, and I know what wood is in the mix. Commercial mulch is expensive and mulch can be free if you call your local tree trimmers for a load that ordinarily would be headed to the landfill. They will be glad to bring it to you. Mulch should smell fresh, and should have green leaves mixed in. Look at the Back to Eden clips on KZbin. Stone mulch is fine, too, but very expensive as well. It also doesn't fertilize or break down to improve soil like wood chips. It's good for decorating, though.

+Lynn Proctor Unfortunately the only way to be able to trust the guy selling it would be to watch him like a hawk from start to finish. Some people these days would sell you cheap stuff when you paid for good stuff and pocket the difference.

I stopped at 1:03 because back to back comments are incorrect. Woodchips "pulling" nitrogen, and that there's no nutrition in living trees, that makes no sense, they become nutritious when they die? Actually, in the right combinations/conditions they compost quite quickly. It's not about the materials, it's about what eats them.

Rubber mulch is fugly and stinky!!! You aren't allowed to have tires sitting around because tires are made from petroleum, yet they allow you to buy rubber mulch made from tires and spread it all over your property? WTF? It's ground up tires! Ugliest mulch I've ever seen. My neighbor uses it and I wish he would stop! Looks good from afar, but when you get close to it, it's uglier than anything I've ever seen and stinks to high heaven.

They force us to pay $3-5 per tire to "recycle" them, then they sell it back to us in the form of "mulch". It's hard to stay sane in a country like this.

I wonder if this guy owns a "Stone and Gravel" business and is trying to make some money. I use wood chip mulch, leaves, pine needles, pinecones, sticks, and any green waste all mixed up and it all works just fine, Wood chip and bark will not attract termites, it would have to be a very sizeable piece of wood like and 8x8 for them to care.

So what's wrong with pine straw or pine bark?
@VladTheImpalerTepesIII
@VladTheImpalerTepesIII 7 жыл бұрын
If by pine straw you mean dead pine needles... I have a huge pine tree on an empty lot I own. Been using the dead, fallen needles as mulch in my raised beds for 2 years now on all types of veg plants. So far, so good. EZ to rake up & light for transporting. The acidity scare is a myth. Once they are dead, they are no longer acidic and don't affect the soil pH.
